I need to find a good point and shoot camera?

Anna

I'm looking for a new camera. The one I have now is a Kodak Easyshare C813 (8.2 megapixels)
I want to upgrade to a better point and shoot camera with at least 16 megapixels, but I also heard something about a "sensor" is very important too. I really want nice, clear pictures, but my budget is $150 or under. What camera should I get?
Right now I'm looking at a Canon PowerShot ELPH 130 IS 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 8x Optical Zoom 28mm Wide-Angle Lens.

It says it has a 16MP Sensor. Is that good??

Answer
The Canon is fine. Practically anything by Nikon or Sony or Olympus or Pentax is also good.

What you are not understanding is sensor size. This is the true critical part of a digital camera. Bottom line, the larger the sensor, the better. But that also means a larger and more expensive camera.

Point and shoot cameras, especially in your price range, have tiny sensors, much much smaller than in a DSLR camera. It is NOT, repeat NOT the megapixel number that is important. Truth be told, too many megapixels on a tiny sensor can actually hurt quality, especially at high ISO. Buying a camera, especially a typical, low priced point and shoot, based on a megapixel number is really not wise. 16mp is quite a high number for a point and shoot, and is really not an advantage over even an 8 mp camera. However, your old Kodak is most definitely not one of the better cameras made. There are other things happening "behind the scenes" as concerns how the electronic data is processed that will give you a better photo with the Canon than what the Kodak will do. Kodak simply has never produced the best digital cameras.

But a high megapixel number is not at all what determines image quality. You need to read and study reviews on cameras which interest you. Pay close attention to how they perform at high ISO speeds. In most cases, any point and shoot will have bad "digital noise" at high ISO, and typically, this is worse when the camera has a high amount of megapixels.

A six megapixel DSLR camera will have far better image quality than does a 16 mp point and shoot, due to the much larger sensor in the DSLR. The 16 mp point and shoot image will have larger overall DIMENSIONS, but the actual image quality will be worse.

Which camera should I get and what special effects program?

Lucas Rich

I am wanting to make short films and upload them to YouTube. I currently have a Sony Vixia HD camera but am not sure if the quality is decent enough to get 1080p. I am also looking for a special effects program, from what I've seen HitFilm and Adobe Aftereffects seem to be the most popular. I'm leaning more towards HitFilm right now. So, I want to know your opinion on if my camera can produce good high definition films or if I should invest in something better and which special effects program I should choose. Thanks in advance.

Answer
If you want to get a camcorder go for the ContourHD 1080p Helmet Camera.

But if you want a good digital camera that makes good video i recommend the Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video.
World's thinnest digital camera with a 24mm ultra Wide-Angle lens and 5x Optical Zoom and Optical Image Stabilizer.

Which one should I get, D600/10 or D800/E?

Robert

I'm upgrading from a D5000 to a full-frame and I can afford the D600 but maybe, if convinced enough, might be able to stretch the budget for the D800 which I have seen go for $2,400 - New.

I mostly, if not always, do land/cityscape photography and astrophotography, although I don't mind the occasional wedding, portraitphotography, etc.

I've read many reviews already comparing from the D7000 up to the Full frames D600/10, D700 and D800/E and the battle for me was between the D600 and the D800 and for a few hundred more it seemed like the D800 was well worth it, not to mention the reviews for the D600 weren't all that good, they all had mixed results. Some people said the camera isn't worth it and that people upgrading to full-frames should go for the D800 and some people said the D600, being in the middle of the D800 and the D7100, was well worth the money for the upgrade.

Which one would you people of YahooAnswers recommend? thanks in advance!

Answer
Maybe while you are deciding you can save up and wait for full hands-on reviews of the Df.
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_Df/
It would have less noise than either.
If you want to make the leap to FX you need to make the leap to a big investment in FX lenses. It's not just money, it's weight, bulk, and number of lenses. FX lenses that offer a lot of zoom range tend to sacrifice a lot of edge sharpness on the FX frame.

