Should I get a regular digital camera or a DSL?

adrianforh

What do you recommend? Can I still get a regular size picture that is good quality and not blurred or covered in pixels with a normal digital camera?

Answer
There are three main reasons to get a DSLR -

1. Flexibility, the ability to add many specialized lenses and accessories for things such as panoramic shooting (wide angle), getting close to subjects from a distance (telephoto) and high magnification (macro) . There are also special lenses or accessories for portraits, lighting, etc.

2. Performance, in general DSLR's have higher performance functions such as faster shutter response (the picture is taken the instant you press the shutter), better continuous shooting (2-10 frames in rapid sequence), faster image processing (writing images to memory).

3. Quality, DSLR's usually have more options for recording to high quality formats (including RAW) which provide a better basis for making technically superior images and have higher quality lenses and sensors designed to optimize the recorded images.

In general you do not use the viewing screen to compose pictures but look through an "eye-level" viewfinder. Some new DSLR cameras now have on screen focusing/composition but the price of using it is often a slowed shutter response.

If you are interested in shooting action or sports you probably should look at a DSLR or possibly a "Prosumer" type model with through the lens viewing (the SLR part of DSLR). If fast shutter response isn't an issue and if you don't care about any of the other benefits of a DSLR then go for a point & shoot.

Check out Steve's Digicams to find many models to compare. Good brands are (in alphabetical order) Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Olympus,Panasonic & Pentax. Be sure to check out his section "Steve's Conclusion" for a quick summary of features, benefits and opinions. I have included links to recent consumer models from each of the companies listed above.

Hope this helps, good luck!

is there a progam in the canon rebel xti for panoramic photos?

i need help!!! i have a project due and i dont have any programs for my camera.PLEASE HELP!

Answer
No. No dslr camera has this feature - it's just another cheesy snappers feature.

You'll have to download / buy software to make panoramic photos with your camera. Beyond that you'll have to learn how to shoot for the editor. That means shooting photos that will actually stitch together to look right as a panorama.

There's no doubt several write ups on the subject on the web so Google or Bing for them.

What size memory card is sufficient for a Canon Power Shot S110 camera?

What size memory card is sufficient for a Canon Power Shot S110 camera with 12 megapixels? I'm going on a trip for 2 weeks and I plan to take lots of photos and won't be able to upload them until I get home.

Best answer to whoever can help!

Thanks
The camera is compatible with SD, SDHC, and SDXC, but I'm curious as to how much memory is sufficient, not type.

Answer
That's a very good, advanced compact camera you have there. I own it's predecessor, the S100. If you're not able to transfer your images at the end of each shooting day, I recommend you DON'T buy just one very high capacity card. It's safer to buy two (or more) smaller capacity cards instead. Imagine if you have only the one memory card and on the very last day of your holiday, the card fails...you could easily lose the entire lot.

The chances that your card will fail are very slim, but it can happen. It's never, ever happened to me but it has to others. I recommend you buy a top quality reliable brand (e.g. Sandisk Extreme). You'll want a Class 10 SDHC card for best performance and for recording Full HD video.

According to your User Guide (page 333) you'll be able to shoot plenty of images (approx. 1379 Jpeg images per 8GB) or up to 29 minutes of Full HD video. You can even shoot in RAW, but that brings the total images down to about 446 per 8GB. Some may say to get 2 or 4GB...8GB is often a much better buy. It's your call.

You can buy memory cards anywhere in the world, so you could easily buy another if you had to.

Don't forget...you will NEED to format your brand new card or cards BEFORE using the very first time...via the camera Menu. Read about it in your User Guide (page 267-268). Also make sure you format your current memory card before going away (transfer all files from it before formatting the card).

Remember to give your camera battery a full charge each night or before you start out for the day...because it only lasts about 200 shots (less if using the flash or recording movies).

p.s. something I found...your camera has Wi-Fi capability that allows you to wirelessly send files to your smartphone or tablet (if you have one). You can also send files directly to websites such as Facebook or YouTube. If you're not in range of a Wi-Fi network you can still upload to your tablet or phone using Canon's CameraWindow app. Apparantly (according to DPReview) it works well...

