Answer
Your memory card may be high capacity or of a type that your computer memory card slot does not recognize. Reboot could solve the problem, but there could be lots of other things wrong e.g., the SD could be corrupted or the contacts dirty.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged, format in camera, and don't delete or fill card completely. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

When pictures have been deleted or memory cards have been formatted, a memory card reader will be needed to recover the pictures. Click this link for a free restoration program.

If you are still having trouble, the following information describes a better way to move/copy photos to and from a computer or memory card.

Just received some pictures in an e-mail which I moved to the computer. Then copied these pictures to a memory card and could view them on my camera or show on TV. If megapixels of imported pictures is too high or low you may not be able to view on the camera, but pictures will show and print on computers.

If your computer has memory card slots, find the correct slot and copy pictures from the memory card to the computer.

If there are no memory card slots on your computer that work with your memory card, purchase a Targus card reader at Walmart for $8.88 or another brand for less at Ritz/Wolf/Kit camera. Also, they do 3½ x 5" digital prints for 6¢ each on Tuesday and Wednesday.

After you have the memory card plugged in, go to My Computer and open the memory card, select the picture you want to copy, and then copy to the My Pictures folder under My Documents under Documents and Settings.

If you have trouble with this, it may be easier to right click on Start and then left click Explore. Find and select the picture you want to copy and then at top left, click the X next to Folders to see a place to select Copy Files. Now select the My Picture folder. Make and select a sub folder then click Copy.

You can also copy from the computer to a memory card.

Have just been playing with this and found that it works really well, but you should first format the memory card in the camera because it adds files to the card you will need.

Next, take a picture of something with the camera.

Place the memory card in the card reader and go to My Computer.

Open the memory card and you should see a folder on the left (DCIM) that has your picture. Do not open the MISC folder on the right.

Double Click on the DCIM folder and you should see another folder e.g.,100HPM417, which includes the name of your camera. Double Click on that folder and you should see the picture you just took.

When you copy from the computer to a memory card, that is the folder where your pictures must be copied. You may only be able to copy one picture at a time.

One last thing, the file names of your pictures must not have any additional letters or those pictures will not be seen by the camera. Also, the file name format must match the file name of the picture you took e.g., HPIM1903. Rename files to the same format as your camera photos.

If you have trouble with this, it may be easier to right click on Start and then left click Explore. Find and select the pictures you want to copy and then near the top left, click the X next to Folders to see a place to select Copy files. You can then select the memory card folder e.g.,100HPM417, that you clicked to see the picture you took and click Copy.

what type of laptop to buy?

fosmom

we want to buy our daughter a laptop for her birthday - she's a myspace and ipod kind of kid - what brand? what gig? what processor? what memory? I know nothing! HELP!

Answer
Laptops these days are supercharged, have too much memory, hard drive space, and processor speed, none of which are required to such an extent unless the laptop will be used for heavy duty programming, high-def designing, or high-def gaming. An average laptop lasts for a couple of years and people usually end up getting a new one. I suggest you go with a decent laptop that is reasonably priced so that she can get a new one a couple of years from now since technology is so quickly evolving.

Go with 2-3 GB RAM (Memory), 200+ GB Hard Drive, Dual-Core Processor (1.5 GHz or more - Intel or AMD). If she is into myspace, an integrated card reader would be good to make photo upload easy fro a camera and also songs can be transferred easily to an mp3 player or ipod. An integrated webcam would be good. If she is in school, i'd suggest a small laptop that weighs less than 6 pounds.

Here are a few recommendations along with links to buy them at a reasonable price.

Gateway T-1424u Laptop Computer
Priced at $479.99.
Specs:
- AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor 1.90 GHz
- 3 GB RAM
- 5-in-1 card reader
- 1.3 Megapixel integrated webcam
- weight: 5.5 pounds
- 320 GB Hard Drive
- Sleek and light weight
I think this will be a great gift. It is at Compusa and they charge only $1.99 for shipping. I found the cheapest price at:
http://www.dealjuggler.com/Gateway-T-1424u-Laptop-Computer---Only-$479.99.html
The sale is through compusa.

This is another excellent laptop:
Toshiba 17 inch Satellite P305D-S8995E
Price: $598 (available online only) with free shipping to the nearest walmart store.
http://www.dealjuggler.com/Toshiba-17-inch-Satellite-P305D-S8995E-Laptop-PC---Only-$598.00-with-free-shipping-to-store.html
Specs:
- 4 GB RAM (Memory) - very fast
- 250 GB Hard Drive
- AMD Dual-Core processor 2.0 GHz
- 17" screen (big screen)
- Harman/Kardon stereo speakers
- Integrated web cam
- Integrated card reader
- Weight: 7.5 pounds (heavy - would recommend less than 6 pounds). The weight is higher because of the large 17" screen size.
Overall, this is an excellent laptop at a great price.

Here is another very good laptop, inexpensive, fast
HP 550 Notebook PC
Price: $379.99 (usually retail is $499.99)
Sold by Compusa
http://www.dealjuggler.com/HP-550-Notebook-PC---Only-$379.99.html
Specs:
- 15.4 inch screen
- 4 GB RAM (very fast)
- Intel Celeron 550 2.0GHz (slightly slower than the above dual-core processors), but this should work just fine
- 160 GB Hard Drive
- Integrated card reader
- No webcam
- Weight: 5.5 pounds (light weight)

Hope the above was helpful

What is a 310-pixel camera, as compared to a 1.3 megapixel camera?