As a general purpose lens, the Canon EF 24-105mm f4 L has a better reputation than Nikon's 24-85mm or 24-120mm. Sigma has recently announced a new FX 24-105mm which will have a Nikon compatible version.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/10/16/sigma-announces-24-105mm-f4-dg-os-hsm-full-frame-standard-zoom
It remains to be seen how that will look on hands-on reviews.

To really get good use out of the D800's 36 glorious megapixels, you need to skip the high-grade consumer lenses, double the budget, and get a serious professional grade lens like the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED.

How do I know which megapixel camera to get? A 10 or an 8?

Crystal

I've been reading reviews on some cameras and some people say just b/c a camera megapixel setting is higher doesn't mean you'll get a better picture. Is this true? I notice that some 8 megapixel cameras get really good reviews and are cheaper than the 10 megapixel cameras. The 10 megapixel cameras get really good reviews too, but are more expensive. How do I know what camera to buy?

Answer
Pay no attention to the megapixels. Every modern camera has more than enough for anything you would want to do. In fact to many megapixels on a tiny sensor can be worse.

The biggest determiner of image quality would be the optics (lens). On point and shoot cameras I would go for the one with the most zoom. With an SLR you should get the best lens you can afford.

Next would be the analog to digital converter (the inner workings of the camera). This is how the camera takes what it sees and converts it to a digital image.

Next would be the sensor size. Point and shoot cameras have tiny sensors. SLR's have much larger sensors. As much as 15 times larger. This is why a 6mp DSLR will take a far superior photo than a 12mp point and shoot.

Finally would be the amount of mega pixels. While technically speaking the more mp the larger and more detailed you can blow up a picture. The problem comes in the size of the pixels not in how many there are. Tiny pixels generate more heat on the sensor. More heat equals more noise or grainyness to your pictures.

So I would encourage you to look at all the other features of the camera. The one that has the features you want is the camera you should get.

The phone sports an attachable collapsible stylus for operating the touchscreen. The camera has a twisting collar around the lens, which doubles as a shuttle dial to help the user get his or her way through video footage, navigate through the menu, as well as zoom in or out of the phones web browser. The phone's rated battery life is 5.91 hours of talk time and up to 434 hours of stand-by time.[citation needed] The phone music player capabilities along with video playback features. The phone is also capable of DivX playback, which can be displayed on a TV with the optional TV out cable accessory. A document viewer for displaying TXT, PDF, DOC, PPT and XLX files is also included while direct uploading to YouTube is possible with the Google Package.[3]

The phone's main selling point is its 5.1 megapixel digital camera with Schneider Kreuznach optics, a xenon flash, auto focus and an image stabilizer, which can also act as a 120fps digital video camera. It has an ISO800-equivalent High-Sensitivity mode for night scenery shots and "Smart Light" for bright and clear images in the dark. According to the manufacturer, the camera's frame rate is high enough to film a balloon bursting.

we can unlock the phone but so many problems you face.

my suggestion is to go for sony p1i.

The Sony Ericsson P1 is the successor of the P990. It integrates many of the hardware features of the P990 in the form factor of the M600. It was announced on 8th May 2007.[1] There is a Chinese version of P1 called P1c. Compare with P1/ P1i, P1c lacks of 3G, thereby using EDGE which is much slower but more available especially in the US and parts of Europe.

The phone uses the UIQ 3.0 software platform, which is based upon Symbian OS 9.1. It is slightly thicker than the M600 as a result of the new hardware features, but this is reportedly largely indiscernible. It is nonetheless considerably thinner than the P990 (25% smaller - as the official press review states).

It is possible to access a service menu on the P1i by pressing the following key combination, starting at the standby screen: Jog Up, Star, Jog Down, Jog Down, Star, Jog Down, Star. This menu provides information about the phone, including SIM Lock information, as well as provides access to several diagnostic tests of various interface and output components of the phone.

As a result of its increased RAM, the P1's multitasking performance is more stable than that of the first batch of UIQ 3 phones from Sony Ericsson (P990, M600 and W950). The boot speed, when compared to the P990, is also discernibly faster.

