Do they give you discounts? More importantly, warranties? And if they give warranties, is it both manufacturer's warranty and store warranty or just a store warranty?
Answer
The camera's there are original and are usually made in japan. Plus the prices are way cheaper than those in malls. Example: the Canon 450D is in retail for 44k but in hidalgo its just 35k. They are a grey market thats why its cheap. The warranties are credible but its only for a short while. I think 6 months. It's store warranty but they will deliver it to canon or you can just go to a canon service center. I think that they also have that free malayan insurance for 1 year.
The shops in Hidalgo are basically distributors that send the stocks to malls soo wala pa ung transportation charges at store additions that increases the prices. Just be wary of scams and avoid alley ways.

Will the destruction in Japan impact photography?

By no means to be insensitive to the devastation and loss of life, but I was wondering if there will be any impact on cameras, lenses, film, paper, etc. (I am thinking cars and other electronics as well) or are they produced in other regions? Surely much was lost in the shipping areas, as I saw the havoc wreaked on shipping containers. It's all so sad.

Ken Rockwell makes mention on his website http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/00-new-today.htm that Nikon's "flagship" DSLR factory, producing the high end cameras (presumably the D3, and possibly the D700) was located in the city of Sendai, which sustained heavy damage. However, my D90, along with many of Nikon's other consumer cameras, was made in Taiwan, which seems unaffected by these recent geophysical events.
In a similar way that droughts in Russia has constrained (grain/what) food prices globally, I would expect many cunning marketers to take advantage of this and jack the prices on these (camera) commodities.
