What is a good digital/film camera for me?

500 megapixel camera image

NotoFroto

I travel a lot and LOVE to take pictures. I would really love to have the ability to take high quality pictures (the same quality you can buy in the store).

I have a Kodak Easy share (5 megapixels) camera. I really liked this camera and it took good photos for a beginner model.

However I feel like there was a lot I couldnt do.

I was on a midnight train from Budapest to Serbia and tried to take some pictures from it with the window open. The pictures couldnt turn out. It was an unbelievable shot that I missed.

I would really love a camera that would be able to take quality pictures from moving trains and other things. I dont want to spend a fortune (nothing over $500).

I am a beginner with cameras, but photography is something I would love to learn.

Any Ideas on a good camera that would fit my budget?

Answer
If you're willing to buy a film camera, and don't mind to buy used, $500 is a lot of money to work with.

If you're serious about photography, I'd suggest buying and learning to use an older all manual camera. If you're willing to devote the time and energy to doing this, I would suggest starting with a Canon FTb and 50mm 1.4 lens(FD mount). This combination should cost $150 or less from a used camera dealer(such as KEH.com-their bargain stuff is great).

As you learn to use this camera, you can add more lenses and so forth. Beyond the 50mm, a 28mm 2.8 and 135mm 2.8, at about $50 each.

I have a rather large investment in the Canon FD(manual focus) system, with several great lenses. The lenses are for the most part very high quality, and are available inexpensively.

What Nikon photography camera is better?

Chaz

I got a Nikon D3s for Christmas. It's only a 12 megapixel camera. I'm disappointed that such a big camera only has 12 mega pixels. The D7000 has a bigger number (7000) and it has more mega pixels. If I trade in my new D3s before I take it out of the box, how much more would I have to pay to get a D7000?

Answer
I'll tell you what I'll do for you, as a favor. Send me the D3s, along with only an additional $1,500 (USD), and I will have a brand new D7000 shipped directly to you.

at highest settings?

Answer
These are specs required:
Intel Processor-Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz
AMD Processor-Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5800+
Nvidia Graphics Card-GeForce GTS 240
ATI Graphics Card-Radeon HD 3870
RAM (Memory)- 2 GB
Hard Disk Space- 9 GB
Direct X- 9

According to Sony you should have the following:

Sony Vaio F11 Specs:
Operating System Genuine Windows ® 7 Home Premium (64bit)
Architecture Intel ® PM55 Express Chipset
CPU Intel ® Core ⢠i5-520M Processor
Power and Performance with Intel ® Turbo Boost Technology
Processor Speed (GHz) 2,4
Max Turbo Boost Speed (GHz) 2,93
L2/L3 Cache (MB) 3
Number of Cores 2
Colour H: Gray, W: White
Memory Size (GB) 4 DDR3 SDRAM PC3-8500 1066MHz
Hard Drive:500GB Serial ATA,5400 rpm
Optical Drive Type Blu-ray Disc ⢠Player * BD ROM / DVD +-RW / +-R DL / RAM

Wireless LAN Type 802.11 a / b / g / n
Bluetooth
Camera 0.3 megapixels
Weight with Supplied Battery (Kg) 3.1
Warranty 2 Years

Now your ram is fine as well as your CPU but the Graphics card is a bit under, also note that the game isn't fully released yet. So specs can change from now till then, but people have played Crysis 2 with a crappier Graphics card then you in demo. So best shot would be to test the demo out on the laptop see how it runs, but personally doubt it will be smooth at highest setting possible. But it will be playable just at a lower setting is all :) hope this helped ya :D

Sprint HTC EVO and Samsung Epic?

Mr. Dick H

I want to know ALL the features that the Epic has and ALL the features that the EVO has. If both of them share the same ability, list it on both lists. Thanks.