The P1 uses the form factor of the M600 and consequently shares its screen size of 2.6 inches, making it 0.2 inches smaller than its predecessor. However, due to the new transflective layer on its LCD display, legibility under direct sunlight has been improved on the P1. This addresses a common problem faced by owners of the P990.

The phone has 256MB of ROM; twice as much as its predecessor. The P1 also has 160MB of built in storage, which can be expanded by up to 8GB using its Memory Stick Micro slot.

Manufacturer Sony Ericsson
Available Q3 2007

Networks UMTS, GSM
Connectivity 802.11b, Bluetooth, IrDA

The Equali

I was impressed by Canon 7D's video capabilities. Very high-quality. So I eventually purchased it today.

However, how is it as a DSLR camera for photography? How would you rate it?

Answer
I would consider its a good camera

Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera
* 18.0-megapixel CMOS Sensor and Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors for high image quality and speed
* Advanced HD movie mode with manual exposure control and selectable frame rates
* Intelligent Viewfinder with 100 percent field of view; 19-point,
* All cross-type AF system equipped with dual diagonal cross-type sensors
* Capture images to CF Card Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CF cards

What is the best dslr camera you can get that isn't very expensive?

Claire

I want a dslr camera that is under about 300 dollars that can take very good quality pictures. I know most dslr cameras are very expensive, but I am looking for the best camera that isn't as expensive. And also, is it a good idea to look for a used dslr camera so it can be cheaper than the original price?

Answer
Make sure you get a canon. if you get nikon you will probably end up shedding out for more lenses. the D300 is NOT the best digital slr so don't listen. It is far from the best. If you are looking for a good price and fairly cheap lenses always go for a used Canon. If you get a model such as 400d or 350d which has been out for time you will get one for very cheap. Check ebay or amazon for used 400d body's.

I used the 400d before my 7d and it served me VERY well. :)

I 'm hoping to hear from people who really know alot about the new point and shoot cameras on the market today.
I am in the market for a new camera to take on my first cruise.
I would like suggestions on up to $500.
Thank you.
(I am not worried about the camera taking videos, as I have a separate camcorder for that because I believe one cannot do justice for both pics and video).
Was going to get the Sony Cybershot model DSCW170, with 5X optical zoom and 10.1 mp, but heard few times that Sony 's need repair too often and that scared me off? I don't want to have a camera that is going to break down on me, so suggest cameras that last, please. Thank you.

Answer
Most cruises will offer a DVD of the cruise and include many of the passengers and their activities. You should have a chance to see the DVD and buy a copy if you like the results. Your picture looks like you are on a cruise! Bon Voyage!

While most cameras take video, and some camcorders take photos; to get the best of both, you need both. Have not seen a camera that compares with the video from a camcorder and camcorders can't take good quality photos. Suggest the least expensive Canon Camcorder and the Canon A590IS camera.
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=174&modelid=16172#ModelFeaturesAct ...

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Megapixel resolution is about potential output size, not image quality.

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

For expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

My camera has 5.2 megapixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

is it possible to get a digital camera that takes batteries and has a charger?

Rach

I can only seem to find ones that have either and not both.
Could anyone recommend any good camera's?

Answer
Most cameras have a charger, but the cost of additional batteries could be high if these batteries are not NiMH rechargeable. The last part of this answer tells about new formula NiMH batteries that will hold charge for one year.

Megapixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

The batteries mentioned below are new formula NiMH batteries that will hold charge for one year when not used. Also, 2000mAh batteries seem to have a longer life. Did not like them at first, but have 12 of these batteries that are over five years old and are still as good as new. Higher mAh batteries still work well in flashlights, but won't start my camera.

A friend asked me to clean and charge her new 2000mAh Duracell batteries as described in the last link. Those batteries are still going strong after four months of casual use and haven't been recharged.

Click this link for complete instructions on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.

NiMH batteries should be recharged when camera reports batteries low. Old batteries can discharge over night, but may provide normal service immediately after being charged. Battery pairs no longer usable in cameras may work well in flashlights. Do not drop batteries on a hard surface or allow voltage below one volt to prevent polarity reversal.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Never touch battery ends or camera electrical contacts. Oil from fingers will contaminate contacts. Use batteries in matched pairs of same brand and rating. Do not mix old and new batteries. New will only do as well as old.

