I am traveling to australia for a second time but for the first time with my dslr camera. don't want to get to the airport and the say i cant take it on the plane. lol

Answer
Cameras are no problem. They are not interested in confiscating cameras. Thousands of people travel everyday with cameras. Before digital cameras became so popular, people carried film SLR cameras with no problems on planes - and lenses, and flash units and bags of camera equipment.

Do NOT put your camera in a checked suitcase. Theft of items from suitcases does happen sometimes, and the more valuable something is, the more likely it would be to disappear.

Can I get some recomendations for some camera equipment for hiking?

Gary

I have a big photography project in mind while hiking, however I'm still learning quite a bit about my DSLR camera. I currently have a Canon rebel t3i along with the stock lens (18-55mm) and a (75-300mm) zoom lens. It also came with a wide angle angle converter, a telephoto converter, and macro attachments. Judging from what little bit I have seen about the accessories they are garbage, especially the wide angle, I know the macro attachments work fairly well if you can be patient enough and I have yet to find a use for the telephoto converter...

but my big question is, if I want to take a DSLR camera out on a long distance hike (Appalachian trail for example) is that practical? Or is something like the gopro more realistic? My main focus would be landscape shots, but it would be nice if the camera could handle other smaller things like an insect or some other form of wildlife. Right now when I go out I take the macro attachments and the 2 lenses and a tripod (manfroto compact mkc3-h01) but it would be nice to have a lens that can handle either job. Any recommendations are appreciated.
I'm 25, I've hiked a bit so I'm not a complete novice, and I just got out the army and I stay active. I can't do really long hikes with a full pack just yet, but I'm working on lowering my pack weight. Last weekend I hiked for 2 days, 14 miles a day with around a 33 lb pack.

Answer
Seriously difficult question to answer, can you handle a long 'trek' with extra weight...I carry my gear for hours at a time covering over 30 miles, so i'm used to this....I can't guess your age or fitness level by your question.

The best option is the DSLR for decent quality 'macro' or 'landscape' shots...judging by the question i'll hazard a guess that you are a teenager...any interest in a particular subject requires you to be sensible, start off slowly and build up your capacity for distance...it lets you build your confidence while highlighting issues that could make an outing uncomfortable or difficult. Try practising photographing wildlife in your garden (insects, birds, butterflies etc)...I have covered every park in my city - once caught a 'Australian Black Swan' in a Loch in Scotland...just on a routine walk...most people I know didn't even know a Black Swan existed...use your equipment as often as possible , keep practising and stay as physically active as possible, if you are fit, nature photography is a breeze.

I will use whatever equipment I have, to get a 'shot'...this let's you see how good your equipment is and gives you the experience to know what you really need if the 'shots' aren't up to much...for example - more practice or better equipment. That's what I enjoy about photography...'squeezing' everything out of a piece of equipment...making it work.

GoPro cameras for me are just a bit of fun...I wouldn't consider any serious photography or video work with them...i'd use one to record my commute on a bicycle or a snorkel dive.

@ Additional Details: my backpack is around the 10 Kilo weight (maximum) and that's only for camera equipment (first aid and a towel), I carry my kit everywhere - it's just another part of me, i've been doing this for years though...and more importantly 'I enjoy it'...I don't carry a tripod, that's my choice though and sometimes I regret it...just can't be annoyed with the 'bulk'...if I need to lighten my backpack...I take the laptop out.

Nokia N8 can take better pics than any of these phones anyday. They've the Carl-Zeiss lens.

How close can you shoot with this camera?

Sony - NEX-5N 16.1-Megapixel Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens

How close can you get with the lens that is included?

I want to buy the NEX-5N and was wondering how close you can shoot with the standard 18-55mm lens that comes included. I know there is a wide angle accessory but i just want to know what the standard lens is capable of.
I do not mean zoom, but i mean how close can you get to the lens while being able to take a quality photo.

Answer
According to the specifications found on Sony's website, the minimum focusing distance of the 18-55mm lens (SEL1855) is around 9.8".

