Cleaning DSLR camera + possible damage? (Canon Rebel T2i)?

Q. I have a Canon Rebel T2i which might have been damaged...

I was taking pictures out in the light rain and got some water droplets on my lens. I didn't have anything to wipe it down with and not wanting to scratch the lens I just put the lens cap back on it and put it back in my bag...this was a week ago... So, could there be moisture inside the lens and if so can it cause permanent damage? How much would it cost to fix?

Also, I stupidly trusted someone who has a DSLR camera themselves and let them clean my camera... The person used a air brush/ regular brush to clean the mirror inside which now looks like there's makeup all over the lens (from the view finder). If the mirror is slightly scratched, who'd it be noticeable in pictures I take or not? How much would it cost to get the mirror replaced, e.g? I have no insurance on the camera. I'm a beginner in handling DSLR cameras...please help!

Answer
First, you really shouldn't be using your camera and lens in the rain. They aren't weather sealed so if the camera and lens actually got wet there is the potential for problems. A few water droplets on the front element of the lens shouldn't cause any problems but you should buy a lens cleaning cloth to clean the lens with and a UV filter to use to protect the front element of the lens.

Any dust or scratches on the mirror won't affect your image quality because when you press the shutter release the mirror swings up and out of the light path so the light coming through the lens can expose the sensor. However, if there is a haze on the mirror it can make it difficult to compose your pictures so it may need replacing.

In the Owner's Manual for your camera there is a section on "Care and Cleaning" of your camera. Had you read it you would have seen a warning worded something like this: "WARNING! Do not touch the mirror inside the camera with anything. It is a front-surface mirror and easily damaged."

Also in the back of the Owner's Manual you should find a listing of Canon Authorized Service Centers with phone numbers and addresses. Call one of them and ask how much it will cost to replace the mirror. Ask your "friend" to pay half the cost and don't ever let him near your camera again.

Recommend a good DSLR camera?

Q. I am just starting out in photography. Could someone recommend a good DSLR that is not too expensive? I have a digital point and shoot, but would rather have more control of the camera. Any recommendations?

Answer
Cool. I have not had a chance to post this answer for about a month and it's perfect for you.

The Nikon D40 is a great little camera, very easy to use and quite reasonably priced. It's now under $500 with a lens. It has a few "consumer friendly" totally automatic modes that make it very easy to use, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. It will get you in the Nikon family which is a great place to be. If you buy accessories and lenses, you will be able to use everything on any Nikon that you might upgrade to later on. The user manual is among the easiest to use, also, including three pages of "frequently asked questions" that could put Yahoo! Answers out of business.

Check out Nikon's "Picturetown" promotion, where they handed out 200 D40's in Georgetown, SC. http://www.stunningnikon.com/picturetown/

Here are a few reviews, in case you have not read them yet. Be sure to note that they are several pages long and some of the reviews also have some sample images that you can look at.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/nikon_d40.html
http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3756/camera-test-nikon-d40.html
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/d40-recommendations.htm

I hate to see people slam the camera because it can't autofocus with older Nikon lenses. It is true that there is a "slight problem" with older Nikon lenses not autofocusing on the D40, but if you do not own a bag full of older lenses, it is not going to be a problem. It is barely a problem anyhow. If you check www.nikonusa.com for "AF-S" lenses, which are ALL 100% compatible with the D40, you will find 28 lenses, including 13 "VR" (vibration Reduction) lenses and one true macro lens with "VR". There are another 25-plus lenses in the current catalog that provide all functions except autofocus as well as many (possibly dozens) "out of print" lenses that will work just as well. In addition, although these lens will not autofocus, most of them will still give focus confirmation. From the D40 manual: "If the lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 of faster, the viewfinder focus indicator can be used to confirm whether the portion of the subject in the selected focus area is in focus. After positioning the subject in the active focus area, press the shutter release button halfway and rotate the lens focusing ring until the in-focus indicator is displayed." (See http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/nikonafs.txt for a list of AF-S lenses or see http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=16715&forum=DCForumID201 for even more...)

