I want a medium quality digital camera that looks like a DSLR. It's sort of a weird request, but I think it would be cool to look like I had a cool expensive camera.

Answer
You might be interested in 'bridge cameras', which have DSLR features but use a permanently-attached lens. Example series include:
- Canon PowerShot G and SX
- Nikon Coolpix P
- Olympus SP
- Panasonic DMC-FX, -FZ

I think the other guys are misinterpreting "medium quality". "Medium format" refers to cameras that have sensors larger than 35mm, and as such are much higher quality.

[add] lol, one of the idiot spammers thinks you're asking about medium size dog harnesses.

How should I place my camera in my case?

Amanda J

I have a DSLR with the standard kit lens which recently got jammed and is completely useless now. I'm beginning to wonder (I never dropped it) if it had something to do it the way I put it in the case. I would always put it with the lens at the bottom of the case. Could the weight of my camera on the lens possibly be the reason why it jammed? I've been doing this every time I put it in, but now I'm wondering if it would be better if I put my lens facing up? Or does it not matter?

Answer
I honestly don't think the orientation matters that much. Your camera could have failed for any number of reasons. If you think mechanical shock for transport was the cause, I suggest you buy a camera bag with a suspension unit for the SLR. I own a Case Logic Sling Bag which has this special brace that holds your camera "in the air" away from the sides of your case. Case Logic uses this suspension harness in other designs as well.

I will be taking before and after pictures of homes that have been refurbished and then putting them on my company's website. I'm looking for a digital camera under $400.00. I don't even know where to start! Should I get a point and shoot camera or something else? I know next to nothing about cameras and there are so many options. What should I be looking for?

Answer
First of all, I recommend that you get a DSLR instead of a point and shoot camera. A DSLR camera gives you far more professional photographs as well as you can upgrade you lens for different type of photography. Based on your purpose for a camera, I recommend that you get a camera to shoot professional photos for your website and this is what a DSLR camera will do. Remember, the quality of the pictures on your website will give people a sense of legitimacy.

I realize that you want to spend under $400, unfortunately a DSLR camera with a lens will be slightly over that. I personally recommend hat you get the Canon Rebel T3 camera- it is a very good camera, but what matters most with DSLR camera, is the lens that you have attached.. This camera comes with the 18-55mm IS II Lens which would be perfect for your close up shots of houses. In the future if you want to take other images , eg landscape, portrait etc, you can easily buy another lens for that purpose.. But for now, focus on your primary job to be completed..

This camera is being sold at amazon for $428.99 which i think is an awesome price for such camera.
I implore you to get it.

Is this a good camera? Do they make cameras that get rid of noise?

und_ich_fl

I saw the pentax optio a30 on QVC and was wondering if it would be a good camera for professional photography and stock photography? It didn't say anything about noise reduction but i was wondering if they make cameras that reduce or get rid of noise (digital cameras). What would be the best free program to reduce noise or is their a special trick?

Answer
If you want good digital camera with little noise, then you almost always have to go with Digital SLR. Please see this article

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0705/07052001highiso.asp

Basically to summarize, the SIZE of the CCD (light sensitive device) is the major factor in image noise. And the matter of fact is that almost all P&S cameras use tiny CCD compared to DSLR. Fuji seems to have overcome some problem and few of their P&S cameras are quite good with noise. But remember (lack of) noise is just one factor of what makes a good camera.

There is no magic when it come to getting rid of noise. There is a program called Noise Ninja that seems good but still not as good as using a DSLR (sorry not free).

http://www.picturecode.com/
===
If you want to know a "trick" it is to NOT use high ISO. Stick with the lowest ISO setting and use camera steading devices (bean bags, tripods, etc.).

Answer
I suppose you're asking the lens sizes? That has nothing to do with the camera.

This camera doesn't appear to come with a 35mm lens... as said above, from the photo I'd assume an 18-55 and a 75-300.

Hi, frnd i m so confused. How can i be sure about the quality of a camera(mobile phone). Often i see the resolution is good however the quality is not good. What is mega pixel? Plz explain clearly. Thanks

Answer
For DSLRs and such there are lab tests which rate their sensors, but i wouldn't care that much about the results, especially if those of two cameras are close to each other.

Megapixel say how many individual pixels a photo consists of. MP are not a measure of image quality, but only of image size.

The image quality comes from the skill of the photographer, the quality of the lens, and of the precision of the measurements of each individual pixel. DSLRs use much, much bigger sensors than point and shoot cameras, so each pixel on them gathers much more light than a pixel on a P&S camera. Hence it has more light to work with and thus can take more accurate measurements.