If you want to shoot macro (very close up) you will need a dedicated macro lens...30mm f/3.5 with a minimum focusing distance of 3.84".

Wide angle 'accessory'? You can buy a wide angle E mount lens (16mm f/2.8) and you can buy an ultra wide converter to attach to the 16mm. You can also buy a 24mm wide-angle Zeiss prime lens...
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644718503

However......if you are actually asking how much you can 'zoom' in with the 18-55mm, by asking, "how close can you get"...then the lens is only 55mm....around 3x 'zoom'.

I would like to get her a lens, or flash for Xmas, but I don't know anything about cameras at all. My GF has a Nikon - D5100 16.2-Megapixel DSLR Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens, and I am trying to get her a new lens, that is around the 200-300 price range. I don't know what to look for in a lens, but at least for her camera to be able to zoom 25-50 ft, rather than the lens she has on it now. Either that, or a Flash that is attachable that would be used to light up dark rooms, or night. Can someone shoot me links, or something to help me get a view of something?

Answer
In your price range the 55-200 mm VR will be a good one. With it she will be able to shoot sports, action and some wildlife.

A good used Nikon flash like the Nikon SB600 will cost just over $200, but unless she shoots a lot of events, the lens will be more useful

Here is a list of all the lenses available for the D5100. Just look at the AF-S lenses so she can shoot using auto-focus

Is a Kindle Fire or a Nikon camera better to own?

Jeanie

I am debating between a Kindle Fire or a Nikon COOLPIX 16 Megapixels 6x Opt zoom with a 2.7 LCD screen. Both the Kindle Fire and the Nikon camera are really great, but I don't know which electronic would be better to have. This may be a dumb question but I would like to know!

Answer
I prefer that you go for the kindle fire since it has more features, the bigger screen and you can enjoy a lot of things like:

- You can watch movies
- Tv shows
- Internet browsing
- Book reading
- Magazines
- Over 18K Apps
- Facebook, twitter, youtube etc.

While the coolpix would only allow you to get the videos and pictures which is totally based on your preference. If you like it than get it!

Here I found a good review on kindle fire:

Answer
In a regular camera format, the Canon 1Ds Mark ll has 16.7 megapixels. It costs $7.000 without lenses.
For studio work, the Hasselblad mentioned above has 39 megapixels on a single sensor. It costs $30.000.
They could go larger... it's really just a matter of time, but for now it's cost prohibitive.
Some people have made 1 GIGApixels images (also mentioned above) but this is accomplished by stitching hundreds of smaller pictures together.

what do I need to study to become a photographer?

 on ... EOS T3 DSLR Camera/ 18-55MM Lens/ Digital Flash Bundle | Overstock.com
dslr camera overstock image

Shanae

im 14 and interested in photography what should i study in school to help me become a photographer??

Answer
First, get a digital camera (high-end point-and-shoot will do to start with - if you get to be any good, you will need a high-end Digital SLR, aka "DSLR"). Go to the library and start reading books on photography in addition to thoroughly studying your camera's instruction manual. Start shooting! Shoot a lot of photos and compare your work to that in magazines, photog books, etc. Learn digital processing - Lightroom is good & widely used, Photoshop is tough to learn but terrific.

With a lot of practice, study (move on to AWAI's photography program, "Turn Your Pictures into Cash" and then advanced programs - awaionline.com), decide what kind of photography suits your style, interests, personality, etc. If you should decide you want to move into professional fine-art or high-end magazine illustration, or fashion photog, then consider going to university for a fine arts degree in photography. Most photogs do not need a degree. They learn on their own by studying, and shooting a very great deal. There are teens who become good photogs and sell their work!

TIP: only go with Canon or Nikon, even for your starter camera. And make sure you start with at least 8, preferably 12 or more megapixels. The ratings numbers are always stated! You can get a good starter camera on overstock (o.com), Walmart, Staples, etc, and buy plenty of cards. Staff will show you, and you can always start by reading Photog for Dummies, etc, at the library so you know what I'm talking about here!

Do "fancy" DSLR cameras usually go on sale on Black Friday?