The D40 only has 3 autofocus zones arranged horizontally at the center, 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. This might be considered a limitation, but realistically, most people will find this perfectly adequate, especially if you are moving up from a point and shoot with only a center zone.

There is no "Status LCD" on top of the camera, but Nikon chose to use the rear LCD for this information. This is actually a nice move, as the display is bigger than the top display and you aren't using the read LCD for anything BEFORE you take the picture anyway. This is not a step backwards and it actually makes sense to me.

You can get the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens at B&H Photo available through Yahoo! Shopping or at 1-800-622-4987) for $475 (December 2007). Add a Lexar Platinum (60X speed) card for $25 or 2 GB for $35. Or - get the D40 with 18-135 lens and 1 GB Lexar card for around $700. This is a decent lens and it is very versatile. You will find it suitable for pretty much anything you want to do, other than really long telephoto shots. It will let you explore the range of focal lengths to decide where to start filling in your lens collection. If you don't want to buy any more lenses, this one will carry you through pretty much everything. B&H also have used D40's with the lens from $419.

which is the best camera/deal? or any other suggestions?
please no point and shoots ._.

Answer
There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say, but digital is definitely the way to go. I think the following information will be very helpful.

What gives a camera its picture quality?

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...

Lots of great camera tips in these two links. http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

Check this camera. FUJIFILM - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital. This is more camera for the money.
Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. Life time Warranty (Parts & Labor). You may be able to find it on the Internet for a lower price ($144), but be careful of the vendor.

This could be the best slim line camera. It's PINK!

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. You may be able to view the owners manual at this link. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

Looking for a good set of surveillance camera system?

Kevin G

Hi, im looking for a good set of surveillance camera, thats also fair priced. The cameras will be installed in a store. One of the cameras will be aiming at the cash register, so i want it to be clear enough to see the cash thats being hand out. I also want it be to able to connect to a PC, and works on a network. I like to keep an eye on the store when im at home.
Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hi, a great system to use with the PC & Network you have already is BiKal EyeSoft IP Camera Software. It will work with analogue, network IP, HD MegaPixel and USB cameras from many different manufacturers.

Simply install the software. Then connect the network cameras, these can be wireless too. Enter the password in the software and that's it. You can download a free trial from their website http://www.bikal.co.uk/network-surveillance/ip-software.html.

The cheapest & easiest solution is to simply buy 2 plug n play wireless ip cameras like the Candy Bar Cam. The software is free and is the easiest IP camera to setup in the world. Just plug it in to your network, no router config is needed, even for remote access and you can even view the camera on your 3G mobile phone. See http://www.bikal.co.uk/network-webcam/pnp-ipcam.html. I'm not sure but I think BiKal has dealers around the world but ask them to find out.

Gigapixel question (cameras)?

Q. I know for example there could be a camera that has 14 megapixels. My first question is how do people measure a (mega)pixel? And I know there isn't a gigapixel, but would it be like SUPER high quality?

Answer
They measure it by knowing how many individual photosensitive elements there are on the camera sensor. If there are a million, then it's a megapixel.

There is a 1.8gigapixel camera, link

quoting

"The camera uses 368 five-megapixel camera sensors aimed through a telescopic array to pick out birds in flight and humans on the move on the Earthâs surface. ARGUS stands for Autonomous Real-Time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance Imaging System."

Is there a significant difference in picture quality between 4 and 4s. I wanted to use the phone for my instagram. I like to take personal pictures along with nature /sky shots. Tell me your opinions.

Answer
iPhone 4 camera is a 5 megapixel camera
While the 4s is an 8 megapixel camera
4s shoots 1080p HD videos while the 4 shoots 720p
If you are planning on getting one of them and you really don't need professional photographing
And want one which is good enough to post good photos on Instagram then go with the 4
The iPhone 4 camera is really good and it will be more than enough to post photos on Instagram
Hope I helped :)

Does anyone know of a good DSLR with geo-tagging built in?

