Answer
If you get lucky, you might manage to find a DSLR at Circuit City today-Sunday-for $400 or less. Today is supposed to be the last day and then they will all close their doors forever.

Anyway, I heard that they are selling the Sony a350-14MP with live view and an articulated LCD-for $375. You could get lucky and find that they have one. Go to your local Circuit City first thing in the morning and see what you can find. I don't know what the other brands are going for. You will have to go in and check and ask the staff if there is anything in the back as well.

If that doesn't pan out-and I wouldn't expect too much, just hope for the best-then there are more options.

You should check craigslist. I don't know where you are or I would do a check for you. But you can always find used DSLRs-usually with lenses-for at or less than $400.

It looks like from B&H (very respected dealer) the only brand DSLR you can get for less than $400 is Olympus. Olympus makes DSLRs every bit as good as Nikon or Canon. They use the four thirds system which if I have this correct uses a smaller sensor than Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony. That would be the drawback in going with Olympus.

If you could get together another $150 you could get either a Nikon D40 (6MP) with the 18-55mm kit lens, or you could get the Canon Rebel XS (10MP) with the 18-55mm kit lens, or you could get the Sony a200 (10.2MP) with the 18-70mm kit lens for $499-your choice. The extra $50 you will need to at least buy a memory card and a holster style camera case would be nice to protect your investment. None of the other brands have any DSLR models near your price range.

If you might be interested in a refurbished camera, Adorama has several at decent prices. Refurbished means that they cleaned and checked the camera and fixed any problems so it should look and work like new.

Adorama is also a very respected dealer and I would not hesitate to buy a used item from them. They have a Canon Rebel XTI camera body for $319. You can get a used lens from adorama too and probably a 2GB memory card for the remainder of $81.

B&H also has a used department and I would buy a used item from them as well. They have a D40 and a D70 for $249 each. And a Canon 300D Rebel for $249. Any of these three would be good beginner cameras and would leave you with $151 to buy a used lens, a camera case and a memory card. They have a used Canon Rebel XTI for $369. Remember that these don't come with lenses. you will have to find a used lens that you can afford to start with if you buy any of these.

For used lenses,

If you are willing to be humble at this point and buy used you will have your foot in the door. Then you can begin purchasing lenses to go with the camera and when you have the money you can also upgrade to a new body.

what camera bag should i get if i have the canon rebel xs SLR camera?

Answer
I think there are two ways for you to go considering what I hear from you.

*A. One is to get a bag that basically just holds your camera with the lens and a bit of space to hold and extra battery and memory cards.

A bag that is some size bigger and can hold the camera and more. It does not have to much bigger than Option A, maybe enough extra space to carry a second lens.

I have provided a number of links below, some are to three known name camera bag makers and some are to vendors to see prices and other brands.

Here are my recommendations to look at for each option:

Option A: There are 2 to consider here and they are very similar.

***Tamrac 5514 Adventure Zoom 4 Holster Bag - designed to hold DSLR or Film SLR with a Zoom Lens up to 3.5" Long Attached. This option is trying to keep more compact and carry as little as possible, there is one external front pocket. Estimated cost $23

and the

***Tamrac 5515 Adventure Zoom 5 designed to hold DSLR or Film SLR with a Zoom Lens up to 4.5" Long (this model has 2 extra outside side pockets along with the external front pocket).
Estimated cost $25

Option B:

***Lowepro Nova 160 AW Shoulder Bag - can carry one or two extra lens. More space than the options above but a bit bigger. Estimated cost is $45.

I really like the Tamrac I listed in first more compact options, they are somewhat triangle in shape, holding the camera lens pointed downward. Other brands make this sort of case but Tamrac offers a good variety of sizes, a carry handle as well as the shoulder strap, and a short strap latch to keep the bag closed as well has being able to zipper it closed. I also like how the when it is closed the top is designed to overlap the zipper.

I know this is this is a long post, but a camera bag is very important, it protects the camera which is not a cheap investment.

The vendor are pretty easy to search and research.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