Can I transfer a memory card with 3MP pics to a phone with a 2MP camera?

vehicle_5

I have a 3megapixel phone and I am getting a 2megapixel phone. I need to know if the pictures will still transfer even though the new phone is only 2MP.

Answer
Yes you can. You can even put 12 megapixel photos into a 1MP camera phone. You won't be able to capture anymore 3MP photos though, but you obviously know that.

Answer
Most photographic equipment is personal preference.

If you want a tripod for a small $100 P&S (point & shoot) camera, then Vivitar/ Sunpak/ Weng Dong (or other chinese sounding name) would be okay. For a SLR or DSLR camera, then get a trusted brand...Manfrotto/Bogen,Vanguard, Slik, Gitzo, etc

As far as other ideas...
1) Gift cards to a local camera shop (not bestbuy/walmart)
2) Gift card to B&H Photo... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/giftCard.jsp
3) A camera lens coffee mug... http://www.canonmugs.com/

Im buying a DSLR and not sure what lens to get.?

Daniel

Im getting a Canon 60D that comes with a 75-300mm Lens and am thinking about getting an extra lens(18-55mm) for $100. Should i buy the 18-55 or will the 75-300 be enough?
Should i just get the 18-135 kit if neither of these?

Answer
The 75-300 is the worst lens Canon ever made, the dealer's looking for a mug to take it off his hands.

Get the camera and 18-55mm from another dealer, one you can trust.

EDIT: The 18-135 is definitely a better option.

The Nokia 5800 is a portable entertainment device by Nokia. [3]

The Nokia 5800, code-named "Tube," is a Symbian S60 smartphone. It's an XpressMusic series phone, which emphasizes music and multimedia playback. Although it's not the first Nokia phone with a touchscreen, the first being the Nokia 7710 which ran Nokia Series 90, it's their first touchscreen phone based on the S60 platform. While it has tactile feedback, it doesn't use Nokia's upcoming Haptikos technology[citation needed].

It has a compatibility mode for older S60 and Java applications that aren't touchscreen-aware. It works by using part of the screen for displaying the essential buttons required by the program.

The phone was seen in the 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight, as well as Britney Spears' US #1 hit Womanizer and Christina Aguilera's Keeps Gettin' Better music videos.

Nokia announced the 5800 XpressMusic in London on October 2, 2008. The suggested retail price was â¬279 before taxes and after network subsidies. The phone will be available Q4 2008 in developing markets, specifically Finland, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia, Ukraine and Spain. The phone will miss Christmas sales in more matured markets. Nokia has only commented that it needs time to customize the phone's software for operators in other markets. Analysts speculated the delay as a business manoeuvre not to butcher its existing product portfolio sales for Christmas as the phone is very competitively priced. The phone will hit the rest of Europe and the United States sometime in early 2009. An Asia-Pacific release date has yet to be announced. It will be released in Australia on the 25th of March 2009.

The phone made its worldwide debut in Hong Kong on November 29, 2008 for a retail price of HK$3988 by Nokia Hong Kong.[4] The final pricing of the Nokia 5800 caused outrage amongst Nokia fans on several Internet forums, as it was a 33% increase from the original estimated retail price of â¬279 (due to the fact that Hong Kong does not have VAT as of 2008, and that the mobile phone doesn't come with Nokia's Comes With Music Service since it hasn't been launched in Hong Kong yet).

In Finland, the phone arrived on week 50, 2008.

how much Amp is needed to charge DSLR battery?? i am planning to buy Revolve xeMilo or xeMini series portable solar charger (http://www.revolveusa.com/index.php?p=1_17_xe-series) .

Any device with an input power requirement of 5V DC and 1.2A (1,200mA) or less is compatible with ÏeMini. Any device with an input power requirement of 5V DC and 2A (2,000mA) or less is compatible with ÏeMilo. so can they charge DSLR camera (normally 7.4V battery of most DSLR cameras). if not, can you suggest other portable solar charger mainly for trekking purpose.