Peter

I want a good DSLR camera and GPS capability built-in without the need for an add-on or adaptor sort of thing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
None yet.

Nikon has an unobtrusive GP1 that fits on the cameras hot shoe

http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/GPS/25396/GP-1-GPS-Unit.html

As time goes by, you will start to see GPS and geo-tagging becoming standard.

There are some P&S cameras with geo-tagging

DSLR light meters extensions?

John

What is the piece of equipment that comes with light meters I assume that attaches the top of DSLRs? I see it sometimes on top of certain photographers cameras, but don't know the name of the equipment. I assume it's related to the light meter in some way. Thanks

Answer
dSLR cameras have light meters built-in and do NOT need any extensions.

The only thing that mounts on the cameras hot shoe are external electronic flash units, GPS units and remote flash triggers

Cameras...what to buy?!?

Kerr

I have always loved photography and have always tried to take amazing pictures with the camera i have (not a very good one!) and i have also been told i have an 'eye' for taking photos. I am going to South Africa in December and i am cage diving with Great White Sharks. A lot of time will be spent on the boat and i want a camera so i can take photos of the sharks, whales, seals etc that breach the water and also take photos of the amazing views in Cape Town. I would like a DSLR camera that's good but i don't have a huge amount of money and i am hoping to spend £300-400. Hopefully in the future i will be able to afford a better camera but im hoping you will be able to give me advice on cameras in that price range. Thanks for your help!

how come the 0.7 mp camera of the ipod touch 4g can capture 720p video?

Antar O

but does having more mp make the video quality better? or it doesn't matter?

Answer
Interpolation. The output does not really have the 1280x720 resolution, it is just in the 720p format.

If you look at the detailed camcorder reviews at e.g. camcorderinfo.com you will find that this is nothing new. Most consumer "HD" camcorders, when resolution is actually measured (by pointing the camera at a test chart and seeing how many lines can be resolved in the resulting recording), do not come close to the possible resolution of the format.

Edit - added: Some misinformation posted here by others needs correcting.

1. "720p" refers to 1280x720, not 1024x768. 1280x720 = 921,600 pixels. 1024x768 is called "XGA", not "720p".

2. 921,600 pixels is 0.9 megapixels. The "mega = 1,048,576" conversion is ONLY properly used for RAM. For example, a "100 megabit" Ethernet connection runs at 100,000,000 bits/second. A "500 GB" hard drive has 500,000,000,000 bytes. Similarly a "1 megapixel" image has 1,000,000 pixels.

3. In video formats expressed as e.g. 720p, you do not take anything away for "invisible sync info." You don't do even do that for SD when it's quoted as "480i". All 480 scan lines are visible picture info. Yes, there is invisible sync info in NTSC, PAL, etc., formatted video, but for ex. in NTSC this is how you get from 480 to 525 scan lines; the sync info is in the extra 45 scan lines. Similarly in HD formats, "720p" means 720 *visible* pixels on the vertical dimention, , just as there are 768 visible pixels vertically in XGA. Now, sync info must of course be sent to the display, and this does take time - but there are still 720 visible lines. So there is no "7 percent less" to allow for sync info.

Edit2 - added: I have the answer!

The sensor actually is 1280x720 pixels, so it can create 720p video, no problem. That is a 16:9 format.

But still pictures... most still camera take 4:3 pictures, and the iPod's camera does the same. A 4:3 picture with 720 pixels vertically is 960x720. That's 691,200 pixels, or 0.7 megapixels.

So it doesn't have a 0.7 mP sensor at all. They just only use 0.7 mP of it for still pictures.

My 1.3 MegaPixel Camera....?

AladdinZan

I had a 5MP camera and it broke. It just stopped working for no reason.