Karebear

I am going to buy a camera phone soon, and I don't know which is better.

Answer
You probably meant 310k pixels which is about VGA resolution (640 x 480) - see this Wikipedia article on the standard display resolutions:

what is a megapixel wat r they used for

Mike S

Answer
you could find your answer here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megapixel#Megapixel

or just simply know that all it is, is a little sensor, kind of like a little light bulb you see when getting really close to the TV, but instead of projecting light, it collects light. they are used for any type of digital imaging product, like video cameras, or photo cameras. really when you see that a camera has 6 mega pixels, it means that it has 6 million pixels, so it has 6 million sensors to capture the light. so the more MPs then the bigger the picture could be printed. now on a digital camera, the MPs is just how big the picture can be, the quality is set by selecting basic, normal, of fine. MP measurements is just how many #pixels wide x #pixels height the image is. Some cameras will tell you the size. mega=million pixel is what captures the light. think dpi (dots per inch) the more dots the more you can tell what the picture is!

How much money should I budget for Ghost Hunting Gear?

Becky

I'm discovering some great online ghost hunting stores. Now I'm wondering what people are budgeting for their ghost hunts? How much money is going to get me a good ghost hunt investigation?

Thanks for the help!

Answer
As Iâm sure youâve realized, this depends what you would like to use to âhunt ghosts.â Of course the answer to that depends greatly on what you would like to get out of âghost hunting.â Alright, so enough answering a question with more questions.

The costs begin with free! Thatâs right, I highly recommend those new to the âghost huntingâ field to utilize what they have around the house. Most people have access to a camera, or camera/phone. Obviously the more you spend the more quality your photograph and any potential anomalous data acquired will have. There are some fairly decent entry level digital cameras for sale today (*2012) for around $100 and up. There are a ton of options you will want to familiarize yourself with first. This goes for cameras or some of the more specific tools you see on the ghost hunting TV shows. Having worked with most of the networks and production companies, I can say that what you see on TV isnât always the best direction to go with your own âghost hunting.â

To get straight to your question (too late):
Infrared Thermometer $15
Infrared Thermometer with PC interface and K-Type Probe $250+ (recommend this one)
Digital Camera $15
Digital Camera with glass lens, Infrared illuminators and high Megapixels $150+ (recommend this one)
3D Digital Camera $200+ (recommend this one)
Single Axis EMF Meter $20
Three Axis Data logging pc interface EMF Meter $300+ (recommend this one)
Dowsing rods $20+

Alright so I could go on, but it would be easier to direct you a site that you could click through the store for free (full disclosureâ¦my website). http://GetGhostGear.com Visit there and find a ton of articles with pictures and âas seen on TVâ equipment (as many TV shows have gotten their equipment from me). Become an informed consumer and check out the HUGE and FREE list of ghost hunting equipment here http://getghostgear.com/gear-list-with-images.html

All you have to do is click on the ghost hunting equipment picture, learn more about it, and then click another link there if you want to purchase it. We donât recommend all of the equipment, just for the record so if you want our advice, read the articles first! Iâll include a bio about myself and my background so you know where your information is here is coming from (even if you don't shop from us, know who you are shopping with).

Hope this helps, and start saving those pennies. Get out in the field (safely) first and see what you think you need from there!

Does Verizon offer a camera phone with a resolution higher then 1.3 megapixels?

healthstud

Overseas they offer phones with 7 megapixels! What's the deal, why don't we have these phones?
What bothers me is that it's not that we're behind. That problem doesn't exist, because The United States doesn't manufacture any cell phones. ALL of our phones are from over-seas. They choose what to release for our carriers to sell. It's ridiculous.

Answer
When I last checked, Verizon Wireless carries only one phone w/ a camera w/ higher res than 1.3 Mpxl, and that's the Samsung a990 (3.0 Mpxl). It's pricey, even w/ rebates and New Every Two applied.

I think that most US consumers are still trying to figure out that their cellphone can make phone calls and do txt msgs. Only a few people care about what you talk about. Besides, a lot of people already have digital cameras that support high res, so the market for cameraphones w/ such high res, and the technology to support it, is still a ways off in the US.

It still comes down to the carriers making money off the largest group of people, while enticing the bleeding edge types w/ high-tech stuff. The bleeding edge crowd will have to wait, but probably not for long.

is a 1.3 megapixel camera better than a 2.0 megapixel camera? i'm talking about cell phone cameras?

Tiffany!

???
thanks for your help

Answer
I would expect a 2 megapixel camera to be better than a 1.3 megapixel camera given that everything else was equal.
however both are quite small. megapixels refers to the size / capacity of the image sensor... 1.2 million pixels ro 2 million pixels.. each pixel senses light in one colour..

its not just the size of the sensor that counts. the quality of the lens (this affects the amount of light let into the lens) the quality of the image processing hardware inside the camera/phone.

as a general rule a bigger sensor should be better, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could get a better engineered camera with a smaller sensor that will out perform a cheap as chips 2 mp camera.

ultimately if 'all' you are doing is taking photos of your mates then it doesn't really matter. it will matter if say you are taking holiday photos of objects a long way away, or if you want to print those images onto some paper. they will however work fine on any screen

if you wanted 'photographs' then you would know already that a 5Mp camera is around the smallest sensor to take general purpose images (images that can be manipulated or tinkered with as required). %mp is the basic size that you can get good quality A4 (10" x 8") images printed on

but if you want 'snaps' ie images that refresh your memory of the things you or you mates dis say on holiday then any camera.. the one thats to hand.. is the right camera

Good camera for Youtube vlogger? ?

