Hi, Fixed, I'd recommend something for half the price of iPad but that'll give you all that you need from a tablet - portability, apps, music, video, and a great screen. It's Nook Color from Barnes & Noble that is the best value of the current tablet market at $250. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it's a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and thus it better performs in sunlight producing less glare while reading on iPad in painful. The screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles. You can get two Nook Color's for the price of one iPad. Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) and hundreds of other apps are available for download. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends. When you walk in with the Nook to Barnes & Noble store, youâre allowed to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. Nooks have USB port and microSD card slot. Nook store has over 2 million of paid books and about the same number of free public domain books. You can buy Nookâs at Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Millon, Walmart, BestBuy, Staples, OfficeMax, Fred Mayer, P.C. Richard, Radio Shack, etc. stores and web sites.
Nook Color supports:
EPUB (including Non or Adobe DRM)
PDF
Other documents: XLS, DOC, PPT, PPS, TXT, DOCM, XLSM, PPTM, PPSX, PPSM, DOCX, XLX, PPTX
Graphics: JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP
Audio: MP3, MP4, AAC
Video: MP4

How can Hollywood cameras be compared to HD 1080p Handhelds?

Is it true that they have never been closer in terms of video Quality? I mean I can buy a 1080P camera at Walmart that literally shoots in HD. Same res as the Movies in the theaters and TV shows are shot in.

Answer
not, the movies shown in theaters are either motion picture film or 4k video. 4k video has 4096 scanning lines, not 1080 like a consumer camera. Hollywood uses 4k and film interchangeably. SGI special effects are rendered in 4k video.

HDTV is 1080i not 1080p. plus primetime entertainment shows are still shot on 35mm motion picture film and rarely on video. you might say they are "movies made for television". Even Blu-ray is not made from 1080 cameras, it is scanned from film or interpolated from 4k video.

it is true that a few European "art films" were created with dSLR cameras, but you won't see them in Hollywood. one reason is that theatrical widescreen requires a wider frame than 16:9 of consumer HD. the main problem of consumer HD is the compression codecs used including blu-ray. the way they achieve super high compression is to throw out 7 of each 8 frames. the effective frame rate is 4 FPS, on playback the missing frames are interpolated which is why motion sucks.

another problem with dSLR cameras is the CCD uses a Beyer filter to get pseudo random color pixels. video is not random, it is scanned line by line and needs color on every scan. thus color from dSLRs is poor resolution compared to 3 CCD professional video cameras.

if you think dSLR is close in quality to Hollywood films, you might want to get an eye exam.