Answer
Processor

Winner: Samsung Epic 4G

When it comes to power, neither phone is a slouch, but minor differences do manifest a marked gap between them. Samsung uses a 1GHz Hummingbird chip that shares a bloodline with the one used in the iPhone 4, while the EVO 4G uses a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Which wins out when hummingbirds and dragons go to battle? The runty little bird powering the Epic. Check out AndroidCentralâs benchmark of the EVO 4G and Samsung Captivate (which has almost identical specs to the Epic 4G, but comes on AT&T) side by side. It averaged 55.1 fps to 42.9 fps in a gaming test, and turned in higher scores in the Neocore processing benchmark, as well.
Display

Winner: HTC EVO 4G

What might be the greyest area in our comparison comes down to a matter of preference. With a 4.3-inch LCD screen, the HTC EVO 4G has both immense size and sunlight-resistance in its favor. With a 4.0-inch OLED screen, the Samsung Epic 4G looks like a glittering gem beside its super-sized HTC counterpart⦠but fades to a dingy bluish gray the moment you bring it out into the sun. Resolution on both models is an identical 800 x 480. While movie fans might prefer the Epicâs brilliant color, weâre awarding this one to the EVO 4G based on practicality.
Camera

Winner: HTC EVO 4G

Weâve said it before and weâll say it again: Resolution does not make a camera. But in this case, the 8-megapixel camera in the EVO 4G really is a better shot than the 5-megapixel camera in the Epic 4G. Our test shots showed the Epic returning overly dark outdoor shots in comparison to the EVO 4G, even though they come closer to parity indoors. Small a difference as it makes, the EVO 4G also has a two LEDs for its flash, while the Epic gets only one.
Videoconferencing

Winner: HTC EVO 4G

Besides opening the door for faster Web surfing and services, the 4G connectivity has made it possible to make face-to-face videoconference calls without Wi-Fi. Both the EVO 4G and Epic 4G offer front-facing cameras to make it possible, but the EVO 4G once again outstacks the Epic 4G on resolution, offering 1.3 megapixels to its 0.3 megapixels (VGA). That said, it doesnât pose much of a practical difference, considering bandwidth requirements will crush video quality down to a blotchy mess anyway. Weâll hand this one to HTC for the tech specs â with a bright red asterisk that resolution matters even less than normal here.
Battery Life

Winner: Draw

The EVO 4G taught us that you donât go fast without burning a little gas to do it. The phone quickly earned a reputation for dismal battery life with heavy 4G use, and not surprisingly, HTC never posted official estimates for it. Funny thing: Neither has Samsung for the Epic 4G. While the manufacturers grin and shrug rather than delivering âofficialâ battery estimates, our unscientific testing yielded about six hours of on and off use on the EVO 4G, and the Epic 4G performed very similarly. No surprise, considering they both use 1500 mAh batteries. Chalk this one up to a draw.

what are the advantages of having a 2.0 megapixel camera as opposed to a 1.3 megapixel?

Answer
Usually, I'd say that there is not much difference between two cameras that are only 1 MP apart, but in this case, the 2.0 MP will be quite a bit better.

This answer is overkill for your question, but you can read it and learn...

If you always plan to compose your pictures perfectly, you don't need a whole lot of pixels. These days, I'd say that 5 MP or even 4 MP is fine for the average snapshooter and this can be obtained without unreasonable expense. If you want to allow for cropping, which means enlarging only a portion of your image, the more pixels the better.

Imagine taking a scenic view and then noticing that the middle 20% of the photo would make an even better picture. Suppose you take a picture of a whole group of people and Aunt Clara really, really looks great in the picture, but everyone else looks lousy. If you have the pixels to work with, you can still make a decent print of Aunt Clara that she would be happy to have. If you buy an 8-to-10 MP camera and don't want to TAKE large photos, you can always set the camera to a lower file size. You can never go the other direction, though. Unless the cost is a major issue, buy the camera with more pixels. You will never be sorry that you did, but you might one day be sorry that you didn't.

I have a few photos on Flickr to include in a discussion on how many pixels are enough. Go to my page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/ Near the top, click on "tags." In the "Jump to" box, enter the word "Pixels" and then press the "GO" button. Some of the pictures are from a 4 MP or even 3 MP camera, showing you what you might expect without any cropping. I think they are quite acceptable. Some of the pictures are from a 10 MP camera (the swan and the pansies), showing the value of having those large images so that you can crop a smaller image out of the original picture and still end up with a satisfactory image. There is one VGA picture, just to show what you could expect from 640 x 480 pixels - not much.