Digital cameras reset to original settings if batteries are removed for one minute. Time varies with function/camera. Check display/setup menu for non-auto functions and date/time. Remove extra memory to eliminate this as a possible problem. Insert fully charged/cleaned batteries and restart camera. The ultimate non-physical repair for software-using devices is reset by removing power ... VCR/DVD players one month.

What camera would you recommend for a college student?

QuixoticCo

I don't need any of those fancy professional models. I want a 7-10 megapixel camera with a good zoom, pretty compact, nice LCD screen, SD memory card compatible. Effects and such would be a bonus, as would included accessories (other than the standard necessities).

I currently own a 6.1 megapixel Kodak EasyShare Z760. Basically, anything lighter and smaller would be an upgrade, and exactly what I want. Any suggestions?

Fuji makes some nice cameras that may fit your wants. Check out the link below. You can actually find this model at stores other than Wal Mart, it's just to show you the specs. They also come in different colors.

What is the best camera brand for an amatuer photographer?

'tis grace

I'm interested in taking artistic photographs and I know that I don't want to use a puny little camera to do it. What is the best brand in your opinion? And maybe an idea on the price range? I'd like for it to be a digital camera.

Answer
I recommend to anyone seriously contemplating the purchase of a new digital SLR camera to consider these two primary questions:
1. How much money do you have to spend???? $500.? $800.? $1,500.?
2. What level of photography do you aspire to "progress to" in the coming years ? (i.e. basic beginner, intermediate, or professional/business use).
For most beginners to intermediates I usually suggest one of these two manufacturers: Canon vs Nikon

1. Canon EOS Rebel model XSi. (Also known as the Canon 450D in Britain) The "kit" package comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens. The camera has pop-up flash, 12.2 Megapixels, and shutter speeds up to 1/4000th, 100-1,600 ISO sensitivity, 7 auto exposure Scene modes, PLUS Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Programmed Exposure Modes and Manual. It also has a 3 inch LCD screen, 3.5 frames continuous per second max., 9 point AF system, Live View Functioning and the ability to record photos in 3, 6 or 12 Megapixels PLUS numerous other great features found only on more expensive cameras. Wal-Mart is also selling them now for about $799. Sam's Club also has them for $729. I also think that Amazon dot com has them for around $650. Hereâs some more info about this FANTASTIC camera: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XSI/XSIA.HTM#

I bought one of these 6 months ago and use it as my "back up" camera. I absolutely love it. I have gotten some fantastic photos with it and cannot praise it enough. I routinely enlarge my photos to make 8x10's and 11x14 size enlargements with no noticeable distortion or loss of detail in the pictures.
Another excellent choice from Canon includes the Rebel XS (also known as the EOS 1000D) which is a 10 megapixel camera which comes with the 18-55mm lens. It sells for around $550-600. US Dollars. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/XS/XSA.HTM

2. Nikon D-90: If you prefer to use Nikon equipment I strongly recommend the Nikon D-90 which has 12.3 Megapixels, 3 inch monitor with Live View, 200-3,200 ISO sensitivity, 11 point AF system with Face Priority, 4.5 frames per second in continuous mode, 5 advanced Scene modes for auto exposure plus Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Programmed Auto plus Manual. The D-90 sells for around $900-950. (Body ONLY. The 18-55mm lens cost an additional $150.-175.) Typically, Nikon equipment is slightly more expensive than Canon equipment, but (having owned both Nikon and Canon cameras), I have seldom noticed BETTER quality results using Nikon equipment. Hereâs some more info about this Nikon: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D90/D90A.HTM
Another great choice is the 10.2 megapixel Nikon D-60 kit ($649) which also comes with the 18-55mm lens. All of these Nikon's can be found at Best Buy or Amazon dot com for a very low price. To learn more about this Nikon check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND60/ND60A.HTM

If you are convinced that Nikon is the way to go, but donât have as much money to spend, there are several other models to consider. You might prefer the 6.1 megapixel Nikon D-40 ($499) kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens. To learn more this Nikon camera check this site out: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND40/ND40A.HTM

These selections are probably the best choices for any beginner to intermediate skill level, offering the most lenses and other accessories, dealers and places to purchase.