Q. I haven't started vlogging on YouTube yet, but I want to. I need a high megapixel and clear sound camera for under £300. I want to start vlogging soon!

Answer
When looking for video cameras you don't look for mega pixels. Mega pixels pertain to the photo quality not the video quality.

Obviously a flip out screen is a must and make sure you can flip it 180 degrees so you can see yourself when you're in front of the camera.

Look for a camera with optical image stabilization if possible. Optical image stabilization means that the camera lens moves up and down when the camera is moving, creating a cleaner and better looking stabilization. Digital stabilization goes into the video after it has been taken and attempts to stabilize it.

Find a camera that has both Auto Focus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF). The manual focus will help you get that "vlogger" look because you can focus the lens on you and blur out the background.
A zoom of at least 15x if preferable, however my camera only has 12x and it far surpasses the zooming capabilities I require. Don't worry about digital zoom since you it is always bad and you should never use it.

Look for a camera where you can have a lot of manual settings to play around with such as white balance, brightness, contrast, etc. These will help you get the best coloring and lighting while filming.

Additional, but optional features that are very helpful are an accessory shoe for if you were to ever want to attach an external light or microphone (try to get a standard hot shoe instead of a mini hot shoe; they do make mini to standard shoe adaptors though), external microphone and headphone ports (again for hooking an external microphone to improve sound and the headphone jack to hear the sound in a noisy area).

When looking at the picture quality, search for the camera and model number and "test video" or "test shot" on Youtube to get a real idea of how the camera performs. Read reviews online of other people's experiences with the camera.

For brands I personally love Sony and Canon. These two brands are the best video cameras to me. I'll link to the video camera I have below. It's is very expensive and way out of your price range but it should give you an idea of what is a good camera. I knew absolutely nothing about video cameras before I bought mine and did TONS of research on what all the terms meant and what was the best.
For cheaper cameras check out bhphotovideo.com. They have great prices and look under their used section to see if anything there catches your eye. Also go to your big box stores (like Best Buy) and see if they have anything you like. You really just have to play around with cameras to see what you like and what fits best in your hand.

Remember that (at least in America) you can haggle with the employees to get the price down and ask about floor models! My camera was a floor model that they were selling and since it was the last one (they were trying to sell it so they could put up the newer model) we were already getting a good discount. My dad got it down even more by getting the employee to take $100 off and an extra battery for free. With floor models I definitely recommend the store's warranty (at least at Best Buy) since it covers ALL damages and since it was a floor model, the Sony warranty was invalid so if anything happened and I didn't have the warranty then I would be SOL. The warranties from Best Buy are all paid about extra money for the employees (hence why they push them on you so much) so if you want to, you could even ask for the warranty for free. If the employee really wants to make the sale then they could be willing to take the cut. Just remember when haggling to be confident and don't be afraid to walk away. If you tell the employee that you could go to a different store and buy it, at they don't budge, then leave. They get very anxious when you say this because they are paid on commission and don't want to lose the sale.

the perfect camera?

I'm very into photography and really want to get started with a good camera. Im looking for a camera that takes really good pics of nature, architechure, scenis shots etc. i was looking at the Kodak Easy Share Z812 but i dont like the situation with the battery. I would rather not use double AA batteries. And im not going to spend a fortune, under 350$ would be good. Thanks in advance!

Answer
I have a Sony DSC-W80. I got it at Circuit City, and I love that store because the sales associates really know what they're doing. They steered my towards this camera and I'm very happy with the purchase, it was $230, which is a lot to a 14-year-old on a babysitting salary, but I have yet to regret it.

The video mode is better than a camcorder, no lie. The sound is flawless and you can even adjust sound on the camera. The picture...never blurry or anything. The videos play on my 34" LCD with no fault! I'm totally taking advantage of this feature!

The pictures are almost too amazing for me. The camera is a 7.2 megapixel, but I set my picture quality to 5 megapixel because it takes up less space and the pictures turn out beautiful. The image stabilization works really well. I tested it by waving my camera back and forth in the air and randomly took shots without stopping my camera. The weren't the least bit blurry!

There are a few modes in this camera:

Auto Adjustment (For shooting with preset settings)
High Sensitivity (For Low Lighting)
Soft Snap (Adds soft background, good for taking pics of people.)
Twilight Portrait
Twilight
Landscape
Beach
Snow
Video
Prgram Auto (Allows more programming before taking the shot.)

Also, you can remove red-eye, crop the photo, and do a bunch of other editing right on the camera!

The lens is without flaw. I don't even need flash on my shots because the lens can take in enough light.

You can play slideshows on your camera WITH music!

There's so many things I like about this camera, I can't list them all. I love it so much. If you get this camera, you will not have regrets. It's only $230 max and worth the price. I have the pink one, but it comes in pink, silver, white, and black.

Also, it looks bulky in pictures but it is really small. A little thicker than a casio but less length and width.

Also, don't buy a camera that doesn't have a viewfinder. I was outside in the sun today and I couldn't see my screen! I love that this camera has a viewfinder!

The Only Cons:
*The battery takes 4.5 hours to charge (but it lasts a long time on full charge)
*Sony uses memory stick PRO DUO instead of SD cards, but Circuit City has a deal that when you buy this camera, you get a free 1GB card (which is all you need.)

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/sony-cybe...

I would reccomend this to anyone...it is really user friendly. Each setting you put it on show a description of what it is. Someone who has never used a digital camera could figure this out with ease!

Best pocket camera in terms of shutter speed?

AJS

I am in the market for a great pocket camera but I would like something with fast shutter speed. Overall lens quality and range of zoom is important too. Anybody with a suggestions?

Answer
I have a Canon SD870IS, and it's the best camera I have ever owned. In the past I've had a Sony DSC-P52, a Fuji A345 and a Sony DSC-W7, and only the W7 comes close in terms of image quality.

It is an 8 MP camera with a 3" LCD, super slim and image stabilization so I never get blurry pictures, if that's why you want a fast shutter speed. You can set it in manual mode to always use ISO 80 (to reduce noise, aka the graininess you see in photos). The higher the ISO, the faster the shutter speed, therefore equaling less blur on other cameras, however with the image stabilization on the SD870IS, you don't need to worry about blur unless your shutter speed is ridiculously long (you can get custom shutter speeds in the menu for cool effects).

It also has a wide-angle lens so you can fit more people in your pictures than with regular point and shoots. The zoom is 3.8X which is better than the normal 3.0X that most compact cameras have. Almost all the pictures come out beautiful with great colours and awesome focus (because of he face detection). The camera's exterior is also VERY nice looking, and the back is a very sleek black, while the front is silver, and you have an option of the area around the lens being silver or black (I have silver).

I know that here in Canada it just dropped in price from $399 to $350, but I've found deals as low as $299 so far, and if you're American, it'll be even lower. HOWEVER, in April, there will be a new version available, the SD790IS...it'll be around the same price. With the new one, they got rid of the wide-angle lens and the zoom is reduced to 3X, and the design of the back is reminiscent of a Motorola RAZR phone (I don't really like that), though the front looks very "classic" and boxy which I do like, and it gives the camera a slimming effect. It is also 10 MP, but almost nobody need 10 MP unless they are making huge poster sized images. I personally prefer my camera because of the back, as well as the wide-angle lens, but if you like the RAZR look, I'm sure the new one is just as great.

DO NOT get a Sony Cybershot, the new models are really just terrible in terms of noise (graininess) in photos, and the new menus are very hard to use, as well as time-consuming. In the past, Sony was my favourite camera brand, but not anymore. (My sister bought a Sony Cybershot DSC-W70 and I hate it.)

My Fujifilm camera was also terrible, poor build quality and poor images. I don't know if they've improved, but I won't go back to them.

My mom and my best friend both had Olympus FE-100 cameras, and both hated it (I even bought my mom a Canon SD750, which I'd recommend if you can't afford the SD870IS, because she hated the Olympus so much, and it was having so many problems...it was hard to get it to stay on for more than a few minutes before it said "low battery" with fully charged NiMh rechargables). STAY AWAY FROM OLYMPUS.

Good luck getting your camera, and if you get a Canon, you will NOT regret it! :) and P.S. Do NOT settle for less if you are worried about money. You will hate yourself if you settle for less because your camera will already be out of date, and it'll probably really suck (for lack of a better word)...that's what happened with my Fuji A345 :(.

For a camera phone is 1.3 megapixels good?

CC 9/24/11

I am using net10 for my cell phone company now. The only camera phones they have are 1.3 megapixels. Is that good?I know uscellular.com (and probably any other phone company) has phones that are 2.0 and 3.0 mega pixels..I would like one of those..but net10 doesn't have them.

Answer
now a days 1.3 MP are not considered good...coz there are many phones available with 3.0 and higher mega pixels ...so if u have money and if u r not satisfied with ur current phone than u should buy a new one...

Looking to purchase good beginner DLSR camera, no previous lenses, starting from scratch and would be happy with just 2 decent lenses, not looking to go pro, just family photos, travel photos, kids' events, etc.

Do I need to get Licensed to provide live 24/7 CCTV Security/Video Monitoring Service in the US?

John

Thinking to start a live 24/7 CCTV security/video monitoring service done over the Internet in the US? Do I (or my employees) need to get licensed on a local, state or national level?

thanks,

John
Thanks for the reply. From Wikipedia I found the different state rules / regulations for security guards. Not sure if it applies also to those that do the remote monitoring on surveillance cameras.

John

Answer
depends on the states

I have done Monitoring video using Ascendent DVR's they sell them in 64ch modules with Raid 5 storage for redundant self healing video backup.

It can also sync with alarms and be used to take control of PTZ cameras.

Usually they are set up for corporations to use internally but it is the same different sites viewed and controlled via one CMS (central monitoring station)

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/ (Go here and click view x4 power point to view the DVR im talking about)

Its quite easy to set up

Hello

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are cheaper then bosch and pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

Questions about home security CCTV systems?

hutchyw117

I live in a terrace house behind a high street of shops and between my house and the shops is a large back alley. Currently there is alot of anti social behaviour going on in the back alley like people setting bins on fire, vandalism and burglary (including my house) just to name a few things! The police and the fire service are always been called out and the people who do these things just get away with it!

I really want to install a CCTV camera on my house pointing into the back alley to see everything that goes on and hopefully catch some people red handed, but I really no nothing about the rules of having CCTV and how to run and record CCTV cameras.

So firstly, am I allowed to put a camera on my house pointing at my back gate and the back alley? Where are the best places to buy cameras? (UK) How do I record what the cameras see?? I have one very slow computer. Could having cameras on my house make my house a target? Anything else you might think will help me??

Thanks!

Answer
I think you should put camera.

I would select network IP camera (because you already have a PC to record video). I have had a good experience with AXIS, and Panasonic IP cameras. Also you can consider Arecont Vision, As an alternative you can install traditional camera with IP Video encoder (like AXIS M7001).

You should find the camera with the right angle of view. Camera lens has a parameter called "focal length". To make a simple modeling you can use a 3D software for CCTV design. Like a demo from JVSG.

Then at last you need a software to record a video. From good ones I recommend LuxRiot, or ICatcher. If you need a budget one use a "Active Webcam". But test the software before purchasing.

The biggest advantage of IP cameras is a possibility to get megapixel resolution. The second advantage is remote monitoring possibility.

Digital Cameras?

Q. What should I be most concerned with when buying a digital camera? For instance, what is the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom? Which should I be most concerned with. Is 6.0 MP good. I should mention that I am not a photography, nor rich, so do not expect the best. But I do want a good quality camera, and not just waste my money. Any advice would be great.

Answer
The 6MP (6 million pixels), is very good, near photographic quality.

Optical zoom is much better than digital zoom. It is ok that your camera has digital zoom, but be sure it has a decent optical zoom as well, as this produces a better image.
It will cost more though, and at 6MP, even if you only have digital zoom, I think you will not be too disapointed. Try to avoid using too much digital zoom. Get closer if you can, you will get better photos.

F number, Light gathering:
The size of the opening behind the lens limits the amount of light than can enter and be focused onto the sensor. Different quality lens are better or worse at limiting distortion. A larger opening ( more light gathering) is better. Higher quality lens cost more, and probably have semi conductive coatings to reduce various types of optical distortion.
F numbers, are usually represented as F/2.0 where the 2.0 is an example number you are interested in. Sometimes listed as 1:2.0
Larger openings mean smaller F numbers ( sort of confusing).
So if you see
1:4.2 or F/4.2
1:3.0 or F/3.0
1:2.0 or F/2.0

The lower number F/2.0 1:2.0 is the better lens for gathering light. It will be able to take the photograph much faster than the F/4.2 lens. This means less blurring of photographs, if you move while the photo is captured.

Batteries: Lithium rechargeable batteries are the best.
They are expensive though...
Donât get a cheap camera with disposable batteries, or disposable lithium.

Memory: The camera will come with a small memory module, the first thing you will need to do, is buy one with more storage.
Shop around, memory is cheap. You should get at least 1GB flash, but larger are available.

The camera will connect to a computer to transfer files, so be sure your PC can connect to the camera, either USB2.0 or Firewire. You can also get a flash reader for your PC.

The camera has a bunch of settings, if you have not had a digital before, you really need to study the manual.
Some useful settings you need to find.
Close up mode, this allows the camera to focus on close up objects, usually as close as 2 inches. This lets you take photos of insects, super close-ups of very small things. Get to know how to enter and return from this mode.
Lighting: There are different types of lighting, such as sun light, indoor fluorescent, and regular filament incandescent bulb lighting.
Because each type of light has a different range of colors, the camera will not produce photos of the objects as you see them.
Depending on the camera, it might assume you are in sunlight unless you set it to indoor fluorescent mode for example.
Be sure you know how to set this type of lighting condition, or everything will be dingy yellow.

Flash: You might not always want a flash, especially of you are taking a close up, it just produces a white out from the glare.
Be sure you know how to turn the flash on an off. If the flash is enabled, it drains power from your battery at a faster rate.

Power: The digital electronics draw quite a bit of power from the batteries if the camera is on. Only turn it on when you are planning a shot, to save battery life.
Transferring photos from the camera to the PC, depending on the camera, may require the camera to be on. Some can transfer power through the USB cable with the camera off, drawing power from the computer supply.

Here is more discussion about digital vs. optical zoom.

The lens focuses the image on to a Silicon chip, with 6 million CMOS transistor sensors. Near photographic quality.

Optical zoom, is the best, where the optics provide the magnification by moving the lens to refocus the magnified image onto the sensor. This type of lens has a variable focal length.
This allows the sensor to use all of its 6 million bits to store the image. And the optics do the magnification.

Digital zoom is where the lens is simple and has a fixed focal length ( "prime lens").
The lens cant change focal length, so it cant change magnification.
Digital zoom is performed by only using the inner part of the digital sensor, and discarding the rest. The small part of the sensor that is used, is scaled up to a full size photograph.
This technique only uses part of the resolution of the photo sensor, and therefore produces a photo of less quality. If you zoom in too far, you might actually be able to see the individual photo sensors. But with 6MP, even 20x zoom will probably look acceptable.