Having said all that, though, pixels are not the only measure of image quality. The sensor size is important as well as the image processing software included in the camera. (See http://www.flickr.com/photos/7189769@N04/476181751/
You need to read reviews if you want a critical understanding of image quality for particular cameras. Try http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ for more information on the cameras you are considering. Pixels are not the decision maker, but they are the tie breaker, so go for the higher pixel count. You can go there and click on "Buying Guide" and then "Features Search" to specify how many pixels you want to look at.

You can also go to http://www.steves-digicams.com/default.htm and click on "Our reviews," where you will find catagories of cameras arranged by pixel count.

business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?

megapixel camera system image

sbarber

Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

Answer
Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

Lisa

I want to buy a good digital camera but i'm not sure which to get. I was checking out the kodak v1233 camera it's 12 MP, and it sounds pretty decent, but i'm getting some mixed feedback on it. is it any good.

i want a camera on a budget of 100-150ish. under 200.
i'm into photography so i would like a camera that is pretty good for that.

does higher MP mean better pictures.

Answer
don't get that kodak camera, it's terrible, they have nothing good to say about, when you have so many megapixels in such a small camera, it could sometimes be a bad thing. Stay away from kodak, they have nothing good for you ( in my opinion ). on amazon.com those cameras that say they have all those megapixels, leave them regretting their purchase. i would suggest you go with one of the following

CANON
NIKON
SONY

in my opinion, and experience, those are the most trusted cameras, and have been for many years. They each have cameras in your price range, canon especially, i know that nikon has some high-end ones, and go above and beyond your budget.

Therefore, i think you should go with canon

try the following on
http://amazon.com
and just type them in to look at the pros and cons

the canon powershot a550
the canon powershot a560
the canon powershot a570is
the canon powershot a630
the canon powershot a580

those are the ones i recommend, and i have experience with the canon powershot a550, and i didn't have any complaints.

Yours Sincerely,
Nathan Grammatico

How can I turn my digital camera into a webcam?

I have a nikon digital camera, and it came with the USB cable that connects it to upload pics. I have a friend who lives in another state that's been wanting me to get one, but I'd rather not go out and buy one, if possible.

i am a high school senior and have thought about maybe becoming a nature photographer, i love taking pictures of the beautiful world... i have an idea of how colors would come together and angles that would make them look good... i just got my first 24x megapixel fujifilm camera for christmas.. i was wondering what steps i might need to start taking and looking into to go to school to be a NATURE photographer... what kind of schooling is needed? please only serious answers

Answer
That would depend what you mean by nature. If it's landscapes and such then you can try selling good quality prints locally. Wildlife.. that's another cup of tea. Most of the people in that field have a degree in a relevant area and an incredible amount of talent and perseverance.

Neither is a field in which it's easy to make a living, there's a huge amount of amateurs competing and some of those are very good.

What's a good professional camera to buy?

DUDER

Hi, I'm into photography, but i'm not really into the whole camera world right now. I was wondering which cameras are good to buy right now? I know Nikon or Canon will do it, but which models. I don't plan to spend more than $1000 dollars on this camera because it's my first one, but i want to be satisfied until it actually brakes or something, what do you guys recommend?

Answer
One thing you're gonna wanna keep in mind is that once you move into professional photography with interchangeable lens systems, most of your money should go towards the glass rather than the body. Obviously starting out it's not as big a consideration, one long-range lens should take care of everything and then maybe a good value portrait lens would be a good idea, but once you get your next camera, you'll want to be able to use the lenses from your previous cameras. In short, do research into the companies, see what areas each excels in, and pick a horse.

Yours is a growing demographic of people who want to move up in photography without breaking the bank, and all of the major manufacturers are responding accordingly. The latest from Canon is the EOS Digital Rebel T1i, which has 15.1 megapixels and shoots HD video, a very new feature to the world of DSLRs. Nikon's offering is the D5000, which I'm not as familiar with since I'm a Canon user (a very satisfied one might I add). Each of these should have enough creative control to satisfy your needs without costing too much. And my advice, to further save on costs, is to buy the camera body only, with no kit lens, and find what's called a "walkaround" lens, since it has enough focal range to cover most needs and doesn't require constant changing of lenses. Make sure it's high quality so that when you move on to your next camera you won't have to replace it because of optical defects that would be more pronounced on higher end cameras. And as I mentioned, you also might want a high value low cost portrait lens. The magic bullet of DSLR users is a 50mm f1.8 lens. High speed, low light capabilities, and usually within $100 (I pciked up my Canon for 80).
Best of luck!

