Answer
i personally prefer Sony DSC-W330 14.1MP Digital Camera which is really good.

*26mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with 4x optical zoom
*14.1-megapixel CCD sensor and 3.0-inch LCD screen (230k pixels)
*SteadyShot Image Stabilization reduces blur; iAuto mode automatically optimizes camera settings
*Smile Shutter technology automatically captures a smile
*Card slot for optional Memory Stick Duo media and SD media

Camera that doesn't take noisy/grainy pictures?

Aurora

I'm looking for a camera that is no more than $100. My current camera takes grainy/noisy pictures. It's very noticeable when you view them at 100% on my computer screen. They look low-quality. I want a new camera that takes nice-looking, sharp, accurate pictures.

(Maybe it's not my camera, but the way I take the pictures? Any thoughts on this?)

I'll mainly be using it for portraits.
Possibly landscapes, flowers, or macro.

This is the current camera I own: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Panasonic/panasonic_dmclz5.asp

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.

Answer
To make the statements that noise is very common in P&S cameras because they have very tiny sensors and the race for more mega pixels leads to too much of a good thing are simply false as a generalization. These are statements which people have heard for years and they simply keep repeating. Where would they blanketly feel quality begins? A bridge camera sensor? APS-C DSLR sensor? Full frame DSLR-sensor? Maybe we should abandon all those and shoot only medium format sensors.

Those making these statements havent kept up with digital technology. No manufacturer simply wants to cram in more mega pixels. They do research, engineering and testing to develop sensors which can utilize the extra pixels. Here are two articles from DXO Labs (a respected testing lab) to help dispel the myth that P&S cameras cant take great photos and that too high of a resolution is always bad

âContrary to conventional wisdom, higher resolution actually compensates for noiseâ

âAre top compact cameras catching up with DSLRs?â
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/DxOMark-Sensor/DxOMark-reviews/DxOMark-review-for-advanced-compacts

First of all images from many cameras including DSLRs wont look good on your computer screen viewed at full size. The hi-res image is captured at low pixel density typically 72ppi. A 6mp image is roughly 3000 x 2000 pixels. Full size thatâs roughly
42â x 28â. If you printed a 42 x 28 at 72ppi from any camera it wouldnât look great on your wall viewed from a foot away. Normally large images are viewed from a distance. Step back from your monitor 6 or 8 feet and see what it looks like.

Although blanket statements arent valid there are many factors which cause noise. Not every sensor in any type of camera is great. In camera processing varies. Using high ISO increases noise. Low light images and long exposures contribute. The lens has nothing to do with noise at all.

Unfortunately reviews show your particular camera was not a stellar performer.
âShots at ISO 80 and 100 are tolerable, but at ISO 200, images start to show noticeable noise and softness. ISO 400 shots have excessive noise as well as image problems such as softness, lower contrast, and color shift. Extended ISO settings of 800 and 1,600 are available, but noise above ISO 400 makes them all but unusable.â
âNote the combination of image noise and compression artifacts, even at the lowest setting of ISO 80, resulting in the yellow splotches in the book.â
âTHE GOOD: Optical image stabilization; long-range, relatively fast lens; lots of handy features.
THE BAD: Mediocre performance; cheap build quality; some problems with image quality.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Poor low-light performance hinders the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5's useful features.â

Im not one who insists a camera has to cost a fortune to get great photos but with an absolute max of $100 I hope youre not expecting much better than what you have. Its certainly going to have a low cost likely low performance sensor and not much processing performance to reduce noise. There are reasons even point n shoots donât all cost the same.

Take a look at the Casio Exilim Z33
âBottom Line - The Casio Exilim Z33 is one of the most affordable entry-level digicams on the market. Featuring a 10-Megapixel imaging sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, face detection and a One Touch video record button, it definitely doesn't fall short on features. Sporting Easy, Auto and numerous "Scene" modes, it is easy for anyone, no matter how much photography experience they have, to grab this camera and start shooting. For an entry-level camera, the image quality is very good, but the performance is a little slow.â

$84 at WalMart