Answer
Yes, you can charge a dSLR from a portable solar system. But, no, you cannot do it from a USB system (without being very slow & inefficient about it). Electricity is much like water... going from 5V USB up to 7.4V is like pushing water up hill, and that requires a pump (complexity you don't need). Plus, these little revolve batteries will not be generating anywhere near enough power to support a dSLR battery under normal use.

The solution is to match a 12V solar panel to the demand for power your camera have. For example, most dSLR cameras have a battery capacity (in terms of recharging it) of approx 16 Watt-hours. If you told me that you would drain the camera battery in 2 days under normal use, I would tell you to top it up every day and the power needed would be 8 Watt-hours each day (ie half).
To offset a demand of 8 Watt-hours per day, I would suggest that the smallest of the 12V panels would do the trick. 4 Watts would be enough, but most manufacturers start at a 5W size...
http://www.modernoutpost.com/shop/solar-panels/224-powerfilm-folding-5.html
http://www.modernoutpost.com/shop/solar-panels/237-sunlinq-65.html

To compare, the Revolve xeMilo only produces 1.2 Watts.
If you have any other devices to charge, then 5 Watts will come in handy.

Next, you need to store the solar power in a battery pack that can support a charger for your camera battery. Something small like the Novuscell 24 is a good match for a 5W panel...
http://www.modernoutpost.com/shop/battery-packs/251-novuscell-24.html

Lastly, choose a 12V DC charger for your camera battery. DO NOT attempt to use the charger that came with your camera, as this is an AC model designed for home use... seek a DC model that can be used from your car or from a 12V solar kit. I strongly recommend a universal model like the Ansmann Vario as it can adapt to just about any camera model you will have now or in the future, plus will handle the smaller camera & phone batteries, GPS batteries, AA & AAA batteries, etc...
http://www.modernoutpost.com/shop/battery-chargers/267-digicharger-vario.html

That's about it. A system to properly support your dSLR camera.

Now, having said all that, I have a small universal charger that will in fact charge 7.4V batteries from a 5V USB source. It is slow, but it works...
http://www.modernoutpost.com/shop/battery-chargers/268-3-way-universal-charger.html
Note that small solar charger/battery packs like the Revolve only have the solar power to charge approx 20% of your camera battery on an ongoing daily basis (summertime with good sky exposure all day). The storage capacity of the xeMilo Revolve can support one full charge of your camera, but then it is dead, and will take approx 5 days to fill again (you can use it daily of course, but you can only take out what the sun has put in).

I hope this helps!

How to blur background in portrait shots?

randomthou

I have Panasonic FZ 30. In manual mode I can go up to around f3.5 depending upon shutter speed. But at this aperture, I cannot effectively blur the background while taking portrait shots. i have seen that DSLR cameras taking quite shots from quite close distance but yet getting nice blur effect even though full zoom is not done. I can do full zoom and get better blur effect but then if the subject is not so far I cannot cover much of its body.

What is the trick?

Answer
It is harder to get good bokeh with a point and shoot because the sensor is so small in relation to the aperature. As you have noted longer focal length also increases bokeh so you can use your feet to back up while zoomed out as far as you can to still get what you want in frame. A couple of other things that may help. Get some distance between your subject and the background and remember 1/3 of the area in focus is in front of your focal point and 2/3 is behind the focal point.

As DC said it can be done with photoshop. You make a copy of the base shot as a layer, in that layer cut out what you want to be sharp then apply a gausian blur to the rest. It never to me quite looked as good as bokeh gotten in camera but its usable

I hope this helps but unfortunatly you will not get the control with your point and shoot that you can with a DSLR

Answer
If you can't afford a DSLR, I'd recommend to get a point and shoot that has full manual controls. For example, Canon SX110 IS. It is a 9 megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom and image stabilization. It has Av, Tv and M modes too.