Amy Miller

I've been wanting/looking into the Canon t3i DSLR camera (with lens) which is priced at $600 (well, $599 to be exact) but I was wondering, do things like that even go on sale for Black Friday? If so, do you know about how much they go on sale for?

I'm just wondering if it's actually worth waiting until Black Friday to purchase the camera or not...

Answer
As DSLR cameras go, the Canon T3i is probably about the least "fancy" one about. It's a basic, bog-standard beginners DSLR.

Black Friday is just yet another sales ploy. It's just a way of shifting cheap tat and previous generation electronics that most people don't really want. You will get discounts on old electronics which have been superseded, stuff that the retailers have overstocked on and specially bought in cheap goods that you wouldn't buy at any other time of the year, but rarely anything that is current and popular.

Sometimes retailers will push prices up just before Black Friday so that you see a price drop and an apparent bargain on the day, but it's rare to get a real bargain on anything that is both current and popular.

You might be lucky, but I really don't expect to see a significant drop on the T3i or any other current, popular DSLR until the retailers want to get rid of stocks because of a new model.

Having said that, you *might* see some bargain Nikon D5100 DSLR cameras on Black Friday. Nikon have been selling the D5100 for several years now and they bought out a D5200 to replace it just over a year ago. They have just this month launched a D5300 with wireless capability. That means there's lots of stocks of 2 generation old D5100 cameras that the retailers want to shift.

Although it's now 2 generations old, The D5100 is still a very good camera with a great sensor and it would actually be a very good alternative to the Canon: http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-T3i-vs-Nikon-D5100

The trick with finding bargains on Black Friday is to look out for old stock like that. When there are several generations of similar equipment available the retailers use the opportunity to shift the old stock. If you don't *need* the latest extra gizmos then you can pick up a bargain.

The Nikon D5100 is already something of a bargain because of the D5200 and D5300 being on the market. If Black Friday pushes prices even lower then it would be a great buy.

What is the difference between a digital camera and a dslr?

16 megapixel camera best buy
on Nikon Coolpix S6300 16MP Digital Camera - Black - Best Buy - Ottawa
16 megapixel camera best buy image

Jessie

I'm not so smart when it comes to cameras so if this is a really stupid question please dont judge me. I see a digital camera for about up to 300 dollars and it has 14-16 megapixels but then theres dslr's that cost much much more and they are the same megapixels. I don't quite understand? Can you take just as well pictures as a dslr?

Answer
Nah, not a dumb question. The big difference is a regular old digital camera can be used for anything, while a DSLR is typically only used for really high end photography or professional photography work. Here's why.

An SLR camera is typically a 35mm film camera where SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex, which means that the camera use a mirror and a prism system to reflect the light in a way that the photographer can look directly through the lens to see exactly what is being captured in frame. It's when you look through the little viewfinder on the back of the camera as opposed to most digital cameras which have LCD screens on the back showing what the camera is taking a picture of.

So, a DSLR is a digital version of an SLR camera, but the differences don't really stop with just the direct lens view through viewfinder vs. LCD screen. SLRs and DSLRs are camera systems, really, as opposed to a one piece compact digital or even 35mm film camera. Typically DSLRs and SLRs are sold as just the bodies, and you buy the lenses separately as there is a vast array of options for lens types and mm sizes, telephoto with massive zooms, pretty standard 35-70mm normal use lenses, macro lenses for really close up shots, etc. SLR camera bodies have all sorts of adjustments and features not present on normal cheaper cameras, where you have to adjust the film speed, the shutter speed, f-stop with the aperture, choose your field of view in mm, manual focus, you can add a flash to the top of the camera, SLRs typically always have light meters built in to the viewfinders so you know if the exposure is correct, you can attach remote triggers for very slow shutter speeds when the camera is mounted on a tripod so you could take a photo say, of the night sky over 8 hours as the stars circle around the sky above the camera.

