Digital slr camera recommendation for beginners?

I prefer from nikon or canon. I was thinking d3100? 5100? d90? t4i?

I am trying to make this a hobby of mine.
I am a beginner but would like a camera that can expand beyond the basics. I want one with high performance and lasting durability. I don't know if years matter but 2011-2012 would be my preferable choice?

If you are very knowledgeable in this field, can you list some DETAIL recommendations?
What is aperture? What lenses is the best?

A Digital slr is known as a DSLR in the photography world. The nikon d5100 a excelent and decently priced camera for beginners. Anything more and you will be completely lost. Aperture is the balance of light in the intake when the shutters close. So basically its the ammount of light it take in. If you mess up the aperture, the entire picture will not come out. So, the shutter closes at a really fast speed, such as for sports, it has less time to take in light so you are going to need to ballance the aperture with that, therefor needing a greater aperture. For something such as fireworks, you need a very slow shutter speed and a VERY low aperture. If you are new to it, i would strongly suggest just your run of the mill digital camera to start. It takes a lot of time to get familiarized with DSLRs and SLRs.

So my favorite video camera of ten years finally busted yesterday. :( I really need to get a new camera ASAP! I really would like to get one that I can use in college for when I major in digital cinema next fall as well as film projects right now... so something professional but not super ubber expensive would be nice. Thanks!

Three basic kinds of video cameras commonly used for student film projects are prosumer Mini DV, HD DSLR and Compact HD cameras.
If you want a professional tool to use throughout your studies, you want to look for a prosumer Mini DV camera and not a regular consumer Mini DV camera.The Panasonic DVX-100A or 100B prosumer Mini DV cameras have 24p mode to give your project the look of film. HD DSLR's are digital cameras designed to shoot both still pictures and video. The Canon 7D HD DSLR was used to shoot the feature film "Like Crazy" directed by Drake Doremus (2011) and "Tiny Furniture" directed by Lena Dunham (2010). Compact HD cameras like the Sony EX3 and the Sony HVR-Z7U shoot in high definition and 24p and can produce images unmistakable from what you see on television.
Try typing the name of any video camera you are considering into you-tube in order to see sample footage. You can find used prosumer Mini DV, HD DSLR and Compact HD cameras for affordable rates on craigslist or at www.bandh.com. Which is better as a started photography camera Nikon Coolpix p7000 or Nikon Coolpix P500?

I am getting started as an amiture photographer and on a low budget, which would be a better camera. I am very teck-savy and learn fast so that will not be an issue.

I have the P7000, and it is a pretty sophisticated advanced amateur camera. The good news though is that it has auto modes that allow you as a beginner to start using the camera, then as you advance, switch over to manual modes.

It has tons more features than the P500.

Some of the advanced features (at least for a point & shoot) are:

- Automatic, Video, Program/Aperture/Shutter/Manual exposure modes, and 3 user-defined modes.
- Exposure compensation dial.
- RAW and JPG capability.
- 1/1.7" sensor. While not as large as a DSLR, it is larger than the P500.
- fast f/2.8 lens (although it is a variable lens - up to f/5.6 at the telephoto end).
- Hot shoe - so you can use an external flash.
- You can use filters, such as a circular polarizer with an optional lens-tube attachment.
- Optical viewfinder as well as a LCD screen.
- Can use Nikon's ML-L3 infrared remote.
- Bracketing for Exposure, Color Balance, and Focus.
- Can manually focus the lens.
- Single and continuous shutter (but 1.5 frames per second isn't real fast).

Pretty impressive for a compact camera.

The good news is that although it has a MSRP of $499, you can buy them at Amazon and other places for under $400. Its the best camera in my view for $400.

The bad news; well not so bad. Is that it is being replaced soon with the P7100. This is not so bad news as the camera is only a year old, so this is pretty typical with cameras. But that means the price might even go down a bit, but caveat that with trying to find one in stock after the announcement.

I am hearing the P7100 will be announced in August 2011, and availability sometime next fall.

I also have a DSLR, but the P7000 is my go-to camera when I cannot take the DSLR due to it's size, weight, or if I am going somewhere where it could get damaged.

Easy point and shoot camera similar to canon t2i?

My aunt was blessed with a Canon t2i for last year's (2011) Christmas gift. And unless I am using it, it sits in her closet unused mainly because she has no idea how to use it. It KILLS me to see such a neglected DSLR, so I offered to buy it from her. The only thing is that if I did, she'd be left w/o a camera completely. So I figure I try to find an easy point and shoot that has the same quality as the t2i? The video accessory would be nice too, I just want to make a fair trade with her so she doesn't feel scammed. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Would like to add that the more basic, the better.

It is a very nice idea to buy your aunt a replacement camera, but what you do not know, a P&S camera cannot nearly approach the quality of a dSLR because it has a sensor that is much smaller than a dSLR, like 15 times smaller.

That said, look at the Canon G15 or Nikon Coolpix S7700

The Nikon has a slightly longer zoom range and has an articulated LCD screen. Both produce excellent images and may find their way into her hands more often than the nice T2i

Visit a store that sells both camera before you discuss this with your aunt. You should have some enough information to answer any questions she needs.

id love to know when is the best time to purchase a DSLR. im looking into investing in a great camera with outstanding picture quality and technology. Where can all the good deals be found? what time of year is perfect for this sort of purchase?

The best time would be when the camera maker of your choice announces newer models. Then, if you don't have to have the "latest & greatest", you can get great mark-down deals on the previous models. It's like buying cars. When the 2012 models are arriving, it's a great time to buy a new 2011.

There are many contests which offer SLR Camera as prizes.. You need to keep searching for them and might hit the jackpot!

The one that is going on now is from Nikon (Nikon Photo Contest International 2010-2011). They are offering different cameras ranging from Nikon D3S digital-SLR camera (costing Rs 2.9 lac) to D5000 (Rs 50K). There are 53 cameras to be won and just not that, you will have Lenses, Speedlight and other accessories along with this. Indians are open to participate.

Some tips to win:
# Do check the previous years winners list and you can get an idea of the kind of photos that get selected for finals