What's the best digital camera to take professional looking pictures, even up-close.?

sunbelly

I have a Kodak z740 and it's great!!! I've found it takes really good pictures if you're perfectly still or get the right amount of lighting, but if the lighting is not just perfect, it will blur a little. I want a camera with alot of megapixels for enlarging and one that doesn't rely so much on the lighting. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Best is a relative term. The best digital camera is the one that best meets your needs that you can afford.

The problems, camera shake and lighting, are problems that effect every photographer whether they using a $10.00 disposible or a $35,000.00 Hasselblad H3D 39. It's not the camera that takes the perfect picture, it's the photographer. If you don't learn how to properly handle the camera you have, you'll only carry the problems you're having with the Z740 to whatever you get next.

The Z740 is a 5mp camera with a 10X optical f/2.8 - 3.7 zoom lens. It's not a bad camera.

Using your flash more or getting a tripod (and I don't mean one of those flimsy things that fold down to eight inches and expand out to six feet but one that is sturdy) will help you in low light or close up situations.

Bracing your camera better will also help. Most people who have point and shoot digital cameras tend to hold them away from their body and frame the picture in the view screen. The further away from your body that you hold the camera, the greater the amount of shake. If you use the viewfinder you can eliminate a lot of camera shake because you're bracing the camera with three points -- your two hands and your forehead.

As far as a camera that "doesn't realy so much on the lighting." There isn't one. Every camera out there, especially digital, relies on light. You can't record an image without light. The key is knowing how to use the light available to you to record an image. If there's not enough existing light, then you need some kind of artifical light, which is your flash. But you need to know your flash's limitations. Basically, at your widest setting you need to be within 2 to 16 feet of your subject. At your longest (telephoto) setting you need to be within 6 to 12 feet. Outside of these ranges your flash won't be fully effective.

Every camera has some limitations. You need to learn how to work with those limitations to get the right exposure. Once you get consistently good results with your Z740, then it's time to move up to a bigger and better model.

ok, so I see many newsapaper ads from Best Buy and Circuit City over digital cameras running around $100.00. I don't get the megapixels thing and zoom. And some have high megapixels but to me the picture quality appears grainy. what i'm looking for is a thin sleek (if possible) camera that has excellent picture quality. Zoom so that I don't have to be so close to take a picture, and long battery life.

Answer
You'd better off with a 5-7 megapixel for a thin/sleek pocket camera. At this point, anything higher than that would be looks grainy/noisy especially in low light condition.

Long battery life means you'll need something with lithium battery.

Zoom... how much zoom do you need? For the usual social thing, 4x optical zoom should be enough.

Anyway. It sounds to me that the Canon Powershot SD1000 will fits you great. It's slim, takes good picture, and it has quite a good battery life. It's more than $100 though, but you get what you're paying for.

What kind of digital camera should I buy?

Q. I need a compact, digital, point and shoot camera with a decent zoom, high megapixels, and priced under 200 dollars. I need it to take good quality pictures, quickly and easily. I used to have an exilim something or other and it was nice, but I want something better.

Answer
Canon 570 IS or 590 IS

IS (image stabilization, helps in bad/low light conditions)
4x optical zoom (ignore digital zoom)
Optical viewfinder (sometimes works better in bright light outdoors)

How do you set up a Canon 5D Mark II to record longer than 10 minutes?

voodoo_pin

I just got a gig where I will have to record uninterrupted for 45-60 minutes at a time, though my camera (Canon 5D Mark II) can only record uninterrupted for about 10-12 minutes. Is there any way I can hook it up to a computer or something so I can accomplish what needs to be done for this job?

Answer
Not going to happen, sorry. Canon (and all other manufacturers) set a limit on DSLR recording times so the camera's sensor doesn't overheat. Actual video cameras use CCD sensors that don't overheat when recording video. For recording videos, you should have bought an actual video camera/camcorder.

What are the best DSLR cameras to purchase for professional use?

keisha H

I am in the market to purchase a new camera and equipment. I have an opportunity to put together photos for a look book and its been a while since I have done some photography. I just want to know what is the best DSLR camera to invest in for what I am looking to do. I am looking at Canon EOS Rebel T3i I am told its one of the best and then I am told by some that it is not good for what I am wanting to do. I was told that it would be best to invest in the Nikon D800 and some people are saying that there are digitals that give the same features for less. I was looking at a nikon D7000 and D4 complete kit. Please give input it would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Professionals need a robust camera when shooting day in and day out.