I strongly recommend that ALL beginners buy a good book on digital photography AND take a class or two from a Vocational school or Community Education Center in your area.
You can learn more about the technical specifications of each of these two cameras at these websites:

Good Luck

What cameras are best for beginner photographers but cheap?

Savannah

I love taking pictures but the iPhone quality isn't cutting it for me anymore. I wanna be a photographer later on but for now I want to find a camera that's for beginners and cheap. Pictures like on tumblr is what I'm aiming for. That way I can slowly go into editing them but thats later. Great and super affordable! Please and thank you!!
If you included where I could find one and or price I'd appreciate it!

Answer
The cheapest high-quality DSLR camera (the one I'm actually getting as my birthday present) is a Nikon d3200 at $546.95 (here on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6-NIKKOR/dp/B007VGGFZU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375078481&sr=8-1&keywords=nikon+d3200 ). However, my previous camera was a Nikon Coolpix. It has 10 megapixels and it's not too expensive http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Coolpix-L20-Digital-Optical/dp/B001PKEJYM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375078607&sr=8-1&keywords=nikon+coolpix+l20 and here's a newer version that seems better http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-L28-Digital-Camera/dp/B00B7N9CB2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1375078607&sr=8-2&keywords=nikon+coolpix+l20

My friend has a Canon PowerShot ELPH 110HS, which takes wonderful pictures! http://www.google.com/shopping/product/13617906122189357351?q=canon+powershot+elph+110+hs&oq=canon+powershot+el&sa=X&ei=hQn2UdS6E9Te4APn7ICQBQ&ved=0CGoQxBUwAA

I hope these are within your ideal price range, I mean cameras aren't cheap unless you go out and buy an old film camera, and even then the film is expensive (but it's does give you interesting photos!).

Good luck!

I will be viewing it remotely. Aside from the camera kit, do I need a PC on site? Do I need my own a web site?

Answer
David , Every single one of your posts relating to security cameras advertises techcctv which is blatant disregard of posting rules.

All you need is a DVR with internet hooked up.
and allow your router to let the DVR stream the images by forwarding a port (normally port 80)

most DVR will allow you to conect iwth internet explorer and view your images online.

Bellow is a writup just becasue DVR lets you connect does not me it will be usefull some DV iamges are poor wuality and tranmit so slow they are useless ready bellow for more information.

Cameras capture images which are then sent to a DVR (digital video recorder) which then based on your setting decides what images to keep example only keep images when there is movement (motion recording).

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recomend Ascendent as they are cheaper then bosch and pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

Answer
Hello

Are you running power and video or just video.

if you are using an IR camera you are going to want to run a separate cable for power and video.

If it is a normal camera and has small power draw use a cat 5 cable and baluns a cheap and effective way of doing it.

I'm getting a new digital camera. I'm 14, a girl, and the budget is not an issue. What's the best digital camera in your opinion? Is the Sony tx1 or the Samsung 12.2 megapixel camera (the one with the screen on the front) any good? Most descriptive and helpful answer gets the points. Please and thank you. (:

Answer
At least 10 - 30 times a day someone on YA asks: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
A quick search would have given you hundreds of replies, but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

However, if you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixelsâ¦. there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX20 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19208

is a shutter speed of 1/2000 - 1 sec a good speed for taking pics of my toddler?

Jodi

I am looking at a Nikon coolpix 12.1 megapixel camera to take pictures of my ever changing 8 month old. I don't want to miss the cute things he does and the camera I currently have has such a delay that I am constantly missing things.

Answer
The shutter speeds are fine.

The problem is this.

One you cannot choose the shutter speeds, so you have to depend upon the camera to do the "right thing" and two ALL P&S cameras have what is called shutter lag, the time from when you press the shutter release until the shutter actually works. This can be as little as 0.8 seconds to as much as 3 seconds if you are using flash.