E.g. the Nikon D3s costs $5300 yet it "only" has 12MP and is considered to be one of the finest cameras ever made - but it's 12MP on a huge full frame sensor that gathers lots of light and thus is highly accurate. If the world's best professional sports photographers (who mostly use this camera due to its crazy autofocus system and ability to freeze motion with high ISO) can do with 12MP, what does Joe Average need more for?

In P&S cameras, more MP actually are bad for image quality, as camera manufacturers cram as many pixel into the sensor as they anyhow can, neglecting the quality of each pixel in the process - because they know that showing off with insane MP figures will make people buy the camera, because they mistakenly believe that more MP are always better. That used to be so when cameras only had like 1-2MP, but not anymore. For example, a full HD screen can display only 2MP, any more than that is wasted on it! More MP only becomes relevant for large prints and for cropping, but 10-12MP generally is plenty.

Other P&S cameras that are marketed as compact sidekick cameras for experienced photographers keep the MPs down, e.g. the 10MP Canon S95. It will wipe the floor with any 16MP P&S camera.

Which mobile phones would you recommend as compare to omnia excluding iphone?

DUDER

Hi, I'm into photography, but i'm not really into the whole camera world right now. I was wondering which cameras are good to buy right now? I know Nikon or Canon will do it, but which models. I don't plan to spend more than $1000 dollars on this camera because it's my first one, but i want to be satisfied until it actually brakes or something, what do you guys recommend?

Answer
One thing you're gonna wanna keep in mind is that once you move into professional photography with interchangeable lens systems, most of your money should go towards the glass rather than the body. Obviously starting out it's not as big a consideration, one long-range lens should take care of everything and then maybe a good value portrait lens would be a good idea, but once you get your next camera, you'll want to be able to use the lenses from your previous cameras. In short, do research into the companies, see what areas each excels in, and pick a horse.

Yours is a growing demographic of people who want to move up in photography without breaking the bank, and all of the major manufacturers are responding accordingly. The latest from Canon is the EOS Digital Rebel T1i, which has 15.1 megapixels and shoots HD video, a very new feature to the world of DSLRs. Nikon's offering is the D5000, which I'm not as familiar with since I'm a Canon user (a very satisfied one might I add). Each of these should have enough creative control to satisfy your needs without costing too much. And my advice, to further save on costs, is to buy the camera body only, with no kit lens, and find what's called a "walkaround" lens, since it has enough focal range to cover most needs and doesn't require constant changing of lenses. Make sure it's high quality so that when you move on to your next camera you won't have to replace it because of optical defects that would be more pronounced on higher end cameras. And as I mentioned, you also might want a high value low cost portrait lens. The magic bullet of DSLR users is a 50mm f1.8 lens. High speed, low light capabilities, and usually within $100 (I pciked up my Canon for 80).
Best of luck!

What kind of security camera system should I buy to watch my house from a laptop?

I've heard-of a security camera system that I could watch my home from a laptop while at work. What company should I refer to get this setup, and will any laptop work?

Answer
Hello

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Spytown, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

Answer
I am more of a canon guy but the nikon d60 is an amazing dslr as a first dslr. Playing with the manual settings, you'll learn a lot about photography. Using the automatic features will help aswell. If your really unsure some camera stores allow the users to play with the cameras before you purchase them plus tons of camera stores have a knowledge staff that will show you how to use some of features.

How should I go about selling my DSLR Camera?

Karl K

I'm trying to sell my Sony A-300 DSLR Camera with extra lenses, external flash, cable releases, carrying case, and everything. It's all very nice and new, no problems. I cannot do eBay and Craigslist keeps sending me spam. What should I do?
I am looking to sell everything for about $700

Answer
I think there is a way for you to sell on Amazon and you may want to check that out.

Also, below are 2 links to photo.net, that has a large online photo community and there is a classified area where you can sell equipment. First link goes to the main web page for the site and the 2nd link should take you to the page where there is DSLR sales.

Another option to check is in your coummity, look for local camera clubs and colleges that have photography classes. You can make a flyer and get the info to these groups that could have an interest.

Hope this helps.

How much money should I budget for Ghost Hunting Gear?

Becky

I'm discovering some great online ghost hunting stores. Now I'm wondering what people are budgeting for their ghost hunts? How much money is going to get me a good ghost hunt investigation?

Thanks for the help!