No, I haven't done this, thank goodness, but I was just wondering as I noticed that my lens cover wasn't on my DSLR camera in the case. Can you replace just the scratched surface, or do you have to get a whole new lens??

Answer
... very little! I have seen photos from lenses with small scratches and even one or two with small chips taken out of the lens (1mm square sizes). You couldn't tell from the pictures.

A small scratch or chip is what one would expect from mishandling a lens. The glass is very, very tough, and will resist most things.

Any force strong enough to do more than superficial damage would most likely break any filter on a lens; filter glass is also quite strong--thin, but strong. Now, you not only have the object that broke the filter to damage the lens, but now the filter fragments, themselves! Filter glass has a better chance of scratching your lens that the object that broke the filter in the first place!

I have seen pictures of several lenses after they took a fall, where the lens hit something and busted the filter. Most of the lenses had to be sent to the manufacturer to remove the filter ring! One sustained heavy damage. Photos taken with those lenses prior to repair showed very little effect in the photos (well, the heavy damage one wouldn't focus anymore as well, but that's a 6+ foot drop onto concrete...).

Also, filters can affect your photos; in fact, that's what they're meant to do! Putting a cheap filter on a $1000+ "L" lens just to protect it is turning that lens into, well, crap. I had a lens that wasn't focusing very well; things were soft. I realized that this lens (which I bought used) had a UV filter on it that I never touched. I removed the filter; the difference was noticeable. The filter has been sitting on my shelf every since.

My advice: Use filters for the following reasons, only.
Photographic effects - polarization, star-burst, neutral-density, etc. Protection only during damaging conditions/environment - sand, hail, salt-water spray, etc. For every day shooting, use a lens hood! The lens hood prevents most things from getting too close to the lens, and gives the added advantage (well, the primary usage) of preventing lens flare from slighting off-axis light sources. Most top-of-the-line lenses come with lens hoods for a reason.

For cleaning, get a micro-fiber cloth for small issues. I also got a "lens pen" that works very well; one end is a retractable brush for brushing loose dust, dirt, etc. from the lens. The other is a sort of "micro-polisher" of sorts, that can clean fingerprint smudges, etc.

And if you ever do scratch or chip the lens, take some shots through it to see if you even can tell; I'm betting you won't be able to!

what are the good options in instant photo camera market in India ?

I want to buy an instant photo camera and I have no idea as to which companies and what camera are good . I am totally new to it . I have no idea about prices too . Please help me out . I want a good camera and good photos (who dosen't ??) and I hope not too costly , I dont think I would like a digital camera coz I already have a sony handycam . Please help me out .

Answer
First you have to decide what is your intended usage for the camera.

If you have professional intentions you need to go in for a DSLR, then decide upon the model and brand.

If you just want it for fun and clicking family pictures, go for any normal digital camera that's about 10-12 megapixels. Nearly all companies have similar features, give or take a few.

Either way you will have to buy a digital camera only - film cameras are passe.

Remember a video camera's primary job is to take videos, so it'll never be too good in still photo results. The same also works vice versa for a still camera.

You can choose from various companies models like Sony, Nikon, Canon which are market leaders.

Cheaper versions would be available in companies like Minolta, Olympus etc.

You can even buy a camera online. It works out quite well for most people.

What type of camera should I buy?

Matthew Ju

I am interested in buying a camera for fine art purposes. So, my question is, what kinda of camera should I buy? I have been using my 5 mega pixel camera on my phone but I know a real camera would be much better. I am looking for a digital camera with good optics and is durable. I would also like to keep it under $250. Thank you an advance.

Answer
I assume you're looking for something just a little bit better than your camera phone, as opposed to buying some big-@ss professional camera.

Just go to Walmart or Target and look at the cameras you have on display. Any of those would be excellent choices. for me, it's highly importnat how the controls work, and how large the zoom is.
You don't have to worry about megapixels at stores like that, because they'll be selling the best cameras available, with the highest megapixels possible. You can get some very good point & shoot digital cameras for $100-120, especialy up to $150.