For this reason, the use cameras like Nikon's D3 series, D3, D800 or D3. If they have a Canon system, they use a 1Ds, Mark III, 1Dx, 5D, Mark III or 7D.

By the time you have the education and experience that would suggest you could go pro, you will have already established the brand of your camera system. This is why it is so important that you do a lot of independent research and not choose your camera based upon opinion

Look for professional reviews of the above camera on DP Review and DXOMark.com

Also visit the websites of those two brands to see the features, number and types of lenses as welll as accessories that are available for each camera model.

Finally visit a proper camera shop a few times as you narrow down your choices. Picking a camera system can take time because once you choose one, you will be married to it for decades, since whitching brands is just too expensive to make a mistake.

The D7100 and D4 would make a good pair at this time if you decide on Nikon. If you choose Canon, the 1Dx and 7D would be the choices for a pro.

The Canon T3i is an entry level dSLR and really cannot survive the riggers that a pro puts their camera through on a continuing basis.

If you are an advanced amateur and have used a Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR in the past, the transition to either companies dSLR will be seamless

Remember, buying a couple of professional grade camera bodies is just the tip of the iceberg

The main thing I was excited about with the release of the ipod was that it would have a camera. I was hoping for something in the neighborhood of 5 megapixels since that is what the new iphone has. however it is not even one megapixel! since the camera is one of the main reasons i would want to think of getting a new ipod (i have a 1st generation touch) I would like to know: what does a picture taken at .7 megapixels look like?

Answer
In a word - trash. Very pixelized.

How does Apple say the camera on the iPad 2 and iPod Touch 4th are HD?

janie l

How can they say that the cameras are HD. They are not good cameras at all. The rear facing camera is only .7 megapixels. And the front facing camera is on .3 megapixels. In what way is that HD?? What are the requirement to be considered HD? And to top it all off Apple hasn't released the MP of either devices camera.

Answer
Exactly, they are not HD. They lied to you. If you want a good phone, check out the upcoming Nokia N9. I got to test it out, it performs way better than the iPhone on every aspect. And the camera is way better too. You should check it out, it will be out later next month, not too long from now.

Kumbi

I want video recording and still photo capability. Can you recommend a good DSLR camera.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Should i get the HTC one or the the Samsung galaxy s 4?

megapixel camera on s4
on Samsung Galaxy S3 mini review & price information
megapixel camera on s4 image

Joe

I'm getting a new smartphone in a month and I am really interested in these two phones. I've watched countless reviews and they each tend to have ups and downs, but neither really stands out. I love the look of the HTC one but I really want a good camera and I'm intimidated by only "4 ultrapixel" opposed to a 13 megapixel camera on the gs4. I'm also a little concerned about them fitting in my pocket, but it's not really one of my biggest worries. Any personal opinions? And don't say iPhone 5 because there is nothing special about the current iPhone, at least nothing that appeals to me.so what do you think? Or should I wait for the next iphone?

Answer
I traded my iPhone 5 for a Galaxy 4S and its been the best cell phone decision I've made. S4 has a big screen, better screen resolution, a battery you can remove (spare batteries on Amazon are about $10), and expandable memory. The iPhone's Bluetooth didn't connect to any of my friend's phones in India for reasons unknown. We couldn't trade photos. They all had Samsung phones. The S4 feels better in my pocket because the corners are not so pointy.

What do u think about future of ARM and Intel?

M

Now, ARM doesn't have so much in big screens. Intel some hours ago talked about Atom Z2420 at CES for mobile phones. The news:
"Bell announced the Atom Z2420 processor for phones, otherwise known as âLexington.â The goal of the Lexington platform is to provide low-cost phones to emerging markets. The CPU can encode and decode 1080p videos, capture photos at 7 frames per second and offer speedy graphics. He then showed a reference Lexington phone and shot the audience at 7fps.