So I started using a Photoclip 5 in 1 that I had years ago and shelved. It is fantastic. The photos are very very good quality and I am surprised - even when I am not using the full size pics.

How can this be so? Surely 5MP pics must be better, or is it the build quality of the camera?

Answer
Are you viewing these on your PC? If so than that would be the main reason. Resolutions beyond a MP or two generally only make a difference in print.

More than that though, and despite what the camera makers would have you believe, megapixels definitely aren't everything. The quality of the lens plays a big part as well. While it sounds a bit counterproductive for a camera maker to stick a sensor with higher resolution than the glass in front of it could resolve in the first place, this often the case. Detail destroying "noise" is another factor. Ironically as you increase the number of pixels, as a rule this also goes up. On many recent compact digitals it has gotten to the point where this noise is so severe that at best it completely cancels out any resolution benefit these cameras would otherwise have had!

How much difference in photo quality is there between a VGA (640x480) vs. a 1.3 megapixel camera phone?

Aurora Bel

For instance the Nokia 6103 vs. the Samsung SGH-D807

Answer
The difference in your example is in resolution (how many pixels are created), which is not the whole story on quality.

VGA = 640x480 = 307,200 pixels

1.3 MP = 1300x1000 =1,300,000 pixels

So the 1.3 MP phone is about 4 times more resolution than VGA. That will let you view and print bigger images than VGA without getting fuzzy. The pictures will look bigger on a computer screen.

But there is much more to quality than just size. The lens, the focusing mechanism, the color processing, etc., all contribute to whether you get a clear, naturally colored picture.

Even at 1.3 MP you will not get very good prints at the normal sizes. Most good digicams are at least 3 MP.

Good Luck

Comments on the Sony Cybershot W330 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera?

Hey guys,

see this camera here?

Since I am looking for a new digital camera, I came across this, and after reading through a couple reviews and details about it, Im thinking about getting this certain camera.
But what do YOU guys think? Maybe there are those of you who own this camera as well and would like to let me know about its pros and cons?

I read sooo many great reviews about it so i feel pretty confident about putting my mind into this camera, so...

But Another question, It says the camera is available in red(although it looks pink to me), silver, black and blue; but I was looking at the pictures on google, and I saw a couple of them were this neon-ish green colour and i absolutely fell IN LOVE with it.
So is the green colour only available somewhere else? Or did they possible get the colour customized?

Please please pleassse share your knowledge about this,!
Thank youuu. :D

Answer
It is a great little camera. Uses a proprietary Lithium-Ion battery pack: Do you travel a lot? Many travelers prefer a camera that can use AA alkaline batteries, which are available everywhere, instead of having to lug around the charger for the camera.

For just twenty-five bucks more, the Sony DSC-W350 has a better feature set!

Neon Green? It would make you look foolish. Stick with silver or black (grin).

A good DSLR camera that can shoot profession-quality photos?

cmptr_man

Hi there! I'm looking to purchase a mid-level DSLR camera (target budget around $1,000 for body only) that I'm planning on using to start building a photography portfolio with. I'll be shooting portraits, however some shots will be studio while others will be on location. So my perfect camera will need to be able to capture details in low lighting, but also excel at taking crisp shots in nature without losing detail on the subject.

I'm looking for a camera with low noise, so I can print large reproductions (16x20 and up). I'm not opposed to buying a more expensive lens to give it that "professional look", but I want to make sure that if I'm investing that kind of money (> $1500) that the lenses can be used on a better model that I upgrade to down the road. I know that Canon and Nikon can interchange lenses, but if Sony or another brand have a better higher-end product that I can eventually invest in, I'd be willing to go that route.

I know that Canon and Nikon are considered the professional's choice (right???)--however, I used to own a Nikon and found the default saturation of color to be too rich for most of my applications. But that was an older model (don't remember the number--maybe D30??, but it was only 8MP, so it had to be a few years old) so perhaps their products aren't that way anymore.