So a DSLR is a digital version of an SLR camera, and as such, they are very expensive. Some photographers like real film for certain qualities you can't get with a digital, and others like the immediate availability of viewing and using your shots with a digital. If you're planning on really getting into photography, you'd have to decide if you wanted a traditional SLR body or a Digital SLR body, as the prices are quite different (the digital being much more expensive). Unless you're going to become an avid amateur photographer, a nice digital with a high MP rating would be fine for you, a DSLR is too fancy for what you're going to do.

Personally, I've been an amateur wildlife and outdoor still life and scenery photographer for about 12 years, and I have a really great 35mm SLR body with a multitude of lenses to suit my needs, and I love it, but then I also have a nice little compact digital 12 megapixel camera for just taking photos of friends and family and at gatherings and stuff. Just for the every day normal stuff, and it's just great for that, instead of having to lug out the big camera and make all the adjustments and shoot a whole roll and then develop it.

DSLRs give you much, MUCH more control over image manipulation while taking the shot, but regular digitals are offering more and more features like different settings for macro, normal, and infinite focuses, red eye reduction, auto, on, or off flash settings, and stuff like that, so you can still have some control over the photo you're shooting, but just not nearly as much as with an SLR. But like I said, for the average photo taker, you don't need all the fancy stuff that comes with the SLRs. It's a costly investment, and you have to teach yourself how to take advantage and how to use all the features and settings of the SLRs in order to use them, and justify the investment.

Just for reference, a DSLR looks pretty much the same as a film based SLR. They are the cameras you see professional photographers using that have a rectangular body with the lens mounted in the middle of the front, protruding out a few inches or more depending on the zoom level. Regular digital cameras are usually just a square or rectangular shape with a small lens that pops out the front when you turn the camera on. You probably have seen the difference if you've been looking online or in a store at cameras though.

I don't think you need the advantages of a DSLR based on your knowledge and experience with photography, unless you want to turn it into a new hobby. Otherwise, a nice digital camera with a nice high megapixel rating will be just great for you and your photos! Hope I helped!

How do you take professional photos with a cheap camera?

Whatever

I have a Sony WX60 with 16 megapixels and basically it's just a small digital camera that cost me 159 euros. Anyway, is there a way to "cheat" and make your photos look professional? Especially with portrait landscape and portrait photos? If you can refer me to a GOOD tutorial that'd be great.
I have Photoshop by the way.
Typo: with landscape and portrait photos*

Answer
What makes good photos good is not the camera used to take them, but what you point it at. "Professional" photographers take time to compose the image properly alter the lighting if necessary using flashes or modifiers. Sure, an expensive camera helps, but clicking the button is just one step in a long process.

Your camera should be fine to get you started. There's no shortcut to amazing photos - I recommend you buy a could of photography books and study the advice. Amazon has loads of inexpensive digital photography guides. Go to art galleries and look at other photographers' work - do a mini-critique in your head - do you like it? Why?

Once you've worked out how to set up interesting photos in your head, the standard of your photography will naturally improve as you master the skills needed to get the most out of your camera.

Best camera option for camping and scuba diving?

dslr camera 2013
on DSLR CAMERAS :How to Decide Which DSLR Camera is right for You
dslr camera 2013 image

Chief

I´m getting ready for a camping trip to the Amazon Rainforest and later to a Scuba Diving marathon in Santa Marta, Colombia. I currently use a Canon T3i DSLR camera as my main camera, but because of its size and sheer fragility I have opted not to take it with me.

Originally I was planning to buy a waterproof case for my iPhone as it was the cheapest option, but this wouldn't allow me to take pictures while Scuba diving.

I am an amateur photographer, but I do like quality and so I was thinking about buying a GoPro Hero 3+, but after reading reviews it was obvious the audio quality was is not very good at all. I am now thinking of buying a Canon G16 camera which would allow me to have more control on the overall camera, as well as being able to Scuba dive with it if I bought the Canon Waterproof Case WP-DC52. The downside of this camera is that I can not seem to find a suitable case for it to be protected while I'm in the Amazon.

Please I would like for this community to suggest any cameras and/or gear for the things I already have so that I can take great pictures of my trip!

Thank you.

Answer
I think you are wise to leave the T3i at home, most likely it wouldn't survive.