Here is a link that will help you some with overcoming shutter lag

What is a lens hood and lens adapter ring used for?

I just bought a Sony Cyber-shot 9.1-Megapixel Digital Camera, it comes with a lens hood and lens adapter ring that you're supposed to hook onto the lens. What is the purpose of these?

Answer
lens hood is to minimize glare from ambient light from what i understand... lens adapter ring? perhaps to attach extra lenses... i have a Canon Powershot S3 IS, and it has the ring thing too. I understand that it's to attach special lenses to give you extra zoom, special features, etc. You'd have to check the manufacturer's website to see about lenses that would work for it though. check out sonystyle.com and look in their cameras section. there may be extra lenses specific to that camera, unless you can take the Minolta A mount lenses like the Sony Alpha series of Digital SLR cameras. either way, check sony's website

:D

Why does my digital camera focus on the background instead of my subject most of the time?

Steve E

We get awesome sharp results of the background, but our subjects will be blurry! It seems no matter what setting we put the camera on it always does this. The camera is a Fuji Finepix with 9 megapixels. We can't get good action shots, either. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
This is a bit of a complicated question to answer but I'll try and give you a basic idea here. I'm also not sure which model camera you have so I can't be certain that all the details will be 100% accurate but you should still get the main concept.

When you take a photo with most cams, there's a two-stage process: half-pressing the shutter button first to lock focus on your subject, and full-pressing to capture the shot. If you don't half-press and allow the camera to determine focus (ie. you just full-press right off the mark), the camera will automatically hunt for the first thing it can focus on, and sometimes it'll get it right, sometimes it will fire prematurely. In this scenario, always half-press, wait for the camera to lock focus and give you a signal that it's ready to fire (usually the focusing rectangle lights up a green color), and then full-press.

The 2nd thing you want to keep in mind is that most compact cameras rely on contrast detection to achieve correct focus. If you're trying to focus on a part of a scene that has very low contrast, the harder it'll be for the camera to determine what exactly you're trying to focus on. This can sometimes be tricky so if the camera refuses to confirm focus (green rectangle), refocus a few times or focus on something more contrasty but that's at a similar distance away from you as the actual target.

There's more to this but try the two suggestions above to get you started. Good luck!

I'm looking for a dslr camera. a good one for a beginner in photography. my budget is $250 or less. I know I probably won't find a dslr with that amount of money but I'm hoping I will (It doesn't matter if it is used.) . I'm looking for suggestions for where to buy one or what camera to buy. I don't want to buy if off of some stupid scam website.

Answer
for $250, you can forget about it

pretty much any DSLR in that price range is really old or broken

I suggest you save up some and look at the Nikon D3100 and Canon Rebel T3

I am looking to buy my DSLR camera. I don't want to get anything too expensive since I am just learning. Any suggestions on the way to go?

Answer
This is a very personal choice and requires some investigation on your part. Many DSLR users will say that the brand they use is the only one anyone should buy but there are many excellent cameras at a WIDE range of prices features. I would suggest you take a little time to determine what you would like to make pictures of and what you want to do with them, then go to a site like Digital SLR Guide ~

http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/index.html

This site is designed to help you select a DSLR camera using free guidelines plus access to product reviews and explanatory articles on terminology and features. It provides tools to identify what your specific requirements are and how to evaluate various camera model's features and limitations. I think they hope you like them so much that you will come back to their web site and purchase some of the tutorial products they sell.

Here is a list of reliable brands (in alphabetical order) sold in the United States: Canon, Fujifilm, Leica (BIG $$$, limited selection), Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sony (Sony has acquired the former Konica-Minolta camera product lines). Canon and Nikon are the most popular brands while Sony and Olympus have been battling for third and fourth place.

Each of these companies has several good products. The choice will often come down to what features you find desirable, how various models feel when you try to use them and how they fit your budget. Go to a store that sells the models you are interested in and try each model out to see how it feels to you or order on-line from someone that has a suitable return/exchange privelage.

