I'm getting dslr camera for christmas. Which one is better? I am a beginner but I want decent photos. Which one is better quality and easy to use? Also you can recommend me dslr camera's with a price range on 500-550. Thanks

Answer
In my opinion neither. You can get a whole lot more camera for the same money with the Pentax K-x. The Pentax K-x was chosen by the 'Technical Image Press Association' as the 2010 "Best DSLR Entry Level". Read a review here: http://www.shutterbug.net/equipmentreviews/amateur_digital_slrs/0510pentax/index.html

Here is what you get with the Pentax K-x:

1) A CMOS sensor which gives superior performance at higher ISO settings. Very important indoors when you don't want to use the flash.

2) Live View.

3) HD Video.

4) Double/multiple exposure capability of from 2 to 9 images on a single frame with Auto EV Compensation. This feature opens up a whole new world of creativity.

5) A focusing motor in the camera body. Any Pentax AF lens made since 1988 can be used on the K-x and will auto focus as it should.

6) Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so any lens used becomes an IS lens. You could buy a legacy Pentax 50mm lens or 200mm telephoto lens and both become IS lenses.

7) A choice of colors so you don't have to settle for a black camera unless you want to.

The Nikon D3000 has exactly NONE of the features of the Pentax K-x. NONE! With the D3000 (and D3100 and D5000) if you want auto focus you must use Nikon AF-I or AF-S lenses. If you want IS (Nikon calls it VR) you have to pay for it with every VR lens Nikon offers and it isn't available on all their lenses.

The Canon XS is a two year old model and is thus somewhat behind in technology. It does have a CMOS sensor and Live View but NONE of the other features of the Pentax K-x. With the XS you can only use EF or EF-S lenses. Canon also has their IS in some but not all of their lenses. Like Nikon, you pay for it over and over.

Here are the current prices for the three sw/18-55mm zoom lens at B&H:

Pentax K-x, $489.95

Nikon D3000, $499.95 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Ends 11-20-2010.

Canon XS, $499.99 after a $50.00 Instant Savings from B&H. Ends 11-24-2010.

So you can pay MORE ($10.00 is $10.00) for the Nikon or Canon and get FEWER features or you can save $10.00 and get all the features of the Pentax K-x. In my world that's an easy decision - the Pentax K-x wins.

Few people know that Pentax introduced the first Japanese-made 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) in 1952 so they have a long history with SLR type cameras.

All Pentax DSLR cameras use the legacy "K" lens mount first introduced in 1975. That means you have access to all those old-school manual focus lenses which are plentiful and inexpensive on eBay. Yes, there are limitations when using a 35 year old lens but at least it will be an IS lens on your K-x.

So don't cheat yourself by ignoring the Pentax K-x.

Is the Sony α55 DSLR Camera a professional grade camera?

I have a canon g11, would the Sony α55 DSLR Camera be an upgrade?

Answer
No camera is "professional" - its the photographer who is the professional and uses the tool (the camera) to do the job.

The Sony SLT A55 would be a tremendous upgrade from the Canon G11 although the G11 is a good camera. With the A55 you'll gain interchangeable lenses and a much, much larger sensor. Plus the A55 allows full-time continuous auto focus whether you're shooting still pictures or video.

Buy the Sony SLT A55 but keep the G11 for those times when you prefer to travel light.

Here are a couple of reviews of the A55:
