Best DSLR camera for film making and photography?

Q. I've decided to purchase my first dslr camera. I'm a amateur film maker so I need a camera that can handle that, with excellent video. But I also do a lot of photography, especially sports.
I'm not too concerned with costs. Basically, I want the best possible video and picture quality possible. With quality, I'm not really willing to sacrifice.
On a less important note, I have pretty small hands, so an especially large body might be a problem.

Answer
Film makers use 16 mm and 35 mm motion picture cameras and most of them rent them from a place like here

http://www.birnsandsawyer.com/_camera-rentals/35mm-cameras/

Some dSLR's have a video feature, but are NOT designed to be a primary video camera. For those you can rent them from Birns and Sawyer or buy something like those listed on this link

http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelList?storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&catGroupId=34401&surfModel=AG-HPX370

The above cameras are designed to produce video projects and do an excellent job

ALL video, motion picture and digital still cameras have large camera bodies, but since all but a few shots needed to produce a film/video involve the camera being mounted on a tripod, this should NOT be a problem for you.

Here is a link to the type video camera used by one of my sports shooting colleagues.

http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-broadcastcameras/cat-dvcam/product-DSR400PL/

The lens he has attached to is is a Fujinon ENG Style zoom designed for 1080p

http://www.fujifilmusa.com/products/optical_devices/broadcast-hd-sd/hdtv-lenses/2-3-eng/za-select/za22x76-berd/

While simple $300 P&S cameras shoot both stills and video, neither are what you would want to use if your goal is excellent stills or excellent video.

Can you put any lenses on any dslr camera?

Ernest

I am making a short film and I am wondering if I could put any lenses on any dslr camera?

Answer
No, and you have to be careful even with individual manufacturers.

Nikon's MF lenses don't allow metering on their cheaper DSLRs.

Canon's MF lenses don't fit.

Sony's SLTs (the best for video short of a video camera) take Minolta AF lenses, but NOT MF ones (if it has an aperture ring, it generally won't fit).

Pentax' MF lenses provide Av and M modes (K-mount), or full modes (Ka mount).

Third party (Tamron, Sigma) made for (e.g.) Canon, won't fit Nikon, etc.

Questions about phones? Preferably for someone who has had or have the Samsung Galaxy S3?

highest megapixel camera available currently
on Here we present our pick of top 10 mobile phones within Rs. 25,000.
highest megapixel camera available currently image

Kimmy Scot

I want the Samsung Galaxy S3 but I have some questions first. How much is the actual phone and the plan/monthly payment? Is it cheaper than the iPhone? What is your opinion of this phone? Is it a good phone? Does the screen break easily? Does it have a good camera? What apps can i get? Are any of the other Samsung phones better? Or which one do you prefer? Preferably one that is a touch screen and can get apps.

Answer
I currently have the Samsung Galaxy S3 and an iPhone 4. I cannot compare the iPhone 4 to the Galaxy because the 4 is aging with the 4s that is the current apple phone. However even with these two compared the Galaxy wins hands down in terms of processor speed. Currently the Galaxy is the fastest phone available in the android market and in whole as well. We have yet to wait for the iPhone 5 to be out and what exact specs it will bring. The Galaxy right now is the Ferrari of smartphones. I've had an android phone before, the Motorola droid and the new android OS 4.0 ice cream sandwich is so smooth and fast and is nothing like its old predecessors where it used to lag and be choppy.
It's got neat features being "smart". When you look at the phone's screen for reading or anything the phone's camera will detect your eye movements and will not turn off the screen which normal phones do after a timeout. When you look through your contacts and you hold the phone to your ear it automatically calls the contact you were looking at. When you are away from the phone and you get a missed call or text, it will notify you when you hold your phone by vibrating. When you're in a meeting and you get a call and forgot to turn it to silent you can turn your phone face down on it's screen on a surface OR put your palm over the screen of the phone and it will turn silent. You can take a screenshot of your phones screen just by swiping your palm from right to left on the screen.

So it's got a lot of smart features and more. You can play videos in a pop up display while your browsing the web or texting. The camera is 8 megapixels like the iPhone 4s and because of it's bigger screen it a lot better in taking pictures. It even has a smile sensor that when it detects someone smiling it will snap automatically.

The durability of this phone is great. There are people who say that the Samsung feels cheap for a premium price using plastics, but this is not a bad thing. The phone is lightweight than the iPhone and it doesn't break easily. I dropped my iphone once while standing onto the road because my grip on the phone slipped. The back glass cover panel broke like how glass breaks. I had to replace the back. I already dropped my Galaxy a couple of times without having a case or cover because the phone was just new and cases were not available yet in the first few weeks being released. Nothing happened to the display. Just a minor scratch on the body. Even the iPhone can get scratches and chips.

The Galaxy is slim, lightweight, good design, LTE 4G (the 4s is not LTE compliant, you can use 4g speeds instead of 3g), intelligent, and high performance. Of course it can and will be beaten by another phone, but right now it is the best out in the market being neck and neck with the HTC One X.

Out of the Samsung line, this is the best yet, the next would be the Google Nexus phone by Samsung. You get standard apps and you also have radio in the phone. You can download apps in Google Play Store which is just like the App Store in Apple.

Which is a good camera for a high school photography class?

Kevin

I will be a sophomore in high school next year and new to photography. I am trying to decide which camera I should buy. Unfortunately, I can't spend much (around or less than 500) so I only found this three cameras for my budget.
-Nikon p510(advance point and shoot), Nikon d3000(DSLR) and canon rebel T3(DSLR).
WHICH OF THESE WOULD BE BEST FOR ME? please suggest if you have other examples.

Answer
Low-end Canon or Nikon should do. Those are the two major brands, with the lion's share of the market between them, so you may as well buy one or the other unless there's some compelling reason to do otherwise.