Maybe your best bet is one of the waterproof cameras. Most companies make at least one model, and Olympus has several in its tough series. Here is a list of the ones that Popular Photography featured in their April edition.
Popular Photography â April 2013
Sony Cyber-shot TF1 - $198 (need reviews)
Fujifilm FinePix XP60 - $198
Pentax WG-3 GPS - $297
Nikon Coolpix AW110 - $347
Olympus Stylus TG-2 - $379
Panasonic Lumix TS5 - $399

Answer
You'd do better to put a Tamron 18-270 or 18-250 (not 18-200) lens on a small DSLR body like a Sony A37, or other brand of your choice to keep it affordable chose an earlier camera model. The lens can stay with you when you upgrade provided that you don't jump ship from the brand. They can all be used in auto mode just like a P&S only you can develop your skills at your own pace.

But look at the dinky little DSLR Canon recently put on the market:

I also want to take high quality photographs, they can be one camera or two separate ones (one for filming the other for taking pictures). I just really need tips on what to get. I want to make short movies in very high definition on YouTube for a project I'm doing. Thank you!
My budget would probably be around $300 or less. I really want to make urban style type of videos.

What I need more right now is a video camera.

Answer
Hi Janet:

Cameras & camcorders range from under-$50 USD to many-thousands, and Y!A users range from 13-year old teens to well-seasoned retirees, so you need to give us a bit more information about how much you have to spend.

And your subject matter & visual approach for your YouTube project can influence the equipment selection greatly.

So rather than a bunch of "blue sky" model recommendations, I'll stick with the general "tips" you are asking for.

1) Set a budget of what you can afford to spend. Photography has traditionally been an expensive hobby (especially in the "film only" days). Video is cheaper than the old "home movies", but you still "get what you pay for" as far as quality.

2) You seem to be interested in both "filming" and "taking pictures", so don't get wrapped-up in the "Megapixels" hype, which is fairly meaningless for video once you get above 2.07MP (multiply 1080 by 1920 pixels, for HD, and you'll see what I mean). Higher megapixels only affects photo blowups, and still won't do you any good if your lens is cheaply made.

3) Don't get a camcorder or DSLR that shoots video your computer can't edit! HD video takes a lot of computing power, tons of RAM, large & fast hard drive storage, and high-end video cards. Match the edit software to the "codec" the video is made with.

4) Buy the best video tripod you can afford. Tripods don't get obsolete, and a jerky low-end pan head will frustrate you more than any other piece of gear. Still-cameras can pretty much sit still on top of any cheap mount, but a moving camera shot takes smooth, precision-tooled mounting & control.

5) Sound & microphones are more important than you may realize. People will watch a grainy YouTube video with good sound, but too-soft, echo-ey or distorted sound on the best-looking video will drive viewers away. Make sure you have an external mike input on at least one (if not all) of your camera heads. This is also vital for music videos.

6) Learn about "3 point lighting", and if you plan to make still-photo portraits, then study portraiture techniques. Good video (and photos) require good lighting, and more is better to prevent grainy poorly-detailed video footage.

7) As far as lensing, if you are on a low-end budget, look for Optical Zoom (not Digital Zoom, which is worthless). Some cheap cameras, like the Flip, and some not-so-cheap cameras like the GoPro Hero series have a fixed lens with no optical zoom. Digital zoom is added to many of these (which is just pixel-cropping) to make them seem "better".

8) Another lens-related feature is O.I.S. (for Optical Image Stabilization), which helps prevent shaky video & stills when your lens is zoomed-in or hand-held. Some cameras handle this better than others (and some call this feature by different names).

9) My final recommendation, as far as YouTube projects, is to not let a lack of budget or equipment stop your creative efforts. Two of the most-watched (and now, well-paid) YouTube stars are Jenna Mourey ("JennaMarbles") and Hanna Hart ("My Drunk Kitchen"), both of whom shot & edited almost all their famous videos with the iSight webcam on their MacBook laptops.