Digital zoom produces a lower resolution image. To explain it in another way, take a close look at your computer screen. If you get really close, you can see the individual color blocks which make up the screen image. The computer screen is probably 1280x1024 pixels. ( about 1MP compared to your camera 6MP) Each one represents the a memory bit in your video card, and can be seen on your computer screen as very small blocks.
If you stand 6 feet away, a photograph on the screen looks pretty good. But if you try to zoom in, by getting closer to the image, you can see the individual blocks.
The digital zoom feature, just discards the outer part of the screen and expands the part in the center, which may reveal the small blocks, if zoomed in too far.
On the other hand, optical zoom uses the lens to focus the magnified image on the entire sensor, so no information is lost.
This produces the best photograph.

BTW: ( It is actually made of red, green and blue blocks, the white area of the screen is actually red+green+blue. You can easily prove it by sneezing onto the screen, spit or place a drop of water on it, the inherent magnification of the water droplet, will allow you to see the individual red, green and blue blocks. )

Which method for pictures gets me the highest quality, my camcorder's 5 MP Digital Camera...?

Chonsie

...or a 1080P video still shot?
The 1080P video has the following specs:

1440 x 1080 H.264 Video @30fps

Answer
the digital camera is going to be better, but it has a tiny sensor so the image will not be as sharp as per say a good normal point and shoot digital camera, or even the much better quality of a dslr.

The video still is a very small image. About 1.5mp max! So the 5mp will be better but again keep in mind that a camcorder is mainly designed to record video. Not to take still frame shots so thus the quality will be lower.

Hope this helps. If you are going ot be taking many still frame shots, then I would suggest getting a simple point and shoot for that purpose. I prefer the Canon line and last I looked, Canon had some sweet deals on thier website. You dont need anything fancy. But beware. I have seen many cameras that say they are 8-12 MP but that is after software editing, so the acutal image is only 4-5 mp. Beware of those, as they are going to give a very poor quality image. Most are off brands, but still be safe.

I was just looking at Amazon, and the Canon Sd1100IS 8mp camera in blue is $149. Its also really small and can fit easy in the pocket and allow for quick candid shots of friends, family and the kids being kids...

For about $110 you can get an A590IS with 8mp also. So keep these in mind. For about $200 you can get the wonderful SX110IS with its 10x zoom and 9mp. Otherwise if you want a top of the line Point and shoot get the G10 or the Sx10IS

Good Luck and happy shooting

5 megapixel camera for phone or digital camera?

I am looking to get a good quality camera, since my 1.3 mp phone camera isnt cutting it anymore. So i saw a phone that has 5mp. How much better quality is this? I also could use a new phone so is it worth it to knock out 2 birds with one stone with this one? What other factors should i look for when buying a digital camera. I only want to spend $50 or so if i buy a digital camera by it self. The phone though is $100. Theres 2 available with the 5 mp camera. One is HTC Hero⢠with Google⢠and the other Samsung Instinct® HD (both with sprint) Im only going to be using the camera for pictures to put on the internet like facebook and for maybe my desktop or something. How good is 5 mp for recording video compared to 1.3mp? Thank you

Answer
My cell phone records 5 mega-pixel images and even though I own several digital cameras and several camcorders, I always have my cell phone with me. I find myself taking pictures with it all the time. Obviously there are few if any manual settings and the camera is very limited that way, but it still takes decent images. If you have been using your camera on your current cell phone, then you know how often you use it. But with 5 MP, you'll use it more often and be very pleased with FB uploads, etc.

New ipod Touch, 3.5 Megapixel camera?

~*iblo

Well i was planning on purchasing a Ipod Touch this summer, but i heard that in september, they will release a new one, that is 2X as fast and has a camera. The Camera is said to have" at least 3.2 megapixels for photographs/1280Ã720 (720P HD) video resolution." MY parents said that if i buy the touch now, and save up money, i can get a good camera in december.
music is more important to me than taking pictures, although it would be nice to have a camera attatched. The new touch should be about 350 dollars. If i bought the touch now, i'd probably buy the 8gb($229) or maybe the 16GB( $300). Is it worth waiting even if the camera isn't that goood?
Thanks:)
Basic question: Is it worth waiting for just a 3.5 megapixel camera?

Answer
No that's not worth waiting for, 3.x mp is crappy quality, They just released the new iphone and that has only a 3.0 mp camera, better than the 2.0mp but still $h*t quality. Any thing less then say 6mp minimum is not worth it to me, plus what about the zoom capabilities...optical zoom(true zoom) is best but if it's only the standard 3x or 4x zoom...big whoop!
It will likely have more GB but your going to $$$$pay a lot more for that for sure! It may have a compass.....so what as far as I know, that's not a big deal for me either.
The prices will rise too.
So if I were you, I would get it now and get yourself a camera for Christmas for less than 1/2 the price and 3 times the photo quality of the Sept 2009 ipod touch.

digital camera megapixel question?

lor

is higher megapixel the better? (image quality)
because i have a 2 mp camera and my brother has a 7 mp camera....when i compared the difference of photos.....i don't see any difference!.....
so that made me wonder???
i heard 4 or 5 megpixels are good enough for everyday pictures.....

Answer
In general higher resolution (more megapixels) means better image quality. There may be situations where that isn't true (i.e. where the higher resolution camera has a low quality lens and the lower resolution camera has a great lens) but generally more megapixels = better image quality.