Lexington handsets also support dual-sims, FM radio, microSD Card slots and Intelâs Wireless Display (WiDi) standard for streaming to TVs. Bell then announced that Acer, Lava and Safaricom will be releasing Lexington phones. He then showed the roadmap for Atom phone CPUs, the next of which is Clovertrail+, a dual-core CPU for phones."
How is it good in comparison with high-end ARM (such as snapdragon s4 quad core)? I think the number of photos (7) is by a 5 megapixel camera. Intel introduced 7W ivy bridges (were 17 w before), they provide all day battery life that with the performance they provide, ARM is out of battle. Intel also releases this holiday Intel quad core 22 nm called Bay Trail. Another thing in tablets space against lower ARMs. What ARM is doing right now?

Thanks!

Answer
i think Intel mobile have better future .Intel mobile had warm welcome in market . the Intel powered Lava xolo prices is also less . Hopefully intel Will grow in mobile field .compition is tough though

How much tax and duty should I expect to pay when purchasing a camera from Ebay.?

blomstyle

I am looking to purchase a DSLR Camera from Ebay for around $600 plus shipping. The seller is located in the USA (NY state) and I am located in Canada (Ontario). I know I will be charged the 13% HST in Ontario but I am looking to ballpark the amount of duty I will have to pay. I've heard between 0-18% but I was looking for a more definitive number on a purchase of around $600.

Answer
There is no duty on cameras imported from the US.

No, not at all. The iPod touch has a low-quality VGA camera. The iPhone has an 8 megapixel camera, a much higher resolution.

Vincent

Hi,
I am going batty to know when this DSLR is coming out but I cannot find any info other than rumored specs on the web. It was supposed to hit shelves at the end of March and now....? I might go for a 7d if they don't do something.

Answer
It has exactly 10 more D's than the Canon 60D.

The price drop of the 60D will exponentially be lesser than the introductory price of the 70D compared to the initial offering of the 60D when it came out. (Did that even made sense?)

Many people will drop their 60D's, Rebels, Kisses and entry-level models for an "upgrade".

We will be flooded with questions like would my Canon 1000D lens fit the 70D? Then of course questions like "I bought the 70D body only. Why can't I take pictures?" will follow.

After two weeks of shooting the 70D, many people will get frustrated realizing they are still taking the same quality of pictures with not much improvement whatsoever.

Some would even complain why the rear LCD can't be tilted into 4 axes and rotated 360 degrees.

People who can't wait for the 70D will think of getting a full-frame camera just to annoy Canon. Few will succeed to do so.

Smile!

Which is the best dslr or advanced point and shoot under 1400?

devansh

I want a good starter type dslr or advanced point and shoot under rs.1400

Answer
Lucky for you, there are no P&S cameras that cost that much

With that budget, you can buy a nice new Nikon D7100 or the new Canon 70D. The 70D is not quite available at this time but soon will be.

You may want to spend some time reading the professional reviews of each camera on DP Review and DXOmark when the 70D becomes available and is tested.

Once you have had a chance to research both cameras, visit a proper camera shop and hold each in your hands. That should be the deciding factor to which camera you buy

How much should I spend on a digital camera/what should I look for?

Char2489

Hey! I think I'm finally going to trade the blotchy 35mm in for a digital camera.. I want versatility, photo quality, and nice portable size.. How much should I spend to get something decent (it doesn't need to be professional quality or anything), which brands/models are good, and what features should I be looking for? Thanks!

Answer
In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

You may never need expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, but the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

There is no one place to get great buys, but click the second link in the information above then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but the second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

A friend asked me to clean and charge her new 2000mAh Duracell batteries as described in the next link. Those batteries are still going strong after four months of normal use and have not been recharged.
http://www.google.com/base/a/4210404/D13701973093918363271

Most NiMH rechargeable batteries lose charge and should be recharged when not used after two weeks, but Duracell and RayOVac new formula 2000mAh NiMH batteries hold charge one year when not used. Also, 2000mAh batteries seem to have a longer life. Did not like these batteries at first, but have 12 over five years old and all are still as good as new. Higher mAh batteries (about one year old) still work well in flashlights, but won't start my camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged NiMH 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (both hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. After five years of normal use these batteries are still going four months without recharge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

This link is about prolonging the life of lithium-ion batteries that last two to three years.
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm ...