Feel free to post an "Additional Details" update to your Question to give us a price range, and we can recommend specific models or feature lists you can afford.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Why do my digital camera photos appear differently when transferred onto my computer? How Do I fix this?

Marc77

I just took a photo with my digital camera, and I love how it came out on the camera, but when I tansferred the photo using my USB cord, the picture looked very crappy.

How do I get the photo to look just like it does on the camera?

Answer
I'm not completely sure how to fix it, but I have the same problem.
I have an 8 megapixel camera, and when I take photos on it and transfer them to my laptop, they come out very pixelated and ugly looking. I believe this has something to do the resolution on the computer; that is, the computer screen resolution is larger than the photo resolution, so when you try and view a version of the photo that is larger than the photo itself, it becomes pixelated and ugly.

To fix, try and view the photo at a smaller size, and see if it comes out looking great that way.

Well if you want on the fly options there aren't many, rather any digital cameras as of now.

Tablets can offer such options sure.

What was the first available digital camera that was comprable to a 35mm film camera?

Lowell

What was the first digital camera released that could take pictures with as good or better quality than film?

Answer
The first digital camera based upon the body of a 35mm camera was the Kodak DCS420 (based upon a Nikon body)

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Kodak/kodak_dcs420.asp

Really the first digital camera to match film just came out. It is the Hasselblad H3D. Although it is a larger format than a 35mm, it is the closest yet to matching the old 35mm Kodachrome 25 emulsion.in sharpness and virtually no visible gain when enlarged to 20x30 inch prints

How do people get perfect skin on Instagram?

megapixel camera iphone 4s image

Kourtney

I have really good skin and my makeup looks good but when I take pictures (with the front facing camera, normal camera, and with/ without flash) my skin looks a little fuzzy. Like Kylie Jenner or Mythix have smooth even skin, even in close ups. Do they photoshop them and then put them back on instagram? I also have an iPhone 4S with 8 megapixel camera. Thanks!

Answer
Try standing in front of a window! They natural light makes your skin look flawless and your eyes pop! :) As far as famous people they probably have really good foundations and if it looks like a proffessionaly taken photo then they probably did repost it on instagram

How many photos can my iphone hold?

Eric

I have a 16g iphone 4s with an 8 megapixel camera. How many pictures can i store on it and also is there any way i can transfer those pictures to my computer without icloud or hooking my iphone up to my itunes account with the usb cord because it starts syncing everything when i connect it to the computer

Answer
You shouldn`t have any problems in holding around 15500 pictures on your 16gb iphone 4S..."

That depends on the size of each one of the pictures you`d like to hold on your iPhone 4S device. Picture size depends on picture quality and picture resolution. I usually take an average size of one megabyte for pictures but do keep in mind that sizes vary so my final answer will not be an exact one. Anyway, you shouldn`t have any problems in holding around 15500 pictures on your 16gb iPhone4S. /Caramel

32gb is hell lot of space. A 32 gb ipad can actually store user data only in 31gb of space because around approx 1 gb is taken up by the operating system. However, with 31gb you can store up to 40 movies of 2 hour length each, or up to 12000 photos or 7000 audio songs or loads of applications.

Same sensor size but different megapixels on a Point 'n' Shoot produces same quality images?

highest megapixel for camera
 on Highest Megapixel Camera Canon
highest megapixel for camera image

IBM ThinkP

I have an old Canon PowerShot A610 5mp camera that seems to take the nicest pictures out of all my Point 'n' Shoot cameras.

If I upgrade to a later model with the same sensor and the only difference being higher megapixels, would I be able to get both larger and better quality images? Or would images from the higher megapixel camera just be equivalent to a stretched out image from the lower megapixel camera that I have now?

Answer
There is a point of diminishing returns when you start cramming more pixels onto the same size sensor. If 5 is good, 8 may be better, but 10 may be too many. Each pixel of the sensor gets so small that it no longer functions as well as the slightly larger pixels on a lower resolution sensor of the same size.

Canon figured this out when it went to 14mp sensors, and has now backed off that number to 10 and 12 again.

What's the highest megapixels a camera can have? (what amount is the highest in the world) ?

Simon Legr

I've seen 10 megapixel cameras but I'm sure there are ones higher than that. Please tell me what is the highest amount that technology has enabled us to create.

Some people have made 1 GIGApixels images (also mentioned above) but this is accomplished by stitching hundreds of smaller pictures together.

http://simplevideoediting.com/learn/part2_connect_camcorder.htm

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You will need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

Why do I look so bad in photos shot with DSLR cameras and ONLY DSLR cameras?

Joey

With regular digital cameras and especially with film cameras, how I turn out is to my liking...

But with DSLR cameras, I always end up looking extremely fleshy and I SWEAR the depth of field isn't as great even though it's higher definition. My brow which is decently pronounced looks almost absent..

Answer
There is no reason.

A shot of you using 35 mm film should not reduce any extremely fleshiness (I guess that is a word) and if the focal lengths field of view is identical and the same lens aperture is used, there should be no difference,

I would say this.

Do a controlled experiment.

Set up some portrait lighting and then using a 35 mm camera with medium telephoto lens (85 mm or better - a zoom lens with that focal length in its range is fine) and a cropped sensor dSLR with a 50 mm or better lens. Have the photographer shoot you using both cameras, at the same lens aperture and there should be NO difference.

My guess is that the photos taken of you using a P&S camera and 35 mm camera, were shot under different lighting conditions and with different focal length lenses.

When making decisions about how different cameras portray you, you have to have photos taken under the same conditions, otherwise all bets are off

Does a Sony NEX-5 camera good for taking professional photographs?

dslr camera handle

dslr camera handle image

Priya Chop

I am looking for a professional DSLR camera that produces high quality raw photographs. I want to click photographs outdoor as well as indoor, portraits, de-focused backgrounds, medium zoom photographs and macros as well. I reviewed few cameras and I found SONY NEX-5 admirable as it fits my budget and due to its compact design, hence useful for easy handling and carrying. Please give your opinions or suggestions.

Answer
I would argue that all the dslrs and cameras like them - such as the NEX - are candidates for professional use. I'm not a pro photographer, so I can't say that the NEX is 100% pro worthy, but based on what is coming out for the NEX system it appears the NEX is on its way to becoming a full-on pro system. If the NEX line of camcorders are any indication, since a fully professional video camera came out this year, we may see the NEX system evolving into a professional system in the next few years.

From what I can see, any camera with interchangeable lenses and a large sensor like the NEX and dslrs can be used for professional photography. Having recently purchased an NEX 5 of my own, I realistically see this camera as robust enough to be a starting point for a professional career in photography exactly the same way as if I bought a Canon t3i (600D) or a Nikon D5100 or an OLympus PEN EP L1 (a camera similar to the NEX but with a smaller sensor) and so on.

So to wrap it up - every interchangeable lens camera such as an NEX or an dSLR can create professional quality photos. Another thing, there are pros out there, probably not a whole lot but they're out there, who use their iPhone as their main camera.

The tool is important but your skill as a photographer is what will allow you create professional photos - and so I recommend going with whatever you feel is the best suited tool for you. If for you it's the NEX, like it seems to me, then I say go for it.

How to make sure all functions work properly after buying a used/refurbished DSLR?

shine

Hi, I will be receiving a used DSLR camera, (Nikon D5100), since I'm a beginner, I dont know anything. How can I know everything works exactly like new and that the images and all the functions are perfectly right?

Answer
Actually I would have recommended that you make sure of that before you buy. That means being able to handle, shoot with and closely examine the shots it takes on a computer before any money changes hands.

But, since you didn't do that, and if it comes with an owner's manual sit down and read it with the camera in your lap. If you don't have a manual you can download one in pdf format from the Nikon site.

As you're reading check each function as it's presented in the book. By the time you're done you'll have the answer to your question.

Best of luck

Going to fireworks tonight, what type of settings should I use on my dslr camera?

dslr camera techniques image

Chelsea Sm

So I recently got a new dslr camera, I'm wondering from experienced DSLR users, what are the best settings for fireworks..like iSO, shutter spead, lens opening, etc. I've never tried to take pictures of fireworks, so I don't want to try to go thru the Hastle of trying to change settings during the fireworks, thanks a ton!