Video is not important to me at all. If I ever use it, it will be casually (kid's concert or birthday party or something.) The most important thing for me, hands down, is photo quality.

Does anyone have any recommendations to pass along?
Thanks in advance for your help with this!
I'm also kinda curious if anyone's heard good things about Pentax. This is a new manufacturer for me, and I don't know anything about them--though their online reviews look really good. Are they taken seriously in the professional space?
It looks like I may need to provide some more information. I'm not new to photography. I was originally a graphic design student and took several classes in photography--however, that was many years ago, back before the digital era (so, darkroom processing was part of the course list.) Because of personal events in my life, I had to put my passion for the arts on hold. Now, I'm ready to dive back in.

I know exactly what kind of shots I'm looking to do. I've got a great handle on lighting, backdrops, etc. What I'm not entirely sure of is what camera would get me the results I'm looking for.

Perhaps this isn't the best place to ask such questions...

Answer
Have no fears or doubts about Pentax quality.
Pentax have made excellent lenses and cameras for many years, some of the best around.
They were late getting into digital SLRs but all their offerings have been good and got very good reviews.
The K-7 for example is a very well reviewed and highly regarded camera used by many professional photographers.
Every Pentax lens ever made will fit onto the new Pentax digital SLRs and will fit the K-01 CSC camera.
Even their medium format lenses with their longer back focus will fit via adaptors.
Nikon have the same philosophy. Canon changed their mount and upset thousands of loyal users who had to buy new lenses.

A camera must fit you to be efficiently usable in your own hands.
handle some cameras, then decide.
Whatever specs it has, no camera can take professional looking pictures.
Cameras cannot be photographers. That's your job if you want good pictures.
Your graphic design pen cannot draw pictures you don't show it how to draw and it still doesn't know what it's done when the picture is finished, even for a masterpiece, haha
Learn the techniques, lighting, contrast control, balance and composition, much of which which you'll know from graphic design and your photo course.
How to get that magic look from a model. Photographers sometimes have to be brilliant at interpersonal skills, as the office people like to put it.
The patience to wait until the lighting is just right, the clouds are in the right places, the people are in a sympathetic arrangement with your picture idea, the cat or the deer are looking the right way, the scene is set, and then do it right so the moment isn't spoiled.
How to set up and operate the camera so the picture already in your head is actually achievable later using the image recorded by the film or sensor.
Henri knew where to wait, what shutter speed to have already set to get the right degree of blur, what the lines of the picture were, what he wanted the picture to feel like, and he got it right on a simple manual camera long before auto anything existed.
With that simple camera and a standard 50mm lens he practically invented street photography.
http://www.lacasapark.com/la/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/cartier-bresson-hyeres1.jpg
I won't be upgrading my 350D for a long time yet. it's one of the better ones, even better than the 400D.
8 megapixels is plenty for good 20 x16 prints. Plenty of studios still run with those old 350D well-performing workhorses for studio and outdoor work, and there are thousands of even older film cameras still doing sterling service..
While they deliver the goods there's no need to change, no need to learn how to get the best out of a new camera or lens, no need to spend money.
Happy hunting.....

what is the best DSLR camera for HD video 100-170$ ?

Silas

I am looking for A DSLR camera that shoots HD quality video for up to 180$ I see alot of lowpriced DSLR camera's at walmart, and Target, but what model is the best in that price range.

Answer
There is no "dSLR" at that price. Only "point & shoot" that looks like a dSLR. The lens is not changeable. Manual controls are more than a pocket point & shoot, less than a dSLR.

These cameras - and dSLRs and point & shoot are designed to capture still images. Video capture is a secondary "convenience feature". This does not mean they cannot capture good video - when used properly, they can - but they are not camcorders and cannot be treated like one. Prolonged video capture can cause the camera to overheat - and it takes a long time to cool down. Most record mono-audio.