Answer
As Iâm sure youâve realized, this depends what you would like to use to âhunt ghosts.â Of course the answer to that depends greatly on what you would like to get out of âghost hunting.â Alright, so enough answering a question with more questions.

The costs begin with free! Thatâs right, I highly recommend those new to the âghost huntingâ field to utilize what they have around the house. Most people have access to a camera, or camera/phone. Obviously the more you spend the more quality your photograph and any potential anomalous data acquired will have. There are some fairly decent entry level digital cameras for sale today (*2012) for around $100 and up. There are a ton of options you will want to familiarize yourself with first. This goes for cameras or some of the more specific tools you see on the ghost hunting TV shows. Having worked with most of the networks and production companies, I can say that what you see on TV isnât always the best direction to go with your own âghost hunting.â

To get straight to your question (too late):
Infrared Thermometer $15
Infrared Thermometer with PC interface and K-Type Probe $250+ (recommend this one)
Digital Camera $15
Digital Camera with glass lens, Infrared illuminators and high Megapixels $150+ (recommend this one)
3D Digital Camera $200+ (recommend this one)
Single Axis EMF Meter $20
Three Axis Data logging pc interface EMF Meter $300+ (recommend this one)
Dowsing rods $20+

Alright so I could go on, but it would be easier to direct you a site that you could click through the store for free (full disclosureâ¦my website). http://GetGhostGear.com Visit there and find a ton of articles with pictures and âas seen on TVâ equipment (as many TV shows have gotten their equipment from me). Become an informed consumer and check out the HUGE and FREE list of ghost hunting equipment here http://getghostgear.com/gear-list-with-images.html

All you have to do is click on the ghost hunting equipment picture, learn more about it, and then click another link there if you want to purchase it. We donât recommend all of the equipment, just for the record so if you want our advice, read the articles first! Iâll include a bio about myself and my background so you know where your information is here is coming from (even if you don't shop from us, know who you are shopping with).

Hope this helps, and start saving those pennies. Get out in the field (safely) first and see what you think you need from there!

i need the phone that has a good camera. i hate the lumia because it has a 3inch camera in the back. but it fels so heavy a 41 megapixel camera at 173 grams. i friends at work say to get the iphone 5s or 5c and at home they say get the s4. i need a phone for business i am ceo of 5 guys burgers and fries. i need a verygood camera.. and a phone for gaming, tell me which phone to get.. 20 points to a good answer

Answer
S4: Productivity wise the S4 is superior with true multitasking capability. You are also able to open two different applications at the same time on one screen, eg. Gmail and Internet browser. It has a larger screen which makes reading documents and PDF's on the go a lot easier. The S4 also has a memory card slot that can be used to store additional data that will not be lost when and if you have to reformat your phone. Data can be very important to business users and you may not always have a large mobile data bundle to sync your data to online servers. The camera of the S4 has a 13MP sensor so you will be able to take higher resolution images. The Android OS is far more versatile than the iOS 7, however this only matters if you actually use a smartphone and test its capability, it will not matter for users who only require basic web browser, camera and call/message functionality. You also have access to the battery which means you can purchase a second battery and keep it charged and swap it over when your current battery starts to go flat.

iPhone 5S: The iPhone 5S is arguably more aesthetically pleasing and provides you a brand name phone. The build quality is better and it looks more expensive. People are also widely aware that the price point of the iPhone is higher than that of the S4 which makes it a status symbol of sorts..until you meet someone with a Vertu. :P The dimensions of the iPhone are smaller than that of the S4 and are more suitable for users who prefer a more compact but current smartphone. It is also 18 grams lighter which may be a factor.

These are some of the factors to consider, refer to the sources I have listed below for more information. I would personally go for the S4 as it suits my needs better. Don't listen to the fanboys(both Android and Apple) who simply assert one is much better than the other. They are both comparable and have their merits and demerits.

Good luck!

Should i get the HTC one or the the Samsung galaxy s 4?

Joe

I'm getting a new smartphone in a month and I am really interested in these two phones. I've watched countless reviews and they each tend to have ups and downs, but neither really stands out. I love the look of the HTC one but I really want a good camera and I'm intimidated by only "4 ultrapixel" opposed to a 13 megapixel camera on the gs4. I'm also a little concerned about them fitting in my pocket, but it's not really one of my biggest worries. Any personal opinions? And don't say iPhone 5 because there is nothing special about the current iPhone, at least nothing that appeals to me.so what do you think? Or should I wait for the next iphone?