Also, it's good to pick the cameras up to see how they feel in your hand, to make sure it feels good, and not clumsy.

Almost any camera you buy at stores like that will have very good lense, and options. YOu'll never use 1/4 of the options and controls these cameras have!! It's like buying a really cool laptop and using it only to email.

what does it mean if a camera is on auto?

dslr camera cage
on ... Shoulder Support Mount Rig With Cage For DSLR DV Video Making Camera
dslr camera cage image

s c

Answer
It refer to the mode where the camera will set the aperture and shutter speed for you automatically as you depress the shutter button halfway down. Some will also focus automatically. There are a few cameras (Nikon, Canon, Minolta, etc) where the cameras will also set the ISO (film sensitivity) as you install the film, and advance the film AND rewind the film as you take the last photo. Some even come with a feature where the camera will also sense when there's not enough light for a handheld photo (which will cause blurring since the shutter must stay open for a longer period of time, say 1/30th second or longer) and cause the built-in flash to pop up and activate.

Automation makes many SLRs and DSLRs act like point-and-shoot cameras but will yield slightly better results because of the better lenses they have over and above the point-and-shoot consumer level cameras.

By the way, there are two semi-auto modes: one is the aperture priority, where you select the aperture you want the camera to use, and the camera will automatically select the corresponding shutter speed for a correct exposure. The other is the shutter speed priority where you select how long the lens will stay open, and the camera will set the corresponding aperture automatically for a correct exposure.

Of course, this is really a great feature but it is NOT foolproof and some circumstances require the photographer to know when and how to override all the automation, and when to use the pop-up flash for fill-in light (like to avoid a silhouette if the subject is standing with the light or sun coming from behind him/her...). Also, there are situations where the automatic focus mechanism can be fooled by the background designs or details, or even the foreground objects, like the bars of a cage and you want to focus on the animal that is a few feet further back instead).

Good luck and best wishes.

Cameras...what to buy?!?

I have always loved photography and have always tried to take amazing pictures with the camera i have (not a very good one!) and i have also been told i have an 'eye' for taking photos. I am going to South Africa in December and i am cage diving with Great White Sharks. A lot of time will be spent on the boat and i want a camera so i can take photos of the sharks, whales, seals etc that breach the water and also take photos of the amazing views in Cape Town. I would like a DSLR camera that's good but i don't have a huge amount of money and i am hoping to spend £300-400. Hopefully in the future i will be able to afford a better camera but im hoping you will be able to give me advice on cameras in that price range. Thanks for your help!

megapixel camera resolution chart image

I'm talking like huge. You know when you go in fancy restaurants and they have photographs for sale that are like a couple grand, like that. I'm guessing maybe 6 ft long and 4 feet tall. To get those huge prints without any image quality loss such as noise and stuff like that, would I need a Canon 1Ds with 21 mega pixels? Or would a 12 mega pixel Nikon D3 or D300 work for that?

Answer
Well, Thom Hogan has a chart here:
http://www.bythom.com/printsizes.htm

A Canon 5DMarkII is probably the best high resolution camera, due to its (relatively) low price and excellent performance.

Also, might want to consider large format film. Well scanned, they can easily push 100 megapixels, and the basic supplies and cameras aren't very much more than a 5DMkII and a few lenses should cost.

How many pics can a 4 GB in a SD card hold?

jenna

I want to find a chart with how many megapixels per pic vs GB. I have a 14 meg camera and want to know how many pics will each GB hold. I am thinking about getting an 8 GB.

Answer
There is a chart specific to your camera in your owners manual.

That is the only way to figure out the capacity of your 4 GB card. It is not just the pixel count on the cameras sensor, but also the resolution you have the camera set and if you are shooting both RAW and JPEG image files and the quality of the JPEG's

What ever card size is listed, just do the math.

My 12 MP sensored camera with a 4 GB card holds 109 images (I shoot RAW + JPEG fine), the 8 GB; 213

is there a progam in the canon rebel xti for panoramic photos?

dslr camera with panoramic feature image
Q. i need help!!! i have a project due and i dont have any programs for my camera.PLEASE HELP!