Camcorders are designed for video capture - and as long as there is space on the memory card and power available, capturing video continues - and no issue with the camcorder overheating. Most also record stereo audio. Capturing still images a secondary "convenience feature". This does not mean they cannot capture good stills - when used properly, they can - but they are not dSLRs or bridge cameras or even point & shoot cameras and should not be treated like one.

When you get a tool for a specific application it is best to get it for its primary design purpose. When you get the tool for a secondary design, expect to use work-arounds or plan on having problems.

Which filming-camera should I buy?

FrankS

Hi,
I would like to buy a good camera that I want to use for filming but my budget doesn't get higher than 1000. Nowadays most camcorders are those compacts small filming camera's which some don't even have a mic port and many of the other things that I think you should have if you want to film decent. My mother has a Nikon D7000 SLR which is mostly meant for photos but when filming it also does a great job in my opinion. I really would like to see a camcorder that isn't a compact thing but is there a camcorder that almost or does the same job like the D7000 maybe that can change my mind about those small camcorders. What should I buy just a camcorder or a SLR? And also then which one?

So with good filming quality like the D7000.

Answer
You are comparing different classes of cameras.

The dSLR is designed to take good still images. Video capture is a "convenience feature" - and while the D7000 does a decent job, video manual controls are lacking. Conversely, camcorders are designed to take good video and still image capture is a "convenience feature". Some do an OK job with that, but various controls for stills are lacking.

Most of the reasons camcorders (and cameras) get bigger is because large lenses and large imaging chips are used for improved image quality (still or video) and this is most apparent under low light conditions.

Good prosumer and pro camcorders generally have a lens filter diameter of 70mm or larger and a 3-chip imaging array that is 1/3" or larger. Good, big glass and good large silicon are expensive to make. The closest I can get to a camcorder in your price range with decent sized lens and imaging chip is something in the Canon HF S series. This is a high-end consumer grade camcorder that records highly compressed AVCHD video in MTS files. The Sony HDR-CX900 series is outside your budget - as are the Sony HDR-FX7 and HDR-FX1000 prosumer cams. The least expensive camcorder with a decent lens filter diameter is the Canon GL2. It is outside your budget and capture standard definition video only. The least expensive high definition camcorder worth investigating that is larger than a regular consumer grade compact is the Sony-HDR-FX7. The GL2 and FX7 are well outside your budget.

And to be clear - you cannot "film" with digital cameras or camcorders - they do not use film. Film cameras use film - like 8mm cameras or those higher end Hollywood cameras from Panavision and Arri. Digital cameras and camcorders capture images or video - but they do not "film" anything. Film cameras capture at 24 frames per second. Many digital cameras and camcorders typically capture video at 29.97 frames per second and electronically derive the 24 fps to mimic film frame rate capture. There are some which capture video natively at 24 fps - and budget/free/bundled video editors have issues dealing with that frame rate.

The D7000 does a fine job capturing short video clips where manual audio control is not a high priority and good low light behavior is not important.

What is the world's fastest digital camera?

Steven W

Hi, I am looking to upgrade my digital SLR camera but there are so many of them out there! I have been looking around and I got wondering, what is the fastest of all camera currently on the market? I guess what I really mean by that is - which camera has the quickest continuous shooting speed? Thanks!

Answer
It depends. The fastest DSLR that I know of is way out of most people's price range: The 1D Mark III (Canon) is 10 FPS, and the indomitable Nikon D3 runs at 9 FPS. Although I wouldn't personally consider it, Casio has released a new camera, the EX-F1, that shoots at an incredible 60 FPS, with a maximum shutter speed of 1/40000 (that's FIVE digits), well beyond any other camera, period (and faster than a good lot of film cameras to boot). It also has brilliant firmware for handling all of the files. It's $1000 dollars, but if you're looking for speed, it's insane.

Note: If you're looking for DSLR quality, beware: It's a P&S.

Also, see Ace's comment.

Final edit: The fastest film camera that I am aware of is the Nikon F5, which is lot of camera for 500 (in perfect condition) dollars but still may be too much for the casual user. It shoots at 8 FPS.