Answer
I traded my iPhone 5 for a Galaxy 4S and its been the best cell phone decision I've made. S4 has a big screen, better screen resolution, a battery you can remove (spare batteries on Amazon are about $10), and expandable memory. The iPhone's Bluetooth didn't connect to any of my friend's phones in India for reasons unknown. We couldn't trade photos. They all had Samsung phones. The S4 feels better in my pocket because the corners are not so pointy.

Ralf

The new ipad 2 has two cameras. How many megapixels on each? Apple does not have this information on the tech specs. Anyone know?

Answer
Both cameras are capable of still photos and video recording. Back camera is capable of 5x digital zoom. Front camera is VGA still photo and video recording and the back camera is HD video recording and (presumably) VGA still photos. Both are 30 frames per second. Apple didn't say anything about mega pixels, though it should on par with the ipod touch 4g. Take this with a grain of salt because i don't know for sure.

EDIT: just read the description again. you probably already knew all that stuff. Just assume it's the same quality of the ipod touch 4g

The DSLR cameras look really nice, but I'm not sure what to look for there's so many different qualities and brand names.

Answer
I would get a point and shoot. I have a decent one that I take some good pictures with. As for DSLR cameras though, there's a lot to choose from. Pick one you think looks good, or that you like, and look at all the modes it has. There's some good ones at Walmart :P Fujifilm is cooll.

What is the best possible digital camera on the market now in the range of 99.99 - 199.99?

Simba

I'm looking for features similar to that of the DSLR camera.
I want great focus, video capability, great resolution, good zoom, and advanced performance.
Also, which is best of these two choices that I've looked into:
samsung s850 ( http://www.samsungcamerausa.com/product/product_detail.asp?pid=242&category=19 )
or
canon powershot a630 ( http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=14108 )

i think the canon has more settings to play with BUT the samsung's movie function is impeccable!

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Before I opened your question, I was already thinking "Canon A630" and I see you are too. Here's my standard answer for the question about the best camera under $200:

I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon Powershot A630 or A640 for myself. These cameras have the larger sensor (1/1.8" or 5.2 mm x 7.2 mm) that is nearly double the sensor size you find in many point and shoot cameras and this translates into better image quality. They allow fully automatic use or total user control and offer several stages in between. The only significant difference between these cameras is that the A630 is 8 MP and the A640 is 10 MP.

If you're going to spend up to $200, look at a Canon Powershot A630. My son has had his A620 for over a year (May 2006) and we both like it. My brother has had his A630 for over a year and it's a very nice camera, also. You can get it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $184.

If you can go to $300, look at the 10 MP Canon Powershot A640. This is an excellent camera. It sells for $260 and you can add a very nice memory card for under $40. The images from the A640 compare VERY favorably with the images from a Canon G7, which costs about twice as much.

For either camera, buy a 1 or 2 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. The Ultra II would be excellent, but if you are really into video, you might prefer the faster Extreme III. These cards cost from about $25-45 at B&H and several other outlets.

What cingular phone is the best in your opinion?

Shanequa

I have cingular. And i need a new phone. Just wanting the opinion of anyone who has a cingular phone that they really like and why?

Answer
I just answered another question like this, so we'll do it again!

First off it depends on the kind of phone you want. So lets start simple.

If you're only interested in the basics i would probably suggest the nokia 6126. Very simple basic flip phone that has a button on the side to auto-open. Kinda cool. It does have bluetooth and will hold a microSD up to 2 gig. Also it does have a basic vga camera, and you can use the music on your card as ringtones.

If you want a little more, i'd say check out the Samsung A517 (Lion) nice sporty flip phone, all the stats that the nokia has, but its got a 1.3 mega pixel camera.

For the slider style phone, i'd recommend the Sony w580. Cool slide phone comes in multiple colors and comes with everything in the box, headphones, memory card and everything. Bearing a 2 MP camera with zoom and video capabilities, its something a little different.

Lets get into the big boys now.

If you want something with a, "my phone does everything" style, check these out.

First off, HTC Tilt is a new pocket pc (PPC) that is armed to the teeth. Full touch screen running windows mobile 6, its equipped with word mobile, excel mobile, powerpoint moble internet explorer 7, windows media player 10, a full slide out QWERTY keyboard, and the ability to do just about every cool thing you can think of. Its extremely flexible, and everything can be customized on it. Neat little things about this one include a full 3 megapixel camera, ability to store a 4gig microSD card, and the coolest thing ever, a full tilting screen so you can really use it like a laptop. Quite possibly one of the coolest phones i've ever seen. Oh, did i mention it has Wi-Fi? Yeah, thats right... Wi-Fi...