For Canon, you probably want one of the Rebel models. The Rebel XS is the cheapest, at around $530 for the camera plus a decent 18-55mm lens. The Rebel XSi is a bit better and costs about $640 with the same lens. The Rebel T1i is currently the top Rebel, costs about $800 (with the same lens as the other two), and is probably a bit more than she needs; it's a nice camera but I would guess the extra complexity of being able to shoot videos is probably not required for the class.

If it were my daughter, I'd probably give her the XSi. I used one of those for a while and it did a good job. But the XS should do if the XSi seems a bit pricy.

Nikon has the D40 for about $480, but at only 6 megapixels it's pretty low-resolution for a DSLR these days. Even most point-and-shoot cameras do better than that. The D60 costs about $600 and is a better value. Both of these come with an 18-55mm lens similar to Canon's.

Whatever you end up buying, make sure you know that you are getting a lens, without which the camera can't do anything. Most models are available either with a lens, or just the camera body itself (usually marked "Body Only" in Amazon's product title).

The Nokia 6085 Phone

For starters, the 6085 is a mid-tier quad-band clamshell phone. It's got the typical bells and whistles for a mid-tier phone - Bluetooth, camera, expandable microSD memory, FM radio and music player. However, Nokia has NOT released the specs on the camera - which makes me figure that it probably isn't that impressive.

There's a fairly simple external display on the phone, and the main screen supports up to 262k colors. Note that the external display is one single color: blue.

The 6085 seems very similar to all the clamshell phones that Samsung made famous: semi-budget phones that have some decent features, but no real OOMPH feature that stands out from the crowd. I guess that's why it's priced as it is: 175 Euros ($222 USD) before tax/subsidies. I'm sure we'll start seeing this Nokia phone around as the free mobiles that are given out with 2 year contracts.

Meanwhile, I'm still wondering why Nokia hasn't released any thin sized phones to combat the RAZR. Given what a piece of garbage the RAZR is, a Nokia branded phone even with these features would be a force to consider. And I think it would be quite sad if Apple beat out Nokia to the punch by releasing a thin Smartphone.

The Nokia 6085 will be available in several colors: royal pink, seagull silver, black, and baller gold.

how do i make a surveillance dvr out of an old pc?

Q. for connecting 16 cameras.

Answer
Hello

Here is a great system that will do 16 cameras

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/~ascendent/HTML%20E-mail/X4S/x4s.html

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and up to 15 billion per year. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

So I suggest buy a PC based DVR already built not just a PC with a capture card in it.

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies .

The X4S also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

If you are only going to spend 70$ on cameras then you should buy 15 dummy cameras they will be just as effective and cheaper hen swan cameras.

Also as far as night vision or IR cameras go most do not give good images in the dark. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

2 Great IR outdoor cameras
http://ascendentdvr.com/ascentseries2/520tv-line-bullet-camera.html ($95)

http://ascendentdvr.com/vistaseries2/vis-48ir-615.html ($235.00)

Some good CCTV brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (best price/ performance)
www.honeywell.com
www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Economical DVR's
Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's X4S-4120USB DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and smart phones to remotely view and control your cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable from companies who stand behind there products.

Again if you are going to buy no name products save money and get dummy cameras they are just as affective and you will be less disappointed.

Hope this Helps,

What is the best camera for action shots?

delaneythe

I want to start a horse photographing buisness at horse shows and I was wondering what camera would be the best for taking action shots of horses going over jumps and things like that. I also need a camera that will shoot good action shots in low light conditions. It can be a DSLR it just needs to be under $500, I know it is unfortunately not that much money to get a good quality camera but that is all I have.

Answer
Been there, done that.

Best bottom dollar kit for action: Nikon D50 (used); Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM (used). In dim arenas you'll need every last ounce of ISO and aperture you can get. Monopod is recommended.

Remember -- NEVER DISTRACT A HORSE WHILE IT IS JUMPING OR YOU WILL BE TOSSED OUT (happened to me ;-)

Static and ribbon-award shots? Nikon's 18-70 kit lens and SB-800 (you wont need big apertures -- just a big honkin' flash). You'll also need to put the flash on at least a two-foot vertical extension to get rid of the hellacious blue-eye from those big horsey orbs. I used a piece of hockey stick.

Spend the money -- done right, the shots are spectacular and the horse owners have very deep pockets and are mainly bored trophy wives, if you get what I mean. Me, I switched to shooting car races because I couldn't stand the smell.

What kind of DSLR camera is suitable for a beginner photographer?

Eric

Should I go for a new camera or a used one?

Also, what can't a beginner's DSLR camera do? (Eg compared to a camera for an experience pro photographer)?

Thanks!

Answer
DSLR's on the market offer about the same fetures across the board. the difference between a $400 canon 1000d, anon 500D and let's say a 7d is very fine tuned.

The 1000d is the beginner camera from canon. it will allow you to swap out the lenses, utilize manual aperture value, time value, and program modes. also it has a limited selection of automatice modes.

Other more important features such as shutter control, color schemes, and iso options are more limited on this camera.

And example of the iso ratings. the canon 1000d goes up to 1600 I belive, and from what I've seen ISO800 and 1600 on this camera are really unusable. the 500D has the ability to go up to 12,800 and is mostly usable to 6,400 due to it's integraded iso reduction ability, something the lower end models don't have. what does this mean to you? well night shots or low light indoor photography will be more detailed, shprer and have less noise than the cheaper model.

Another thing to look at is the megapixel resolution. The 1000d and most other nikon beginner models, have about 10MP for their picture quality. while the 500d has a 15.1mp sensor. and the 7d has an 18mp counter. this shouldn't come as a suprise, the more you pay, the better your picture quality becomes.

The included kit lens for the 1000d opposed to the 500d as opposed to the 7d are all representitive of the build quality of the camera. the 1000d and 500d both have a basic 18-55mm lens, but the 500d's lens has a better feal to it than the 1000d. the zoom ring is slightly smoother and the auto focus is considerably faster.

The 7d has a very nice 28-135mm zoom lens. it has some features found on more expensive lenses, like a non moving lens focusing ring, and zoom ring. the zoom is even more fine tuned than the other kit lenses and more of the lense is made of metal as opposed to the plastic found on the other kit lenses.

Now comes the issue of video. both the 500d and 7d have hd video recording. the 7d records 1080p at 30fps while the 500d does it in 20fps. the 1000d does not have any video recording at all.

And finally there's build construction. you would expect a $400 camera not to be as well built as an $800 or $1600 camera and you'd be right. the 1000d is cheap and plasticy. the 500d is about the same weight but has a little more solid feal. the 7d is considerably heavier and is ruberized nearly all around it. plus more expensive cameras like the 7d are weather sealed meaning mositure will not permiate the camera if it's raining. you don't find that on the cheaper models.

There are many many more differences between all the dslr types, but it all comes down to how much you are willing to pay for your camera. I would suggest not buying a cheap intro dslr from either canon or nikon, instead look at the more expensive cameras like the 500d or 50d from canon or the d5000 from nikon, whichever one can meat your price point, that would be the one that can work for you now, and the one you can grow with later.

Hope this helps

Which Camera is good for Landscape photography?

whatapwrtr

I have never had anything better than a 100$ digi cam to take photos with. But photography has always been a dream of mine. I want a camera in the 300 - 1000$ range that would be good to take pictures of...well everything but mainly landscape.

The problem is that I dont know which type of model to get. Should I get a dSLR? How good are superzoom cameras? Please help! Now that I finally have money for a cam, i cant wait to get one.

Answer
For the best images a DSLR should be what you're looking for. You want a large sensor for better detail and color. However, the lens used really matters since landscapes are usually done with a wide-angle lens. Another item I consider mandatory for landscape photography is a good solid tripod.

With a basic DSLR like the Sony A580 or Pentax K-r or Canon T3 or Nikon D3100 you'll get an 18-55mm zoom lens. Although 18mm isn't as wide as some people might like its still suitable for making good landscape pictures. The trick is in knowing how.

One of the first things you need to learn about is Depth of Field (DOF). Landscapes require a deep DOF so that everything from the foreground to infinity is in focus, especially since its always a good idea to have something of interest in the foreground. There are only three factors that affect your DOF:

1) The focal length of the lens.
2) The f-stop used.
3) The subject distance.

These sites will help you learn about DOF and how to control it:

1) http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html
2) http://www.kamerasimulator.se/eng/?page_id=2
3) http://www.illustratedphotography.com/photography-tips/basic

At Site 1 you can use the DOF Calculator to compute your DOF using any combination of the three factors imaginable. With a Sony, Pentax or Nikon DSLR and using the 18mm end of your zoom you can achieve a very deep DOF. Here's how:

Set the aperture to f16 and focus on a subject at 5 feet away. Lock the focus.Your DOF will be from 2'-0'' to infinity so anything 2'-0'' in front of your camera to as far as you can see - infinity - will be in focus. Now find a worthy scene and look for something of interest like a piece of driftwood or some flowers - anything you find interesting. Remember to use the Rule of Thirds though. Now as long as you stay a little more than 2'-0'' away from your object of interest it will be in focus as will everything behind it.

Additional tips:

1) Always shoot at your camera's highest resolution. You paid for those megapixels so use them.
2) Use ISO 100.
3) Have your camera on a tripod.
4) Shoot in Aperture Priority. Your goal is to control your DOF so shooting in Aperture Priority allows you to do that.
5) Use the camera's self-timer to release the shutter.

What are your opinions on Casio watches?

tormented_

I want to buy a watch for my boyfriend and i was wondering if Casio watches are any good.. I was thinking about the edifice series. They seem good and are also convenient as price. Anyone who owns one or knows more about the quality of the watches, please help :D

Answer
Casio Watches are good watches for people who just need a watch to tell time. They are not meant for collectors or as jewelry.

Casio Computer Co., Ltd. is a Japanese electronic devices manufacturing company founded in 1946, with its headquarters in Tokyo. Casio is best known for its calculators, audio equipment, PDAs, cameras, musical instruments, and watches. In 1957 Casio released the world's first entirely electric compact calculator.

In the 1980s, its budget electronic instruments and home keyboards gained huge popularity. The company also became well known for the wide variety and innovation of its wristwatches. It is one of the early manufacturers of quartz crystal watches, both digital and analog. It also began selling calculator watches during this time. It was one of the first manufacturers of watches that could display the time in many different time zones and of watches with temperature, atmospheric-pressure, and altitude displays. Today, Casio is most commonly known for durable, large sized watches.

Especially popular are its dual function (LCD and analog) watches, some of which, called Wave Ceptors, receive radio signals daily from an atomic clock to keep accurate time. These watches come with lengthy manuals(50 pages each in English and Spanish, each the size of a business card): those users who master all the intricate features will be able to tell time in many time zones, use alarms and timers, and even follow Daylight-Saving Time; those who ignore or misunderstand the manual can expect many surprises.

A number a notable digital cameras firsts have been made by Casio, including the first consumer digital camera with an LCD screen, the first consumer 3 megapixel camera, the first true ultra-compact model, and the first digital camera to incorporate ceramic lens technology.

Depending on what you want to do with your watch I would check out http://www.thewatchery.com were you can find many watches to compare.

Ayyyy

I am opening up handmade clothes website. I need a camera that takes very good quailty picture.

SLR Camera
1. Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera
2. Sony - A390 14.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

Digital Camera
1.Canon - PowerShot SX30IS 14.0-Megapixel Digital Camera
2.Sony - Cyber-Shot 14.1-Megapixel Digital Camera

Answer
You seem to be familiar with the difference between the 2 types of cameras, so I'd imagine you also are aware of the kind of shots you will want. Personally, I'd go For the Canon Rebel. If you haven't already be sure to check the reviews & prices on Amazon before making a choice. The 2011 models are just starting to be released now & you can get some great deals on the older models. The XS isn't the most current model out now for Canon. The T3i was released very recently it has 18 megapixels & a price to match. Whatever you get be certain that it allows you to expand for the future with additional lenses & accessories.

