What is your opinion on the Olympus E-420 DSLR Camera with 14-42mm lens?

I'm thinking of buying my first SLR camera, and I'm pretty much a novice at photography. It's really just a hobby of mine alongside my music and public speaking.

This is what I have an idea of liking:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-E-420-DSLR-Camera-14-42mm/dp/B0015IOB0Q/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240860104&sr=1-16

I'd like a simple, small camera for carrying around with me. My budget is £300.00.

I currently have a JVC Everio GZ-MG330R camcorder, which I use for photography at the moment, but the picture quality isn't great, and I use it for short film creations.

This is it:

If you have any other suggestions, then feel free.
Spam will be reported. :)

Have a lovely day.

The Olympus is the smallest and lightest of the DSLR's. So if your looking for small it is your best choice. It is not much bigger that many bridge cameras.

The downsides of the Olympus is that it has the smallest sensor of all the DSLR's. It is still much bigger than any point and shoot but it is a good amount smaller than other DSLR's. The other downside is that the Olympus uses a 4:3 aspect ratio rather than the standard 3:2 of 35mm film and all other DSLR's. This means that like a point and shoot all 4x6 prints need to be cropped. The 3:2 aspect ratio matches perfectly with a 4x6 print so there is no cropping. There are also not as many lenses available for the Olympus as there are from Nikon and Canon.

If you are looking for a small lightweight camera it is a great choice but in my opinion anyways you are trading size and weight for a less flexible system.

What is a dslr camera?

Turn my sw

I have no knowledge of photography. So what is it?
What do the lenses have to do with it?
What makes a better quality photo?
What are sensors?
What is auto focus?
What is optical view finder?
What is lens mounts?
What else do I need to know about a dslr?

Answer
SLR stands for single lens reflex, which is basically how the camera functions. Some of the older film cameras you see in movies, on teleevision- are SLRs. A dSLR is simply a digital SLR camera. In general, your photographs will have much better quality than with basic or mid-level point and shoot cameras, and even then, only very few advanced point and shoot cameras can match the output of a dSLR.

Lenses are what it's all about. Ever heard of swapping lenses on a $100 point-and-shoot? No. Because you can't. With a dSLR, you have virtually unlimited zoom- of course depending on the lenses you have.

DSLRs make for better photo quality because they have image sensors which are much better than those of cheaper types, and generally, they will have a larger megapixel count as well.

Sensors are basically digital screens which an image is captured on- an image- in the form of light- will pass through the camera's lens, and is then captured on a sensor.

Auto-focus is a newer feature on cameras that allow you to simply press the shutter-release button half-way, and the camera automatically focuses for you. If you don't have AF, focusing your lens manually can take anywhere from half a second to nearly half a minute.

And optical viewfinder allows you to see EXACTLY what the camera will capture. No more digital screens that are sluggish and misrepresent colors.

Lens mounts are what allow you to attach lenses to your camera. You needn't worry about them, for the most part, unless you're trying to attach a very old lens to a very new camera.

You also need to know that a dSLR is a touch more expensive than a P&S, but the trade-off here is that dSLRs have unsurpassed quality- a workhorse, in comparison to a point-and-shoot. DSLRs are usually quite cumbersome, so if you're looking for something you can put in your purse or your backpack, you may want to stick with a point-and-shoot. Generally, only people serious about photography will purchase a dSLR, as it takes a little getting used to, and a handful of cash.