Of course if you're not quite wanting to go that far you can do something like the Blackjack. Not quite as powerful as the Tilt, it still has the Windows Mobile 5 OS, and works pretty good. This one is more of a blackberry style phone with the full keyboard on the front. It does take advantage of a click wheel on the side of the phone to make navigation easier. 1.3 megapixel camera and a memory card capacity of 2 gig make this phone a good first PDA phone.

I'll end on the newest addition of Smartphones (PPC and regular phone combined). The Pantech Duo. The Duo supplies you with a Dual-Slide, Dual-Keyboard Windows Mobile 6 all out assult. I cant even begin to get into what all this one can do so i'll say go to www.phonescoop.com and find it. You really do have to see this one for yourself.

Hope this helps you out!

How can a smart phone have the same mp as a dslr?

How is it possible that a phone can have 13mp to 30mp and I've heard rumors of a 41mp phone yet they are so small and not as expensive as a dslr? How is it possible? I'm so confused

Answer
If you make the individual pixels small enough, you can stuff, and stuff, and stuff pixels into a tiny sensor as the ones that smart phones have and come up with a 41 megapixel camera.

And that is the problem.

The smaller the pixels are, the poorer the low light characteristics are, along with dynamic range and color definition.

These days, the number of pixels is nothing more than marketing gimmickry, designed to lure buyers to a camera believing they have something they do not.

DSLRs on the other hand, have sensors 150 times larger than the typical phone camera, and produce superior photos simply because the individual pixels are larger.

This tells you that the number of pixels a camera contains these days is not an indicator of the camera's quality.

However, the reverse indicator is more true - cameras having too many pixels is an indicator of a low quality camera.

What phone have you heard of that has the highest megapixels?

I used a Nikon Coolpix L110 digital camera in macro mode. It's a 12.1 megapixel camera with 15x zoom. I was wondering how large I would be able to get a print of this photo with crisp resloution. What's the biggest print I could get?

Answer
If the image is tack sharp and shows NO blur caused by camera movement (and assuming your camera is set to its highest resolution) you should easily be able to make an 11x14 inch print.

However to know for sure, you need to take your image file to the lab and they will be able to tell you straight away what the largest enlargement can be

I'm getting a new digital camera. I'm 14, a girl, and the budget is not an issue. What's the best digital camera in your opinion? Is the Sony tx1 or the Samsung 12.2 megapixel camera (the one with the screen on the front) any good? Most descriptive and helpful answer gets the points. Please and thank you. (:

Answer
At least 10 - 30 times a day someone on YA asks: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
A quick search would have given you hundreds of replies, but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

However, if you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixelsâ¦. there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX20 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19208

I own a canon rebel and am pretty use to handling an slr camera. I've been getting more serious with photography and would like to know, if I am taking pictures outdoors of a person (or even a few more) What would be the best settings/mode for my camera? Also, in other places such as indoors and where can I find a guide/tutorial that'll show me how to control my settings according the the setting I'm in?

p.s Another quick question I have, what would be a great portrait lens between $50-200 for the canon rebel?

thanks !
* I have read books and have done classes in photography involving ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed and Lighting. I know how to work with a camera indoors. All I am asking is if someone had a GOOD tutorial that goes over the recommended settings for my specific camera type, and what would be the best RECOMMENDED lens. Nothing ele.

Answer
Have you tried the library or bookshops.
They tend to stock books on basic photography which will go some way to teaching you how to actually use your camera in different circumstances.

There are NO "best" settings. It is all dependent on the conditions at the time you take the image and that is constantly changing.

If you are "getting more serious" then do yourself a big favour and actually learn properly about exposure and your specific camera.

Learning does not mean coming on here asking basic questions, it means sitting down with a book or a tutor and actually reading and digesting the information and then going out and practising.

Recommendations for a wide-lens-camera around $500?

My friend wants a camera around the price of $500 for landscape photos. I know that for landscape it's best to have wide-lens camera.

"something good for landscape photos"

"I'm hoping for something around $500, but I'm more concerned with quality. I want something that will take beautiful photos, but it doesn't have to be too fancy since I'm not a photographer."

Review: Outstanding Starter Camera

Looking over several cameras and choosing one for someone who has outgrown point and shoots, I came back to the Nikon D3000. By no means will this model blow away the seasoned photographer, however it does cover the basics and more. We picked it up and tried it out over the weekend.