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder and ... It's PINK, but it uses a $49.50 Series G Rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged, format in camera, and don't delete or fill card completely. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.
http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. Check the camera maker's site or view owner's manuals at this link. You will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links show most of the cameras out there with prices and make digital cameras work better with help on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.

highest megapixel camera ever built image

Mine current one is horrible (cannot get flash and lighting adjusted correctly - ever). Also, zoom feature works but just makes the image very very grainy/blurred.

I want to get a new one. I know next to nothing about the technology behind digital cameras.

I have horrible photography skills so would need something with auto focus (auto everything) and as user friendly and idiot proof as possible.

It may help to know that this will mostly be used for basic every day photography and lots of online sharing. It has to have a good closeup/zoom feature as it will be heavily used to catalog and take pictures of my vintage doll collection. Would I need a special lens for that maybe?

Any suggestions as to specific camera brands and features?

Also any suggestions as to how to take better pictures esp indoors of the dolls to really capture them correctly would be much appreciated!

Would not want to spend more than an absolute MAX of $200.

Thanks!

Answer

I want to get great quality pics from this camera. I want to be able to get different lenses for this camera. What are the good brands vs. not so good brands?? Thanks ya'll!

Answer
I LOVE my Nikon D40x. 10.2 megapixels means big, detailed images with great clarity, and the Nikon optics are first-rate. It's also got a great user interface, though if your photo store offers an introductory seminar (the Nikon rep in my city gives one about every month to new purchasers), it's well worth the time.

The D40x is a particularly good choice if you're a newcomer to photography as a hobby; if you just leave it in "auto" mode and let it do all the thinking about light, speed, etc., it'll take the best-looking snapshots you've ever seen. If you want to start learning a little about photography as a hobby, the D40x will let you change its settings in key areas that make a difference in how your photos will look, especially in "special" situations (low light, high-speed action shots, super-close macro shots, etc.)

For an example of how easy it is to use, take a look at this photo set on my Flickr account:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sfisher71/sets/72157600287588436/

Many of those photos were taken by one or the other of my two kids, one 16 and the other 10 (check the tags for attribution). My 10-year-old had used the camera once prior to our visit to the Japanese garden, and some of his photos from his first day with the D40x are here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lightningcharlie/

Again, those are from a 10-year-old who had picked up the camera for the first time that day. The barrel of flowers, in particular, is stunning, and be sure not to miss the ladybug on the leaf in the closeup of the blackberry blossom.

Since you specifically mention lenses, the D40x has one limitation about the kind of autofocus lenses it accepts. Specifically, while some Nikon cameras include a built-in autofocus drive motor (with a pin that goes into the lens), the D40 and D40x do not. Therefore they can only use their autofocus mode with lenses that have their own built-in drive motors, meaning lenses in the AF-S and AF-I series. You can also of course use other Nikon lenses but you'll need to focus them manually, which is a worthwhile skill to develop for any photographer.

The link in the Sources field is a very detailed review of the D40x, with a list of the controls, the display elements, and much more information, including a comparison with some of its competitors (notably the Canon EOS, another good choice).

As a final observation, the "kit" price for the D40x with an 18-55mm zoom lens is $799, well within your price range. The lens I chose, an 18-135mm zoom, bumps the price just over your limit to $1029, but the flexibility of the additional 80mm was important to me as I do a lot of motorsports photography and am not always in a position to get right up close to the action. If you're really looking to save money, the camera body itself is $729, and you can shop for exactly the lens you want for the price difference. But if you can squeeze another thirty bucks out of your budget and you even occasionally take pictures from a distance, I highly recommend the 18-135 as a good all-around lens for everything from closeup to mild telephoto work.