The digital SLRs or Dslrs, as they are known will provide plenty of future flexibility. The digital units or point & shoot cameras, you mention are what you will live with, since the lens they come with is the only lens they'll ever have.

What is the cheapest camera/slr that is around 14 megapixels?

Q. For christmas I want to ask my parents for possibly an slr that is 14 mega pixels. I've looked on store sites, but I want to know if I can find them cheaper. Around $300 - $400 is the price range I'm looking for. I like lumix, pentax and canon cameras. Hope you can help me out!

Answer
The Pentax K-x at 12.4mp and costing $489.95 at http://www.bhphotovideo.com with free USA shipping is the closest to your budget. The Technical Image Press Association chose the Pentax K-x as their 2010 "Best DSLR Entry Level". Here are its features:

1) A CMOS sensor.

2) Live View.

3) HD Video.

4) Double/multiple exposure capability of from 2 to 9 images on a single frame with Auto EV Compensation.

5) A focusing motor in the camera body so any Pentax AF lens made since 1988 can be used on the K-x and will auto focus as it should.

6) Image Stabilization in the camera body so any lens used becomes an IS lens.

7) A choice of body colors so you don't have to settle for a black camera unless you want to.
http://www.pentaximaging.com/slr

Here is a hands-on review of the K-x:
http://www.shutterbug.net/equipmentreviews/amateur_digital_slrs/0510pentax/index.html

The usually recommended Nikon D3000 has NONE of the features of the Pentax K-x and is $499.95 at B&H.

I suggest doing whatever necessary to stretch your budget to afford the Pentax K-x. No other DSLR in its price range offers comparable features.

What would be better a Nintendo 3DS or an iPad 2?

highest megapixel camera ever built image

Chris

I have an ipad and I was thinking about buying the new iPad 2 for my bday present. But then I heard about the nintendo 3ds and it sounds really cool but I don't kno witch one to buy now because both of them are really impressive. So should I stick with the ipad or should I get something new and different like the 3DS? And what would be some good reasons on why to buy the iPad 2 or the 3DS.

Answer
It all depends on what you want. Both devices are different. Here are some of their features, look through them and see which one suits you best:

Nintendo 3DS pro's:

-Can display full 3D without the need for special glasses
-It can take 3D pictures! Buying a camera that does this costs a lot, but you get it built in the 3DS!
-Higher quality games than the iPad has - 3DS games will last you a lot longer than iPad games, and will most probably be more fun
-You can watch movies and TV sports in 3D!
-You can buy and download additional game content and updates from the Nintendo e-shop
-It is smaller and lighter than the iPad 2, so it is more portable
-You can browse the internet, use facebook, youtube etc. just like on your PC
-You can play games online wirelessley
-You can add people to your 'friends list' - then you can see what games they are playing, you can play with them online, and you can send text messages, drawings (which you make with the 3DS touch screen) or pictures to them
-It can play augmented reality games - these games work by you putting a small card on your table. Then, the 3DS will make a game on your table! To see what I mean, click on the link below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14_EDenxvro - that is a guy playing on his table

Here are some videos of how games look and play on the 3DS:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSvOy_SqNVI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J8IX1mmCTk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A_1IDwX0Cw

Nintendo 3DS cons:

-Even though it can take 3D pictures, it does so at a rather low resolution of 0.3 megapixels (640x480)
-The 3DS has a much shorter battery life than the iPad 2 (it only has 3-5 hours with the 3D effect on, and 5-8 hours with the 3D effect off)
-The 3DS touch screen is very good, however it isn't as responsive and sensitive as the iPad 2's
-Adding friends to your list can be annoying as you need to exchange 12-digit number codes to do so

iPad 2 pro's:

-It has a bigger screen the the 3DS
-It has a lot of free apps, the 3DS's cost money
-You can use live video chat just like with a webcam on your PC
-It has a longer battery life (it lasts roughly 9-10 hours)
-It is capable of faster web-browsing and internet usage
-It has more built in software
-It comes with a larger 'harddrive' (it comes with 16GB - 64GB, whereas the 3DS has 2GB)

iPad 2 Cons:

-Big games like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Super Mario and Assassin's Creed are almost never available for the iPad, and when they are it is often a cheaper, less fun version
-The iPad 2 costs a lot more than the 3DS (it costs a minimum of £325, whereas the 3DS can be found for a minimum of £195)
-The iPad 2 takes longer to charge up once the battery has drained
-It cannont take 3D pictures or 3D video like the 3DS, and its picture resolution is also very low (0.7 megapixels)

So really, its down to what you want. If price is an issue, then go for the 3DS as it can be found for up to £125 cheaper. If its not an issue, then look at what they can do. The 3DS will offer amazing 3D without glasses, it is also one of the first machines ever to take real 3D pictures, it allows you to watch 3D movies and sports, and will have better games. However, gaming is the main feature of the 3DS. So, if you don't like to play games, or only play them from time to time, then the 3DS might not be for you. The iPad is less portable, but offers live video chat, a better, larger screen along with more space to store pictures and videos, and faster internet connections.

I hope I've helped, and happy birthday!

Where can I find a very good SLR digital camera with at least 10mp or more would be better for sale?

I NEED TO GET A BETTER CAMERA - I'M WANTING TO START PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS. ALL CAMERA'S ARE VERY EXPENSIVE EVEN ONLINE AUCTIONS! DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE OR WHO MIGHT HAVE ONE FOR SALE? THANKS, YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Answer
If you do not already have a camera system, I would recommend Nikon. I've been a Nikon user for years and I've used Canon as well. Both are excellent systems but my main reason for prefering Nikon over Canon is how easy they are to use. Settings that I change constantly from picture to picture are right there at my finger tips. I'm sure once you're used to a Canon it's just as easy, but it just seems that Nikon are more no-nonsense than Canon. Just my opinion, and an opinion that was formed after using both.