Answer
Put your camera on a tripod.
ISO on 100, medium aperture, manual focus on infinity.

One possible method is this:

Set your shutter speed to "Bulb" and use a remote shutter release.

Take a piece of matte black fabric (like velvet) and hold it in front of the lens to keep out any stray light you don't want there. Quickly lift it away just before the actual explosion of the firework. That way you won't get trails heading upwards, but only the best part of the show. Do this either just for a single bang, or repeat the process to get several of them in the same photo.

This technique can also work for lightning, although you have to be very very quick, since lighting is a lot less predictable than fireworks.

P.S. changing settings is not a "Hastle".... it isn't even a hassle..... it's what it is all about! You should embrace the opportunity to try out new things and improve your skills.

What are some good sites to learn about DSLR cameras ?

Kevin L

Hello I will be in the market to buy a decent quality DSLR camera. I know analog cameras but digital is a whole new and different thing to learn. Prefer to spend less than a grand but if it really makes a huge difference in picture quality then I will possibly spend more. Are any of these cheaper DSLRs worth the money ? Is Nikon or Canon making some of the better DSLR's or is it some new kids on the block. Leica sounds like its over priced for what they are ? Full frame or not ? I would also like to learn how to use a digital camera since its a completely different way of shooting pictures. My understanding is F stop, and shutter speed doesnt effect the picture the same way a analog camera does ? Many questions as you can see lol. So Im in need of some good resources to or even magazines or books that are really good.

Thank you
Kevin

I will be shooting mostly Macro, and static nature scenes. Will i need two lens's to get the right effects or is there one size lens I can pretty much do everything ? Thanks again for your help

Answer
Pop into a local library and have a read at some of the Photography books, you'll get a wide range of information about equipment and techniques.

I tend not to recommend internet websites as they can be a bit 'hit and miss' with information and sometimes difficult to confirm how accurate it actually is, a good 'photo guide' book will have all the latest websites listed.

Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony all make decent cameras, you will prefer one Brand to another, some cameras might feel too big or too small in your hands, some just don't feel right at all.

A wide angle to mid telephoto lens would be my recommendation, other people will advise something different - A 18-105mm lens with macro is a very good starting point.

It's really good advice to get familiar with your local camera retailer, don't be afraid to ask questions, this will give you a chance to 'hold' the equipment to see if its a 'good fit'

P.S. Leica is the Rolls Royce of cameras, all photographers would like to have at least one..!

What kind of Nikon is best for a semi-beginner photographer?

14 megapixel kodak camera reviews
on Kodak EasyShare Mini M200 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x... review at ...
14 megapixel kodak camera reviews image

I am a teenager who just got into photography about two years ago. For Christmas 2011 I got A Kodak Easyshare Camera and it was great for just getting started, but I am ready to upgrade. I have fallen in love with photography (no specific kind, just a little of everything that inspires me) and I have gotten a lot of compliments on my pictures. I really hope to start a little business while I am in High school. I don't know when I'll be able to get a new camera but I still want to do a little research and figure out what I want next. It's proven to be very difficult though, as I am still such an amateur and just end up confused every time I try to look something up. Just trying to figure out about different kinds of lenses has been confusing. All I want is something a few steps above what I have now, and at a decent price. (say $300 tops) Here is what I really want out of my next camera:
- Different color options. (I figure most high quality cameras have that, but I take more black and whites than anything else, so that is essential.)
- A good zoom. (Mine takes an eternity to focus, and even if it finally does the picture is often fuzzy.)
- High-quality definition. (Mine has pretty great definition sometimes, but others it's not much more than any average digital camera.)

I am really considering a Nikon, so here's the bottom line of this question: For all you photographers out there, what would you consider a good Nikon for a beginning photographer to take her pictures to the next level? I am so thankful for the camera I have now, but honestly, I would be a little embarrassed to show up to take someone's portraits or something with it. Thanks so much in advance!!