What is a 1.3 megapixel camera look like? (please help!)?

Q. my camera keeps getting this:

It should have been like this:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/pls/fissazionejewls/RINGS/230336-1BB.jpg?o=12

I have the Samsung Seek and my provider is the I-wireless.

Answer
a 1.3 mp sensor is like those found on cell phones or webcams.

The results you are getting are just about right for those cameras

The sample of what you want could be achieved using a 6 mp dSLR (like a Nikon D100 or D40) using a macro lens

It seems that you have unrealistic expectations of your tiny camera.

Most people who are shooting products for sale on the Internet, use at a minimum, a 8 mp P&S or as mentioned a 6 mp dSLR camera. When shooting jewelry, some kind of light tent is used as well to provide even lighting.

Know megapixels?

.

My distant uncle forgot his Digital Camera at my place. He later let me know that I could keep the camera.

I dont have the box or anything. There's not much written on the body of the camera (Fuji F420). So my question is...

HOW DO I KNOW HOW MUCH MEGA PIXEL THE CAMERA IS.

Answer
Fujifilm today announced the FinePix F420 Zoom, while it has a similar look and feel to the F410 it has a smaller case a larger, higher resolution LCD monitor, is powered by a supplied rechargeable battery or AAA batteries and a video out socket for display on a TV. The camera features a 3.1 million pixel SuperCCD HR and three times optical zoom lens. In addition movies can be recorded at a full 30 frames per second for as long as there is space on the xD-Picture Card. Jumping on the bandwagon the F420 Zoom also has PictBridge support (although just how many people will use it in any camera is yet to be seen).

Press Release (Fujifilm UK):

FinePix F420 Zoom: tiny and shiny, but no lightweight

Smallest Fujifilm camera to incorporate Super CCD HR technology and 30 frames per second video

21 October 2003 - Fujifilm today introduced the FinePix F420 Zoom, an A-list compact digital camera that marries style with substance to stand out from the crowd.

Building on the success of the highly acclaimed FinePix F410 Zoom, the FinePix F420 Zoom oozes quality with its robust, metal body, yet measures just 77 (W) x 69 (H) x 26.4 (D) mm - even smaller than its predecessor.

A real show-stopper, the FinePix F420 Zoom is the smallest camera to include Fujifilm's 4th Generation Super CCD HR (High Resolution) technology and can realise 3 million effective pixels, producing 6 million recorded pixels. Its diminutive frame also successfully incorporates a 3x optical zoom lens and a voice memo recorder capable of storing up to 30 seconds of sound.

What's more, the FinePix F420 Zoom's high quality movie capture capabilities give an encore-deserving performance. It records at 30 frames per second, a frame-rate that will ensure silky-smooth movie clips.

While this camera's compact dimensions ensure it will fit into any shirt pocket or clutch bag, usability has not been compromised. The FinePix F420 Zoom comfortably incorporates a 1.8" LCD monitor into its svelte frame, as well as a Video Out socket for viewing images on a TV. The camera is also compatible with PictBridge, the industry standard for printing images from a digital camera without using a PC, making the process simpler and more efficient than ever.

This camera is a real crowd pleaser, and powered by its rechargeable battery (with an option to use AAA batteries should it run low), you can be confident the FinePix F420 Zoom will last the night - even if you don't.

Adrian Clarke, Fujifilm's Director of Consumer Products, commented: "Earlier this year, the FinePix F410 Zoom set some serious standards in photography; heavyweight picture power, contained within a small metal shell. The FinePix F420 Zoom crams greater firepower into an even more discreet package."

"This camera is that rarest of combinations - it looks great wherever you take it, and you can be sure the pictures will, too."