I have a photography business and I would not recommend buying anything you're planning to try and make a profit on from eBay. Any "retailers" you find online that have a deal that is just "too good to be true", is probably because it is. I bought my first DSLR on eBay and fortunately didn't get burned. But almost everyone else I know that tried to buy there has.

I always buy new from Adorama.com. They are a really reputable vendor who if you get a product from them and within their return policy decide that you don't like something, you can send it back, no questions asked.

As far as Nikon goes, I would recommend getting a D200 (10mp), or the new D300 (12mp i think). The D80 and the D40(x) are nice cameras, but they're not professional grade. They're not built to professional durability standards, and they don't use CF memory cards which are the professional standard. I personally have 2x D200's and LOVE them. I have them both with the optional vertical grip (which allows use of 2 batteries at a time in them instead of 1 without the attachment). This attachment makes taking vertical full body shots so easy!!

If you're going to be shooting mostly people... get a Fuji. They use Nikon lenses and have the absolute best color for people pictures of any DSLR available. Only bad thing, their operation is soooooo stinking SLOW!! The menus are confusing and every function on the camera goes at a snails pace. But the picture quality is amazing.

If you're on a budget, I would recommend buying really nice lenses (because lenses will stay current a lot longer than your digital body will) and buying a Nikon D70s. It's only 6mp, but megapixels don't make better images, they make bigger images. The more megapixels there are in your image, the bigger print you'll be able to make. (I shoot sports all the time with a Nikon D2h with it set on 2mp, and I print 5x7's and 8x10's all day with no distortion or pixelation to the images.) But yes, spend your money on the lenses and look into buying a used or refurbished D70s from Adorama (www.adorama.com). The D70s uses CF memory cards so whenever you have made some money and are ready to step up to a professional grade camera (or pro-sumer as the D200/300 would be) you won't have to reinvest in a whole new format of memory cards.

Not exactly sure what you're planning on shooting, but I shoot a lot of weddings, portraits, and sports... here are the Nikon lenses I use for all of my jobs:

Nikon 10.5mm fisheye
Nikon 12-24mm f/4
Nikon 17-55mm DX f/2.8
Nikon 70-200mm DX VR f/2.8
Nikon 80-400mm VR (use this for sports)

Which ever system you decide to go with, plan to stick with it for a long time. You'll be investing a lot of money into lenses and bodies and it'll be money wasted if a year from now you switch over to the other and then have to rebuy all your lenses for the other system.

Another thing... whatever you do... do not let some camera store jockey sell you on 3rd party lenses. Camera stores make more money selling you Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, etc. lenses than they do selling Canon or Nikon. Whatever system you have, buy those lenses. Canon and Nikon know how to make lenses for their cameras, and they know how to do it better than anyone else. Also, their glass is higher quality. You'll get what you pay for in buying the brand that goes with your camera.

Hope I was of some sort of help.... Just speaking from my own experience in getting situated with my own business and gear.

Don't forget when you buy, you'll need memory cards, I recommend SanDisk and Lexar, as I'm sure any other pro would do the same. Don't mess with off brands. Those are more prone to data loss than anything else. Also, you'll probably need a flash.... most cameras have them built in, but they generally don't sit high enough and can cast a shadow in the bottom of your pictures where the flash isn't reaching over the end of your lens. Also... buy spare batteries. When I bought my D200's I bought 3 batteries for each to make a total of 4 for each since I was planning on using the vertical grip attachment that allowed for the use of 2 batteries at a time.

Good luck!!

These 2 items are quite big combined and my backpack is already big enough for me to handle. Is there something that everybody uses to carry the accessories when they go backpacking? Should I get a small side bag to hold my cameras and lenses?

Answer
You could get a sling and have it slung in the front, therefore helping to distribute some of the weight. (Kind of like the baby slings or a big sling purse you can cross over your shoulder/chest). You could also look into something large enough to go around your waist with the bulk in the front of your body. Adding another bag to your back area would not have any benefit and you want to keep your hands free so these are my suggestions. Good luck and have fun! Be safe!

What is the best Nikon Coolpix digital camera?

Q. Basicallt, I am about to get a new camera, and the kind i have decided on is the Nikon Coolpix series
But there are so many to choose from, and i really can't decide...
does anyone know the best one?

Answer
I have two, the 8800 and the P2. The 8800 has been discontinued but you can still find them, and it is a fantastic camera - 8 megapixels, 10X optical zoom, vibration reduction, and excellent macro capabilities. It is as close as you can get to having a digital SLR without having to change lenses!

My P2 is a pocket sized 5 mega pixel "snapshooter" with 3X zoom that I carry in my purse. It's also wireless, and can send the photos to my laptop as I take them and display them in an ongoing slideshow, with the new ones added each time.

Both take excellent quality photos and video and I'm very happy with both purchases.

I have a buddy who believes that technology is ruining everything. yet the individual is a photographer. so i want to explain that the camera itself is a piece of technological ingenuity. please help me build a case to explain to this person how contradictory his belief is.
the argument dosen't lie if its new or old technology but if its technology itself. a 100 year old human and a 1 year old human are both still human. even if its not a breakthrough it does not alter the fact of its origin. a piece of technological ingenuity

Answer
Of course today's digital cameras are a piece of "technological ingenuity", and with each year that passes they will become more and more advanced. For example, I think within the next 5 years we will see affordable full frame sensor DSLR's for the masses.