Answer
No. No dslr camera has this feature - it's just another cheesy snappers feature.

You'll have to download / buy software to make panoramic photos with your camera. Beyond that you'll have to learn how to shoot for the editor. That means shooting photos that will actually stitch together to look right as a panorama.

There's no doubt several write ups on the subject on the web so Google or Bing for them.

SLR digital cameras with Panoramic mode?

killerwhal

I'm looking to purchase a new digital camera. For about 5/6 years I've used a small point-and-shoot Canon Powershot A 520, and it had a mode on there known as the photo-stitch mode (where I can shoot pictures that match with one another, and when I upload the pictures on my laptop, I stitch the photos together to make a panoramic picture). So far, I've noticed that most point-and-shoot digital cameras have this mode. The SLR digital cameras (for example, an Olympus E-5, a Nikon D3200, etc) do not have this mode, or so I've researched. I don't wish to go back to using a small point-and-shoot digital camera just to have the panoramic feature I want because I want to use an SLR digital camera and have the ability to change lenses...a camera with a black, bulky body feature (like the Canon EOS series or the Nikon D series). I really enjoy taking panoramic photos just in case you're wondering why I want a panoramic feature on my camera. Are there any specific brand SLR digital cameras out there that have the panoramic feature I'm looking for? I already have the software for Photo-stitch. I'm looking for serious, professional answers to this question.
So, in other words...it doesn't matter what type of SLR digital camera I get for myself. If I wanted to do panoramic pictures, I'd have to have a steady hand. If I don't have a steady hand, I'll have to use a tripod. That makes sense. But if SLR digital cameras do not have the panoramic mode, how come point-and-shoot digital cameras do have the mode? The Canon Powershot A 520 has that mode, and that camera is a point-and-shoot.

Answer
There really is no reason you would need such a feature in a dSLR camera

Just shoot two or three overlapping shots and merge them in a program like Photoshop.

Here is a sample using three overlapping images

http://s862.photobucket.com/albums/ab182/fotomanaz/Answers%20album/?action=view&current=iWhiskeyRow.jpg

This shot was done hand holding the camera, but unless you are very experienced keeping a camera level while shooting overlapping shots, you may want to use a tripod

Which is better as a started photography camera Nikon Coolpix p7000 or Nikon Coolpix P500?

dslr camera year 2011
on top 10 best selling digital slr cameras in 2012 top 10 technology
dslr camera year 2011 image

I am getting started as an amiture photographer and on a low budget, which would be a better camera. I am very teck-savy and learn fast so that will not be an issue.

Answer
I have the P7000, and it is a pretty sophisticated advanced amateur camera. The good news though is that it has auto modes that allow you as a beginner to start using the camera, then as you advance, switch over to manual modes.

It has tons more features than the P500.

Some of the advanced features (at least for a point & shoot) are:

- Automatic, Video, Program/Aperture/Shutter/Manual exposure modes, and 3 user-defined modes.
- Exposure compensation dial.
- RAW and JPG capability.
- 1/1.7" sensor. While not as large as a DSLR, it is larger than the P500.
- fast f/2.8 lens (although it is a variable lens - up to f/5.6 at the telephoto end).
- Hot shoe - so you can use an external flash.
- You can use filters, such as a circular polarizer with an optional lens-tube attachment.
- Optical viewfinder as well as a LCD screen.
- Can use Nikon's ML-L3 infrared remote.
- Bracketing for Exposure, Color Balance, and Focus.
- Can manually focus the lens.
- Single and continuous shutter (but 1.5 frames per second isn't real fast).

Pretty impressive for a compact camera.

The good news is that although it has a MSRP of $499, you can buy them at Amazon and other places for under $400. Its the best camera in my view for $400.

The bad news; well not so bad. Is that it is being replaced soon with the P7100. This is not so bad news as the camera is only a year old, so this is pretty typical with cameras. But that means the price might even go down a bit, but caveat that with trying to find one in stock after the announcement.

I am hearing the P7100 will be announced in August 2011, and availability sometime next fall.

I also have a DSLR, but the P7000 is my go-to camera when I cannot take the DSLR due to it's size, weight, or if I am going somewhere where it could get damaged.

