I just got my new dslr camera and i want to know about different fun things to do with it.
Like "painting with light" for instance where you change the aperture and exposure.
What other fun tricks and tips are there?

Answer
You could make a stop motion video, if you like the light painting you could make stencils for it, try some HDR photography (requires photoshop), experiment with different settings, or do some product shots in a home made light box!

These are all things I did when I got my first dslr, they're very fun. Some are pretty challenging but don't give up. They're very fun. Except sometime, HDR which can be very frustrating at times.

How to make a camera battery last longer?

So, im going on a trip, and each night i will charge my digital camera battery for the next day. Any tips/tricks i can do to keep my camera from dying in the middle of the day? Does turning it off and on everytime you take a picture save the power or lose more power? because i did that before thinking it would help, but i didn't know if it did anything or not.

Answer
I would recommend all three.

Do not use live view - the screen eats a lot of power. If it's a dslr always use the view finder, it's the best way anyhow because you are seeing what the lens is seeing - always... even when the camera is turned off.

I shoot a few shots and shut down - always. My camera has an automatic 2-minute with no activity shut down but that 2-minutes eats extra battery power.

You can also lower your screen's brightness, that will help... not a lot perhaps but it will help some.

Those are the only things you can do except buying a higher power battery. Most dslr batteries are about 800 mAp. You can buy batteries that are 1500 mAp and they will last longer than the 800.

However, in my experience, these are off brand batteries, cheaply made and I had problems with mine swelling and then not fitting in the slot... so it's a trade off. The off brand batteries may last
just over a year but they do run the camera for more shots and video than the standard size.

That's your call. Good Luck.

One more thought... pick up a couple of extra batteries and a second charger. I always carry
4 batteries in my bag along with two chargers. I have yet to run out of power on any given day.