There may be several reasons why you're not seeing any difference in the images.

1. Many times I've seen people unknowingly using cameras at lower resolutions than the camera is capable of. That lets you put more photos on your memory card, but the quality will be lower. If a 2MP camera and a 7MP camera are both set to 1MP resolution, they're going to look pretty much the same. Check to see if both cameras are shooting at their highest resolution.

2. If you're viewing the images on the camera display or on a PC screen, the resolution of the display or screen is far lower than the maximum resolution of the camera, so you probably won't see any difference. If your PC display is set to 800x600 resolution, that's less than 1/2 megapixel being displayed, so the images will look pretty much the same. Even a 19" monitor set to 1280x1024 is only about 1.25MP, so that's still far less than the maximum resolution of either camera.

3. If you're printing photos at 4x6, you probably won't see much difference. The differences will show up when you get to larger prints like 8x10 or larger. Like with the screen, the smaller size of the print isn't going to show the differences between the cameras. Large prints usually will show the differences.

If you're doing any image editing, having a higher resolution camera can be important. Say you have a photo of Uncle Frank at the beach and you decide you want to crop it down so that the lifeguard stand on the right and that goofy kid who jumped into the picture in the background on the left aren't in the photo and all you have is a nice close-up of Uncle Frank with the sand and water behind him. When you crop the image to only show the parts you want, you're reducing the effective resolution of the photo. If you crop out 1/3 of the image on the right and 1/3 of the image on the left, what remains is only the center 1/3 of the original image. If you shot the original at 7MP, that means that you have about 2.33MP left, because you threw away 2/3 of the image. If you shot the original image at 2MP, that leaves you with only about 0.67MP. You'll probably notice the difference between 2.33MP of image and 0.67MP of image in a 4x6 print.

So if you're going to be doing any image editing and/or printing at larger sizes, having a higher resolution camera may be a good idea. If you're doing just snapshots that you'll be printing at 4x6 or maybe 5x7 or just viewing on a PC screen, then you may not see any benefit to having a 7MP camera over a 2MP camera. And if the 7MP camera is set to shoot at a lower resolution, then there may be no difference at all.

Looking for a camera?

Q. I was looking to buy a digital camera to take pictures of my daughter, like outside, or running, and everything else kids like to do. She is one so she won't sit still so I need something that won't blur. Thanks!

Answer
There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The following link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/ ...

What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...

Lots of great camera tips in these two links. http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

Check this camera. FUJIFILM - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital. This is more camera for the money.
Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. You may be able to view the owners manual at this link. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

DSLR Camera Question!!?

No D

I am planning on buying a new DSLR camera in a about a year. But I don't know what I should look for in a DSLR camera, since I am new to DSLRs. But I do know that I want it to be at least 11 megapixels and I want to be able to click the shutter very fast and the it will still take photos.(By that I mean like I don't want to be able to click the shutter, wait for the camera to load, but like click it every second and still get the camera to take the photo every second.) PLEASE HELP!!

Answer
Most dSLRs have similar basic features. The only true difference would be megapixel count. Other small features that would set some models apart may or may not be trivial to most users.

When looking for a dSLR camera, limit your search to Canon, Nikon and Pentax. They are the big three in 35mm photography and have been making SLRs for a very long time. Your basic concern then would only be price and brand. Canon basically have lots of lenses at a higher price range. Nikon have lots of lenses with more from other brands like Tamron and Sigma. Pentax have a small lineup of lenses but it makes it up with compatibility with all of the lenses it has ever made (with the oldest screw mounts requiring an adapter).

The talk about lenses is inevitable since your body is not expected to last forever. You expand your gear through lenses and when your body starts to fail, replace it with another one that takes your lens collection. That's why you have to choose your brand wisely from the very beginning.

About shutter speed, it doesn't mean that if you have a dSLR, you can click away as rapidly as you want and still get fabulous shots. This is the common mistake people assume. The dSLR, like all other cameras (film or point-and-shoot) depend on light. Without sufficient lighting, picture quality goes down. It all depends on how the user perceives available light and how he adapts to it with the camera. It takes a balance of shutter and aperture settings related to sensor sensitivity and amount of light to make a proper exposure. Most cameras, even the sub $100 point-and-shooters have the capability to take satisfactory pictures as long as you know what you are doing and give it enough light.

Good beginner DSLR camera ?

preston

I need a reasonable beginner DSLR camera with lens anywhere from $400-$500? Any suggestions. Or should I opt for a digital camera like the Nikon LP100 (I think it's called?)? I am a beginner photography enthusiast and hope to be able to do photo shoots for people in the future or get a job as a photographer for a newspaper (I'm 15, so this is a while down the road.) I hope to one day be a photographer for National Geographic! So can I have some suggestions on a gold beginning camera? Thanks so much!

Answer
If you want to go pro, at some point you will need a DSLR. But you don't need a DSLR to learn how to use a camera.

That said, anything about a camera can be taught - except for one thing - composition. Each photographer has to develop their own composition skills, and each photographer will have their own style for doing so. That is the main thing that differentiates the Ansel Adams of the world from the rest of us.

Composition skills can only be developed through experience, and experience is only attained through practice. Practice comes from having a camera that has DSLR-like features.