Easy point and shoot camera similar to canon t2i?

Emily

My aunt was blessed with a Canon t2i for last year's (2011) Christmas gift. And unless I am using it, it sits in her closet unused mainly because she has no idea how to use it. It KILLS me to see such a neglected DSLR, so I offered to buy it from her. The only thing is that if I did, she'd be left w/o a camera completely. So I figure I try to find an easy point and shoot that has the same quality as the t2i? The video accessory would be nice too, I just want to make a fair trade with her so she doesn't feel scammed. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Would like to add that the more basic, the better.

Answer
It is a very nice idea to buy your aunt a replacement camera, but what you do not know, a P&S camera cannot nearly approach the quality of a dSLR because it has a sensor that is much smaller than a dSLR, like 15 times smaller.

That said, look at the Canon G15 or Nikon Coolpix S7700

The Nikon has a slightly longer zoom range and has an articulated LCD screen. Both produce excellent images and may find their way into her hands more often than the nice T2i

Visit a store that sells both camera before you discuss this with your aunt. You should have some enough information to answer any questions she needs.

What are the differences between the Sidekick LX and the Sidekick Slide?

Jason R

i.e. features, music players, cameras, screens, prices. Has Motorola added any new features too the slide and has Hiptop added anything new to the LX?

Answer
OK, kids--hope you've been nice this year, because here's something you might want to add to your holiday wish lists. Today, T-Mobile announced not one, but two new Sidekicks to be added to its lineup: the T-Mobile Sidekick LX and the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide.
Let's start with the latter since it brings something new to the mobile messaging device: a slide-up screen (all together now: oooohhh, ahhhh). Unlike previous models, which have been manufactured by Sharp/Danger, the Sidekick Slide is made by Motorola and features a smaller design. It measures 4.6 inches wide by 2.6 inches high by 0.6 inch deep and weighs 5.3 ounces, while the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 comes in at 5.1 inches wide by 2.3 inches high by 0.8 inch deep and 6.7 ounces and the Sidekick iD is 5.1 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.8 inch and 6.2 ounces. And hallelujah--it has a higher resolution screen at 320x240 pixels and 65,000 colors. The Slide still has all the messaging options that made the Sidekick popular in the first place, including a personal T-mail account, support for POP3 and IMAP e-mail, integrated AIM, Windows Live, and Yahoo instant messaging clients, and text and multimedia messaging. The quad-band phone also supports the new MySpace Mobile application (a separate download), which you can peep on the phone's Web browser that is said to have better JavaScript support. Other goodies include Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera with no (!!) video-recording capabilities, and a music player that requires the use of a microSD memory card but supports MP3 and AAC files. The Sidekick Slide will be in stores starting November 7 for $199.99 with a two-year contract.
The T-Mobile Sidekick LX goes the more traditional route in terms of design with its swivel screen. The LX is made by Sharp, and fortunately the company also decided to improve the device's mug with a larger 3-inch, 65,000-color TFT display and 400x240 pixel resolution. It's trimmed down a bit in weight at 5.7 ounces but otherwise retains the same dimensions as the Sidekick 3 mentioned above. You'll have your choice of two colors--midnight blue or espresso brown--and you can program it to light up like a Christmas tree to alert you to text messages, e-mail, and so forth. The Sidekick LX has all the same messaging features of the Slide and also works with MySpace Mobile. Final highlights of the quad-band phone include integrated Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera (again, no video recording), an MP3 and AAC music player, rated talk-time battery life of 6.8 hours, and a microSD expansion slot. T-Mobile customers get first dibs on the LX starting October 17, while the rest of the world can buy it in stores and online on October 24. Pricing is set at $299.99 with a two-year contract.

Now, we haven't had a chance to play around with these two new Sidekicks yet--we're hearing promises of the next week or two--so it's hard to comment about the new designs, which seem to be the biggest difference between the two devices and the Sidekick 3. Frankly, I wish there was a little more in the multimedia department considering the youth appeal of the Sidekick. Anyway, I'm curious: Among the current Sidekick owners and potential Sidekick owners, which one of these devices are you more interested in and why? Is there enough there to make you want to buy it?

i wanted to buy a dslr camera (canon rebel xti or nikon d40x) and was wondering will i get a better discount/deal for the before christmas sale or after christmas sale. any input appreciated.