First time DSLR users will enjoy the Guide Mode. It literally walked us through different shoot scenarios via the fixed 3" LCD screen. An excellent tool, its step by step instructions allowed my niece to move from the operating booklet in no time. After a few more runs, I am sure that she will feel quite comfortable shooting in the manual mode. The quick shutter release was a nice surprise.

Upon completing two days of shooting with the Nikon D3000, I walked away impressed. In manual mode, indoor shots were a balanced and perfect mix of shadow and color. As usual with shooting in low light, noise will make an appearance. However this system can be tweaked to deliver some outstanding indoor photographs. The bottom line is proper settings.

A basic fix is the VR (Vibration Reduction) feature located on the lens. This should be activated, especially indoors. A tripod will certainly help. In auto mode, just set the camera to night portrait and sit back and enjoy the rest of your flight.

Outdoor shots were vibrant, sharp and rich in color without editing. The onboard flash system was more than capable in meeting fill flash requirements. Without a doubt the overall performance of the camera, features and image quality is excellent.

With 10.2 megapixels to work with, I easily blew up a personal favorite my niece had taken to 16" x 20". Even though I don't see myself trading in my Nikon D300 for this model anytime soon, this camera is by far an upgrade over any of the souped up point and shoots out there.

Its easy to see that the real jewel in this model is the auto focus system. With six auto mode settings (Landscape, Sports, Child, Closeups, Portrait, and Night Portrait) each and every photograph can be a keeper. Onboard editing tweakers won't be disappointed with this model. It covers the basics. The D3000 operates with both SD & SDHC cards.

The Nikon D3000 is paired with a Nikkor 18-55mm AF-S DX lens. It will operate with any Nikkor DX and AF-S lens. Older Nikkor or similar AF lens is a no go when shooting in auto but will function in manual mode. Since this model is not fitted with the built in optical image stabilizer, I recommend switching on the Vibration Reduction (VR) feature located on the lens. Still the best anti vibration tool is a tripod.

I want the coolest features on the dslr camera in the market. I know much about canon Camera's.i don't really know much about nikon Camera's or there. So pls tell me what camera out there has at least 16 to 24 mega pixels and lens from 70 to 200 or 300 mml.

No crappy fijifilm or and crappy names I never heard of.

Answer
Yes you may think you know about Canon cameras, but it is clear you do not.

To answer your question, the Nikon D3200 and Canon 1100D/T3 are the least expensive dSLR's right now.

However, you seem to be fixated on the number of pixels on their sensors. That is not necessarily the first criteria to consider. Sensor performance is most important.

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/(appareil1)/801%7C0/(brand)/Nikon/(appareil2)/693%7C0/(brand2)/Canon

More on pixels.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

Now as far as a lens that is 70-200 mm it will cost you an additional $2,400 and a 70-300 mm, $590

Just the lenses alone will break your budget.

You need to spend some time on the Nikon and Canon websites looking at the cost of the inexpensive entry level cameras and the cost of various lenses.

If you don't know about the field of view of the various focal lengths, you can visit this site

http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/simulator/index.htm

Once you have done your independent research, you need to visit a proper camera shop and look a the cameras and lenses for yourself.

How to chose the best dslr camera?

Ryan

I am looking for a nikon dslr but I don't know which camera is best for me.

I am new to photography and I like to shoot stuff close (autofocus) and shoot objects with low shutter speeds

Is a dslr camera with an autofocus motor better? If so which one is the best?

Answer
Any of the entry level DSLR's would be fine. Canon or Nikon are both good - it depends on your preferences, or perhaps if someone you know owns the same brand.

The lenses are much more important, because they will stay with you even when you upgrade to a new camera body, so make sure to buy the best you possibly can when it comes to lens shopping - you WILL regret buying slow lenses.

Canon tends to be a little cheaper and have a bit more choice, including on the second hand market.

Pick a favorite few cameras, compare them on www.dpreview.com, then play with them in a store...... handling them might help you decide which one to get.

The very best thing you can do for your photography, is to attend a class and read a few books and tutorials. Having some knowledge will make a huge difference to your images.
I hope I have expressed this idea clearly enough: YOU need to learn about photography because even the world's best camera will take lousy shots in the hands of someone who has no clue how to use it.

It sounds like you need to start that learning process BEFORE you even go shopping. Don't spend money until you understand all the terms and concepts properly - you'll just end up disappointed with your choices later.