Your price point is under the range of even entry-level DSLRs. If you are looking to take a few years to learn, look at something like a Nikon P7000 or a Canon G12. Of the two, while they have the same $499 MSRP, the Nikon can be found on-line for under $400, and the Canon not much under $500.

These cameras are "professional" point & shoots, if there is such a thing. At least they could be called high-end compact cameras.

While not having nearly the capability of a DSLR, they certainly have the requisite DSLR-like features, including the all-important Aperture/Shutter priority and Manual modes that allow you to learn how to use a camera. The Nikon can even be manually focused (not sure if the Canon does or not).

These cameras also allow you to shoot in RAW mode so that you can later process them in photoshop, or other software - another skill you will need to learn to go pro.

You would be far ahead of the game to learn a few years on one of these, then make an easier jump to a DSLR when your available finances allow such a purchase.

I own a Nikon DSLR as well as a P7000. The P7000 is my go-to camera if I cannot take my DSLR with me.

DSLR Camera: Nikon D3000 or Canon Rebel XS?

Kristin

Beginner level photographer, looking for a camera that would be best for outside/landscape pictures, mostly for traveling. I think I've narrowed it down to the Nikon D3000 or the Canon Rebel XS? They are both in my $400-500 price range and seem to have similar features. I am partial to Canon as I've owned one before and they are very easy to use, but I'm open to a change. If there is another DSLR camera that is similar, I'm open to suggestions. What should i do? Looking to buy TODAY (Cyber Monday deals!)
Thanks!

Answer
Personally I use a Nikon DSLR and prefer the Nikon option. Nikons tend to be slightly better with noise reduction.

Hi friends which is the best mobile phone in India under 12000?

dude

Answer
For Rs. 12000 there are many options.

I feel Nokia Lumia 620 is the best among all, for the following reasons:
1. It's a nokia - you will get the best service in every Indian City.

2. It is a windows phone - Smart phone features with decent battery backup. Windows market place is growing and you will find all regularly used apps like Whatsapp, facebook, games etc.

3. Solid Hardware - 1 Ghz Dual Core Krait processor and Adreno 305 (no android phone gives this spec for this price) 512 MB is sufficient for windows phone. The phone performance is very smooth.

4. Superb Camera - Though this has a 5 Megapixel camera, the quality of images is outstanding with good amount of detail and good colours. This camera also records HD videos (720p 30fps). It has a VGA front camera for video chatting.

5. Screen size is perfect for video viewing and browsing. Screen quality is awesome and because of it's size, the phone perfectly fits in your pocket.

6. Has A-GPS and GLONASS with nokia maps (Also supports Google maps).

Finally a no nonsense phone with great performance at a decent budget price. At this price point, Samsung android phones offer outdated hardware with outdated features. Sony Xperia M is the next better option but the price is Rs. 14000.

I just bought this camera, is it good?

What I mean is will it take good quality pictures?

vicseo, I wasn't asking if I could get it serviced easily, I was asking if it takes good quality pictures. Get your head out of your ass.

Answer
Why would you first buy a camera and THEN ask if it's ok?

Anyway, it's a no name brand camera and it...
DOES NOT really have 12 megapixels, but only has 5 megapixels...because it uses interpolation to increase the resolution. Sorry, but interpolation is rubbish.

And...it has NO OPTICAL ZOOM, but only has digital zoom, which also is rubbish. So, to get the best images from this camera you should not zoom at all.

But, to see if it takes 'good quality pictures' why don't you go out and take a few pictures to see if YOU think it's good enough? Just don't get too optimistic, though...

good luck

The camera is a GE A730, 7.0 megapixel.... Any help would be appreciated!!! :)

10 MEGA PIXEL DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA

2.4" wide color screen with 32MB flash memory and 8x digital zoom. Includes USB cable and software and pouch.
It looks like this

http://img.alibaba.com/photo/51982631/6_6_Mega_Pixel_Digital_Video_Camera_with_rotatable_LCD_Display.jpg

I want to take video with sound!!! and photos thats pretty much it but i want the photos to come out good. I already heard that this camera is the best in the sun rather than at night which is fine ...
thats all i know.. about it ..

Answer
10 megapixels is more than most amateur photographers will ever need.

Most "point-and-shoot" cameras take excellent pictures with some limitations. The biggest problem is that the small lenses do not capture as much light as a single lense reflex (SLR) camera. The less light, the poorer the picture.

A 4 megapixel SLR will take better pics with a decent lense than a 10 megapixel point-and-shoot.

It all depends on what you're looking to do. For most people, point-and-shoot digital cameras are quite acceptable. And they're getting better all the time.

Megapixel Camera question?!?

T M

I might be buying a new camera and i just wanted to know what megapixels were.
i have a camera with 5 megapixels
but i want this camera --Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
and it has 10.1 megapixels
whats the difference???
what do mega pixels do?

Answer
Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

Check the Memory Card Storage Table at this link:
http://www.digitalphotographywebsite.com/memorycardstoragechart.html ...

Would choose a 3 MP setting unless you plan to print a photo larger than 8 x 10 inches. You actually lose picture quality when you crop a higher MP photo down to a smaller size. It also takes more money, memory space, processing, and transmission time with a higher setting.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

For expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder and ... It's PINK, but it uses a $49.50 Series G Rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery.

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (both hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.