FinePix F420 Zoom: Features at a glance

Fourth Generation Super CCD HR sensor with 3.1 million effective pixels, delivering 6.2 million recorded pixels
Movie capture at 30 frames per second (fps) with sound (320 x 240)
1.8", 134,000-pixel LCD monitor
Video Out socket for fast and easy on-screen viewing

AAA battery supply for additional off-the-shelf power
Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 36-108mm on a 35mm camera
Continuous shooting with frames at intervals as short as 0.25 seconds
xD-Picture Card⢠providing large storage capacity, low power consumption, fast write speed
PictBridge compatibility for direct printing
Super CCD HR technology

Fujifilm's Super CCD HR technology allows high resolution sensors to be housed in even smaller digital. The benefits include:

Ultra-high resolution images
Faster shutter speeds for action shots
Low noise photography
Low light photography

Why do so many people think higher megapixels are always better?

evil_kandy

The way I learned it, mega pixels aren't always good, especially in smaller cameras. Now the way I learned it could be way off, but I was told that especially in more compact cameras, they have smaller processors, and the more info they try to jam into it actually takes away from picture quality.

So if thats right, why do so many people think they need a camera with the highest possible mega pixels?

Answer
Because Manufactures, and electronics stores are pushing cameras with higher and higher megapixels.
Quote from one of my friends whom owns a Nikon Coolpix P6000

It has 13.5 megapixels, but how come when I put up the ISO past 400, I can't use the images? Aren't megapixels the most important thing to a digital camera? I wound up e-mailing the link to Ken Rockwells excellent article on megapixels v.s SENSOR SIZE: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

About a week later, he purchased my d40+ kit lens, because of the amount of megapixels compared to the physical sensor size.

Bottom Line: Just like blu-ray, don't listen to Best Buy, or Sony, when it comes to megapixels.

Nikon DSLR cameras...?

Cay

I have had several cameras and I am VERY into photography.. I have had many small digital cameras and also the first model of the canon Rebel. I am definitely considering buying a Nikon DSLR. I have looked into the d60, the d90, and the d5000.. I am wondering if the d90 and d5000 are worth the price over the d60.. Especially for a first time nikon user.. Thanks!!

Answer
D60 is an entry level DSLR while D90 is a semi-professional camera. If you can afford I would recommend D90 that come with better features.
11-point AF system,Continuous shooting as fast as 4.5 frames-per-second,Low noise ISO sensitivity from 200 to 3200,great 3-inch super-density 920,000-dot color LCD monitor,One-button Live View

D5000 is stay between D60 and D90
D5000 vs. Nikon D60:
- Dramatic improvement in low-light and difficult light image quality
- Improved auto white balance (but still not perfect)
- Slightly bigger (taller and deeper) body, slightly heavier
- 11 autofocus points, 3D matrix metering, Auto D-Lighting
- Faster continuous shot performance (4fps vs 3)
- RAW+JPG with choice of JPEG compression
- Full feature set including bracketing
- Slightly smaller viewfinder, but adds optional grid line support
- LiveView with HD Movie Mode
- Multi selector supports diagonal movement instead of 4 directions
- support for optional Nikon GPS unit
- same outstanding 18-55VR kit lens

and D5000 vs. Nikon D90:
- Significantly more compact, lighter body
- No autofocus motor in body for older or more professional lenses
- No top LCD; must use back display to review settings
- Slightly slower continuous shot performance (4fps vs 4.5)
- Single command dial means more access to Menu for changing settings
- Built-in flash cannot command external flash units with Nikon Creative Lighting System
- No option for extra battery grip
- Kit lens only 18-55VR vs 18-105VR

What type of DSLR Camera is Right For Me?

Michael J

Hi, I'm looking for a nice quality DSLR bundle package with nice lenses. I'm looking for very detailed close images, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

Answer
The DSLR camera is one thing and for under $550 you can find one on Amazon with two lenses, 18-55 mm and 55-200 mm.

Getting very detailed close images will require a different lens .. a macro lens like the 60 mm or 105 mm macros and they are not inexpensive.

60 mm $470

105 mm $850
