I am buying it for a trip to Africa and for use on other holidays and for family shots. I am new to photography but want a camera that takes good quality photos in both light and dark conditions, takes photos fast, turns on fast, changes modes fast and is not too hard to use.
Let me know what you think! Thanks

Answer
Good question.
I have a DSLR & a Lumix

I have the earlier version, TZ10, with a Lowepro case hanging from a carabiner from the shoulder strap on my daypack. The point being , it has excellent utility as a travel camera in rough conditions when you cant always keep the DSLR open & ready.

A few things with the TZ range :

- chose the best maximum ISO by trying under a range of low light conditions (I dont shoot above ISO400 as the quality drops off severely). Seriously consider a good lightweight travel tripod
- shoot at high resolution (so make sure you buy plenty of memory)
- I use the flash a lot in daylight - make sure you have spare battery
- learn how to de activate the GPS - it drains batteries really quickly so only turn it on when you really need it
- image quality drops off at either end of zoom range - a cropped high resolution image will look better than one taken at maximum zoom

The DSLR gives you serious improvement in image quality , quick focusing, tracking etc (as you already know). If you are new to photography, perhaps get a superseded TZ (I buy from here http://www.citiwideonline.com/au/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=33&keyword=&manufacturer_id=0&Itemid=79&orderby=product_name&limit=50&limitstart=50) and as your experience & knowledge improves use the saved money for a DSLR & good lens.

What is a good entry level DSLR camera that is $500 or under?
