You get $100 insurance by default. Then it cost something to add more. It depends on how far and how heavy something is.

Cleaning DSLR camera + possible damage? (Canon Rebel T2i)?

Q. I have a Canon Rebel T2i which might have been damaged...

I was taking pictures out in the light rain and got some water droplets on my lens. I didn't have anything to wipe it down with and not wanting to scratch the lens I just put the lens cap back on it and put it back in my bag...this was a week ago... So, could there be moisture inside the lens and if so can it cause permanent damage? How much would it cost to fix?

Also, I stupidly trusted someone who has a DSLR camera themselves and let them clean my camera... The person used a air brush/ regular brush to clean the mirror inside which now looks like there's makeup all over the lens (from the view finder). If the mirror is slightly scratched, who'd it be noticeable in pictures I take or not? How much would it cost to get the mirror replaced, e.g? I have no insurance on the camera. I'm a beginner in handling DSLR cameras...please help!

Answer
First, you really shouldn't be using your camera and lens in the rain. They aren't weather sealed so if the camera and lens actually got wet there is the potential for problems. A few water droplets on the front element of the lens shouldn't cause any problems but you should buy a lens cleaning cloth to clean the lens with and a UV filter to use to protect the front element of the lens.

Any dust or scratches on the mirror won't affect your image quality because when you press the shutter release the mirror swings up and out of the light path so the light coming through the lens can expose the sensor. However, if there is a haze on the mirror it can make it difficult to compose your pictures so it may need replacing.

In the Owner's Manual for your camera there is a section on "Care and Cleaning" of your camera. Had you read it you would have seen a warning worded something like this: "WARNING! Do not touch the mirror inside the camera with anything. It is a front-surface mirror and easily damaged."

Also in the back of the Owner's Manual you should find a listing of Canon Authorized Service Centers with phone numbers and addresses. Call one of them and ask how much it will cost to replace the mirror. Ask your "friend" to pay half the cost and don't ever let him near your camera again.