But is this technology "ruining everything".. Hmm, well for photography as an art I believe that the sheer amount of cameras in the world today, plus the popularity of the internet and the ability to view billions of images online, has seriously affected peoples perception of what constitutes a good photo. Today's digital cameras will not last more than a few years before they pack up and die. Even the top of the range DSLR's have a lifespan of 300,000 clicks (yes that's a lot, but it is still a limited lifespan). Plus with every camera bought, it is obsolete in a few months by the next latest and greatest wonder camera. The camera companies love making people think that their perfectly adequate last years model is in some way inferior to this years new release, usually by feeding them the Megapixel Myth.. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

Now I have a collection of MF and 35mm cameras. A couple are from the 1930's and still function as good as the day they rolled off the production line 80 years ago. Many of the cameras in my collection have no electronics, a few do not even need batteries!, so they will continue to function perfectly well beyond even my lifetime... A Canon 450D bought today?... Give it 5 years and it is fit for the bin. Some cheaper P&S digital cameras?, even less than that. So technology is ruining something, it is ruining the environment. The capacitors used in today's digital cameras are extremely polluting both in their manufacture and disposal. Batteries are of course bad for the environment, as are plastics and the production of digital sensors (a high reject rate). Now I'm going to steer away from the environmental part of the issue because to be honest, I don't hold particularly strong views on it.

I have a camera I will use as an example.. I have a Zeiss Ikon Nettar 515/2 medium format camera. Produced in the 1930's, no electronics, just a nice lens and a nice format. The resolution of this camera rivals today's DSLR's, and it costs around £10 from eBay. You select the aperture, you select the shutter speed, you set the focus distance, and you press the shutter release... That's it!... And that's all photography is about!.. All the silly gadgets and gizmos manufacturers are cramming into todays DSLR's are utterly unnecessary to 99% of people buying them. Does somebody who wants to take snaps of their daughter in her school play need 15mp and 10 fps?.. Of course not. Yet consumers are lapping it up every year, selling their DSLR's and buying new ones because they have GPS or an extra MP...

When you consider what photography is actually about it does not matter how it is recorded, whether it is on a camera phone, a pinhole camera, a 35mm rangefinder, a DSLR, or a Hasselblad H4D, the end result is all that matters... But technology is turning people into lazy photographers. People no longer bother or want to learn about exposure, why bother?.. The camera will do a half-assed effort on your behalf.

I've said it before and I will say it again.. Digital is the best AND the worst thing to happen to photography as an art.

.

How good is the camera on the DSi?

XxxxX

Is it clear? Can you zoom? How many mega pixles?

Answer
The camera is about as good or clear as older cameras in cellphones.
Since there is no real lens or other optical components except the image sensor chip, it's effectively a pinhole camera.

The cameras have 0.3 Megapixel (i.e. 640x480)

The cameras can zoom, but it's digital zoom, not an optical zoom. This means, when you zoom into an object, the effective resolution is reduced, and you get a more coarse picture.

I am saving up for a DSLR camera. I really like the Canon rebel T3i, T4i and the Nikon D5100... which do you recomend? I also wanted to know what lens to get with them? When looking and testing out the cameras in best buy with the kit lense, it was a little fuzzy and buggy in the backround and not as precise as i wanted it. I am thinking about getting the Tamron 17-55mm 2.8 I believe it was.

Answer
Canon is best for beginners, and the eos 600d would be my pick at the moment. With this, the best deals would be with the 18-55mm stock lens that's on most websites deals. This lens basically gives you a wide angle view for wide shots, and a bit of zoom (but not much). For a small bit extra, you can replace this lens with a 55-250mm lens, which is the equivalent of 7x zoom on a point and shoot. Basically, the cheaper lens does the wide angle bit, and the more expensive one does the zoom. You can get one which does both, but its more expensive, heavier (a big factor if you carry it around with you) and bulkier

What should i look for when shopping for a DSLR camera?

zerodfgh

I am looking to replace my point and shoot camera with a DSLR camera. Does anyone have any suggestions to a camera for a beginner? What specs should i look for?

Answer
Any of the entry level DSLRs would keep you happy for a few years. I'd pick either Canon or Nikon. I have a LOT of contact with other photographers and time and time again it seems that either one of those are most likely to make their owners happy.

The most important part is to buy only the best lenses - camera bodies get upgraded, lenses stay with us.
You WILL regret buying cheap lenses.
Don't rush into buying lenses. Start with a kit lens, get to know your camera, that lens, and all photographic principles.
Through time and through use, you will eventually KNOW what other lenses you'll need/want.
The more time you'll take, the less likely you are to regret your choices.

If you know anyone close to you with a camera, consider borrowing lenses and "picking their brain" about their camera and whatever else they know.

Go to a store and hold a few cameras, see how they feel to YOU.

Do lots of research before you buy, and start learning about photography, too.

Keep in mind that buying a DSLR isn't cheap, even if you find a good deal for body and kit lens.

You'll also want and/or need a few other things such as tripod, filters, a bag, sensor cleaning gear, a second battery, memory cards, perhaps a remote shutter release etc.

That's just the small stuff - I can guarantee you that you'll also want more and more lenses.
You'll also want a decent flash some day.

See how that list just goes on and on?
Owning a DSLR isn't cheap - at least not until you have built up a nice stash of gear.

Just some food for thought........

What is an overall good camera for the price?

wonny

I am looking for a camera for under 200 dollars. I would like at least 6 megapixels, good zoom, and a quality camera. I am looking at the Exilim camera by Casio. Is that a good camera? If not what would you suggest?

Answer
Sorry, VM, but everyone seems to be asking the same question tonight. PLEASE GIVE VM A "BEST ANSWER" SELECTION, as he was here first - about 6 times already tonight!

I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon Powershot A630 or A640 for myself. These cameras have the larger sensor (1/1.8" or 5.2 mm x 7.2 mm) that is nearly double the sensor size you find in many point and shoot cameras and this translates into better image quality. They allow fully automatic use or total user control and offer several stages in between. The only significant difference between these cameras is that the A630 is 8 MP and the A640 is 10 MP.

If you're going to spend up to $200, look at a Canon Powershot A630. My brother has had his A630 for over a year and it's a very nice camera. You can get it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $184.