Answer
Ahem. "Gray" cameras from Nikon or Canon are not plastic versions of metal cameras sold in the USA. Rather, they are identical cameras that have NOT been brought into the country by official import channels. Since Nikon and Canon do not have any control or share of the distribution, they refuse to provide the same level of support and service. It would be like you buying something from one store, and expecting another store to help you with how to use your new item, or expecting free adjustments. Gray market cameras are physically identical (except for the occasional label), but have not earned warranty or after warranty support. Example: Nikon will never repair a gray market Nikon in the USA, even if you offer to pay in full.

My advise for buying a camera? Buy it now. Trust me, there are huge discounts now for your Canon Rebel XTi or Nikon D40x. Yes, there will be some discounts after Xmas, but there's two major concerns.
1. You may be buying a camera that someone got as a gift, and returned. The stores will "check" them, and put them back on the shelf.
2. You'll miss all the great photos for the next few weeks. Missed photos are lost photos.

In either case, since you've narrowed your choices down, I make one strong recommendation. Go into a camera store and try both camera bodies out. See which one suits your hands, your style, and feels most like an extension of you. More bells and whistles mean nothing if the camera gets in the way of your photography.

Hope this is helpful.

any thanksgiving sales of camera that you have aware of?

Q. i would like to get a dslr camera for myself, i think thanksgiving sales might be a good time to look for one.

Answer
There should probably be some deals on the entry level DSLRs... like the D40 or Canon Rebel XTi. Of these I would opt for the D40 as its a better build quality than the entry level Canons. Usually (for point and shoots) the cameras that go on sale are the crummy ones.

Is there a digital compact camera that I can use for tethered photography?

I want to hook a camera up to my macbook and fire the shutter directly from the computer. I don't want to spend the money on a DSLR - is there a pocket camera that allows this with a macintosh?

Answer
I have not seen a (lower-end) compact/point-and-shoot digital camera that can be tethered to a laptop and remotely controlled. That doesn't mean, however, they're not available. However--if any non-DSLR cameras have these features, they'll most-likely be available with the higher-end models (many of which, like the Canon Powershot G series aren't really "compact"--although much smaller and lighter than a DSLR).

Now--if you're looking for a low-end budget (and truly "compact") point-and-shoot camera, that you can literally put in your pocket; you may be very hard-pressed to find one that does. Tethering requires additional electronics/programming that many consumers in the budget point and shoot camera target demographic either don't need or don't want to pay for.

You might want to check the product lines of both Nikon and Canon--for starters; because I know (from using them professionally) that their mid- and higher-end DSLRs can be tethered to a computer and be remotely controlled.

Here are their websites:

How many Megapixels should a good, modern camera have?

Liam

I'm looking for a new camera, and I wanted to know how many megapixels a good camera would have as I have never bought one. I would like a good one! I will be taking pictures at a concert and on the go, while I go and see places. So could someone please show me in the right direction? Thank you.

Answer
megapixels are not a measure of image quality. It's just a potential for resolution or detail. A higher pixel count will not mean less noise, better color, contrast or dynamic range.

You didn't mention what kind of camera you want, a cheap compact, a compact with a large image sensor or a dSLR?

If you are going for a simple compact, you want the one with the lowest pixel count and that has the features you will actually want/use. The image sensors are so tiny in your run of the mill camera that you would find at Target or Bestbuy, that the image quality actually goes down when the MP goes up.

Camera companies add more to sell more cameras, and their brain washing has worked because you are here asking how much you need. If you are looking at dSLRs or ILC compacts with large sensors, for the most part pixel counts don't matter. The image sensor is so massive compared to the tiny ones used in compacts, it just means nothing.

It has gotten out of hand though, four dSLR cameras ruined by too many pixels, The Nikon D3200, D5200, Sony A65, and A77.

I'm doing some research on DSLR cameras before i buy. I'm unsure as to which camera will be able to capture an amazing landscape e.g. a sun set. I know all about wide angle lens but was looking for some info on the body of the camera. preferably under $â¬Â£1000. thanks

Answer
it's your lens/skill/experience/artist eye that create great photo

not just a camera body