Buy a 1 or 2 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. The Ultra II would be excellent, but if you are really into video, you might prefer the faster Extreme III. These cards cost from about $25-45 at B&H and several other outlets.

Photoshop CS/Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Lightroom Differences?

dslr camera vector image

Jessica

Okay, I have always used Photoshop CS, currently I'm still using CS3 because I refuse to upgrade. I'm going to be getting a new computer soon and I want a professional program but I don't necessarily need CS. I've never had the chance to use Elements or Lightroom and am looking at this as a cheaper option to replace my CS. I do not have the registration code for mine anymore as I just had it with my ex and it was his program. I do not plan to be asking him for his registration code, so I'd like to know my limitations with Elements or Lightroom.

Currently I mostly use it to create things like RP sigs for my roleplays and character based stuff. The one things that is a necessity for me is to be able to make transparent backgrounds. So yeah I just need to know what limitations I might have for designing simple stuff for online. I also need text. Again I have never use either of these programs.

And yes I know I can give the trials a run, but I just want to know where to start at.

Answer
If you don't have a DSLR camera, don't bother getting Lightroom. Its main strength is organizing and enhancing collections of raw format images. It isn't designed for cut-and-paste editing.

Photoshop Elements should be fine for your needs. It doesn't have any of regular Photoshop's vector tools (aside from basic Shapes), nor advanced features like channel editing, non-RGB color modes, or the "natural" brush engine. However, core features like layers and blending modes are all there. It is also a lot less expensive than regular Photoshop, usually around $100.

There are less expensive options, including open source software like GIMP and Paint.NET.

Is a 2 megapixels camera on a cell phone have good enough quality?

Jessica

i love to take picture so i would like to have a good camera on my cell to have easy access to a camera

Answer
2 megapixels isn't terrible high res, especially these days. I'm surprised you can find a camera with such poor resolution on the market these days.

Most smartphones (Android OS, Blackberry, iPhones, Nokia's line of phones, Windows Mobile) are pushing 5 megapixels in the mid-range, and I've seen 8 megapixel cams on some of the higher-end phones.

The real issue, though, isn't the resolution: how do you want to use the camera? If you're looking to use it for quick snapshots, it's fine. If you're looking to replace a normal camera, I'd suggest going for something with 5 megapixels.

what contributes more for a good picture clarity in a camera ? megapixels or lens ?

sonu

My friend tells me that his 5 megapixel mobile phone doesn't capture as clear pictures as a 3 megapixel Sony digital camera with good lenses......If it's true then....Please enlighten me on this........thank you

Answer
The lens, absolutely.

Consider it this way.
A coke can sized $1000 DSLR lens has a hard time to resolve 20MP on a sensor that is as big as a large coin.
Given this, would it be realistic to assume that a tiny, cheap plastic lens could resolve 5MP on a sensor as small as a pinhead? That's just a fourth of the resolution but a sensor that is about 1/50th of the size of a full frame DSLR. This means that that small, cheap lens would have to be made to a much higher degree of precision than the big, expensive, professional lens. That's not likely, is it?

Will my current Canon lens fit new camera?

I have a Canon Rebel XS DSLR camera. I am planning on purchasing a film camera, and I found a Canon Rebel X 35 mm SLR film camera on ebay, but it's just the body. Could I use the lens from my DSLR for the film camera as well? Would it fit? It doesn't say what type of lens the film camera takes so I'm not sure if it is EF or EF-S. Thank you
Also what about a Rebel G?

Answer
If the lens you have for your Canon Xs is an EF-S such as the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 it can't be used on the Rebel X. Only Canon EF lenses can be used on the Rebel X or a full-frame DSLR such as the 6D, 5D or 1D. An EF-S lens will damage the Rebel X or full-frame DSLR.

Canon auto focus 35mm cameras: EF lenses only

Canon cropped-sensor DSLR cameras: EF and EF-S lenses

Canon full-frame DSLR cameras: EF lenses only

What would be the Nikon DSLR of the 35mm film world?

Once in a while I want to shoot good pictures. However, I do not want to buy an expensive DSLR camera. I would hardly use this camera, that is why I wouldn't mind film for the little I would actually use it. So what would the Nikon DSLR equivalent be 10-15 years ago.

Answer
Entry level: N65. N80 N90 was a good camera. I have an F100, N6006, and N2000 (the 6006 and the 2000 are older) The F4 and F5 were pro models and were/are very good camera bodies. Here is a link:

Which is better, the Sony Ericsson Zylo or the Sony Ericsson Spiro?

highest megapixel camera phone 2010 image

Dylan Lee

Im buying either one and im wondering which is better.

Answer
The Zylo is Sony Ericsson's latest Walkman phone. It comes with a 2.6-inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera and HSDPA connectivity. It is also the first and only Sony Ericsson handset to support the lossless FLAC format. We tested it to see how good a phone it is and more importantly how good a Walkman phone it is.

Sony Ericsson Zylo is an audiophiles dream - it supports the HD FLAC audio format, a high-quality lossless audio codec.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo was released in July of 2010, and the phone has received mixed reviews from the people. It is not a smart phone, and in this age, a simple phone does little to pique the interests of the people.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo is available in three distinct colors, namely the Jazz Black, Chacha Silver and the Swing Pink. Overall, the phone is quite a handy buy for those people who just want to keep a connection with the outside world, because for one, the lack of smart phone capabilities really sets the phone behind and for two, the phone does not have a lot of options inside that would impress users.

What exactly is the Droid X?

broken-hea

I'm writing a newspaper article for my school about the Droid X but I am completely un-tech savvy. If some one could explain to me some of the things it does and if you have one if it has lived up to your expectations of what you thought it could do. I tried to interview some kids in my school but apparently high schoolers aren't fortunate enough to have such a high tech phone. thanks for your help.

Answer
The Motorola Droid X is an Android-based smartphone by Motorola, distributed exclusively by Verizon Wireless in the US.

Wi-Fi capability (can access wireless internet the same way a laptop can)

HDMI output (can display video in high definition)

8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording (can capture high quality photographs and video)

1.0 GHz TI OMAP3630-1000 processor (i'm not a programmer but I would assume this means it computes fairly fast)

a 4.3" FWVGA LCD display (a quality display screen)

and 3G wireless hot-spot capability (3G is the type of network most smartphones run on)

The Droid X has a dedicated camera button instead of a shutter button on the touch screen. (meaning the button is on the side instead of on the touch screen like the iPhone which can be difficult and leads to less acuracy)

The Droid X comes with 8 GB of internal flash memory (about 1,750, 10,000 photos or 10 hours of video)

and a 16GB on a MicroSD card included (up to 3,500 songs or 20,000 photos or 20 hours of video(upgradeable to 32GB) total memory expandable up to 40 GB.

Unlike the Motorola Droid, the Droid X does not have a physical keyboard, but instead features Swype and a multi-touch QWERTY keyboard.

Like most Android phones it has GPS (global positioning system)

, text to speech and live traffic. It does not have a trackball, but an equivalent workaround can be tried via keyboard

The smartphone was released on July 15, 2010 at a price of US$199, after $100 rebate with a 2 year contract.

Customers with a Verizon contract ending in 2010 can upgrade. Otherwise, the retail price of the device is $569.

Which is the best DSLR bag which is rain proof and can fit in a laptop & a tripod?

I have bought a 60D recently and Im searching for a bag that will take in my DSLR along with a laptop slot & a tripod which needs to be rain proof? I dont want anything costly or anything, something really simple and cheap. Which one should I go for?

Answer
All of Think Tank's bags have "raincoats", and many can hold a laptop and strap a tripod. Two I can think of are the StreetWalker Harddrive, and Urban Disguise 50 V2 (you need version 2 for the tripod straps). While they are not necessarily cheap, they are built well and have a lifetime warranty. So they are cheap over time.

Other brands, such as Tamrac offers several bags, including the Excursion (the large bag especially), with a raincoat, laptop, and tripod mount, as well as the Expedition 5, 6, etc. The Expedition series does not have a raincoat, but rather uses seals around the zippers and waterproof materials so you don't need one.

Of course, there are also offerings from LowePro, Tenba, and others.

However, may of the other brands are as costly as Think Tank bags, and without a lifetime warranty; which is one reason why I have gone to Think Tank bags.

But with any of these bags, check to make sure your laptop will fit. Many bags advertise they can hold a bigger laptop than they actually can.

This is one time you should go to a camera store rather than purchasing on-line. The camera store will probably let you test fit your laptop, camera, etc. on the bag to make sure it is the correct size.

One warning:

If you buy a bag that can hold everything, you will end up with a bag that is too heavy.

So I buy a bag a bit smaller as I just put the stuff in it for the day. That requires me to select which lenses I need, and results in leaving my battery chargers home - as I carry a second battery instead, and so on.

Since you are looking for a bag for a laptop, you are probably on the verge of having a bag that is too heavy. In this case, I would only buy something that is a backpack, or something that can be converted to a backpack like Think Tank's Urban Disguise 50 V2 (with the shoulder harness attachment). A shoulder bag with a laptop in it is going to be heavy.

I do have one bag that will hold a laptop, that I use for vacation and travel, as that is the only time I take both camera and computer. The bag is a Think Tank Airport International, which is a rolling suitcase kind of bag. And I also take a small day bag as well, as the large bag becomes the "mother ship" carrying the stuff I think I will need on the trip, and the day bag only holds the camera and another lens, which will be all I take each day.

If it sounds complicated, here is a video:

What is a camera that looks really fancy?

Billian

I want a medium quality digital camera that looks like a DSLR. It's sort of a weird request, but I think it would be cool to look like I had a cool expensive camera.

Answer
You might be interested in 'bridge cameras', which have DSLR features but use a permanently-attached lens. Example series include:
- Canon PowerShot G and SX
- Nikon Coolpix P
- Olympus SP
- Panasonic DMC-FX, -FZ

I think the other guys are misinterpreting "medium quality". "Medium format" refers to cameras that have sensors larger than 35mm, and as such are much higher quality.

[add] lol, one of the idiot spammers thinks you're asking about medium size dog harnesses.

I am new to photography. What is the best affordable DSLR camera for a beginner in the current market? My budget is around $500-600.

Answer
For the small price, Canon EOS Rebel T3 camera really packs a big punch. It was a no-brainer for me to choose Canon for my first DSLR. Every single camera I've ever owned is a Canon, and I've never been disappointed. This camera is great for the beginner photographer, and even for the more advanced photographer. It's a breeze to learn how to work all of its functions and most importantly, it delivers such amazing quality photos. The kit comes with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 image stabilization lens. Even with a moderately wide aperture, the lens performs exceptionally well under low-light situations. I will eventually grow out of this lens, but for now it's doing well for me.

What price should I pay for a dslr camera ?

Rhubarb

I'm saving up for a dslr camera and I've seen some under £500 with a lense included but I think the quailty won't be as good as a £700 one including the lense :L what should I do ?

Answer
Dano is correct...Photography is roughly 70% photographer skill/experience, 20% lens quality, and 10% camera body

Both Canon and Nikon make nice cameras. The best thing to do is visit an actual camera shop, like Jessops (not bestbuy/walmart/ASDA) and try the different brands/models within your budget to see which feels the best to YOU. I bought a Canon for its ergonomics/feel/menu and control layout and a fellow photog chose Nikon for the same reason....it is about personal preference.

The one thing to remember is to budget in extra money to cover an extra battery, memory cards, camera case, a USB memory card reader, and taxes (these can add another £130-£160 to the camera price).

Also, most camera shops offer free beginner camera/photography classes (and free prints) when you buy a camera there.