HTH. Good luck!

what contributes more for a good picture clarity in a camera ? megapixels or lens ?

My friend tells me that his 5 megapixel mobile phone doesn't capture as clear pictures as a 3 megapixel Sony digital camera with good lenses......If it's true then....Please enlighten me on this........thank you

Answer
The lens, absolutely.

Consider it this way.
A coke can sized $1000 DSLR lens has a hard time to resolve 20MP on a sensor that is as big as a large coin.
Given this, would it be realistic to assume that a tiny, cheap plastic lens could resolve 5MP on a sensor as small as a pinhead? That's just a fourth of the resolution but a sensor that is about 1/50th of the size of a full frame DSLR. This means that that small, cheap lens would have to be made to a much higher degree of precision than the big, expensive, professional lens. That's not likely, is it?

I'm looking for a high-quality, digital camera that doesn't require taking out a loan. On the other hand, I'm not looking for a point and shoot. This isn't for family vacations and scrapbooking. I'm looking to do serious work and possibly open my own studio if things go in the right direction.

Answer
If you want something serious, stay with a digital SLR. I've shot with Sony, Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Minolta, and Olympus. Out of those, I prefer Canon or Nikon. I personally own a Canon 20D.

I'm not sure what taking out a loan means to you; you're probably not going to get anything that I would consider high-quality for under $500. The Rebel series are pretty respectable; and you could get a pretty decent kit for under $1000 with a couple different lens, battery; memory card, bag, etc.

A couple of things to know about Digital SLR's before you buy one.

Depending on how large you're going to be printing... don't get swept away with high mega-pixels. Just about anything you'll find new on the market is going to be enough to print 8x10. I constantly print 11x19 shots with my 8 mega pixels and they always come out great. The image quality has nothing to do with megapixels. Image quality comes from image sensor and lense. Which brings me to my next point.

Lens: Always, always, always buy the same brand lens as your camera. If you by a Nikon body, buy a nikon lens. If it's Canon, buy a canon lens... etc. You can save money with Tokina or Tokar, or whatever they are called, but they won't compare to a name brand lense.

Memory card: You'll really hate yourself if you get anything less than 1 gig. It's typically enough, but I've gone on vacation a couple of times without the ability to dump pictures to a hardrive, and found myself deleting pictures from my 4 gig card to make room for more.

If it were me, I'd buy a Canon 20D or 30D and start off with somewhat wide lens... maybe a 25-100 mm or so. If you can find a 20D it will be cheaper, and there are too many enhancements that you absolutely need from the 30D. You could probably find a package deal on Ebay complete with a lens, bag, battery, memory card etc... everything you need for around $1000.

If that's too much $$... You can get a package deal of a Rebel XTi for around $800; It will be pretty much the same camera as the 20D but it won't have the durable light weight Magnesium alloy body, It won't be as fast, but it will give you a picture just as good.

Still to much Money? Get a Nikon D50. Won't have the megapixel power, but like I said earlier, 6 megapixels will give you a high quality print as large as the average person would print. 8x10 no problem... 11x19 probably wouldn't look too terrible. I don't think it has the magnesium alloy body either, but that's just a durablity issue... framerate isn't as fast... but all these things aside, you'll get a great picture. And a package deal will run you from $200 -$300 or so.

Good luck.

Answer
The T2i is a great camera. The 75-300 is junk. Amazon has slightly lower prices than QVC. Also consider buying the T3 and Nikon D3100.

Is using the Nikon D3100 without its lens okay?

1. I want the Nikon D3100, but I don't have much money. I found this camera at Radio Shack for only $300 IF you purchase it without the lens. I will buy the lens another time. Will I still get amazing quality without the lens?
2. This girl uses the Nikon D3100 with lens Nikkor 50 mm / f1,8 and gets this amazing quality as a result. This is EXACTLY what I am looking for in using this DSLR camera:

Thanks in advance! ^^
No photos?????????????? Really? :( Then, how about high quality videos?
Why are you guys being so mean? I'm only a newbie to all this camera stuff and I was asking an honest question. People are so rude these days. Geez louise.............
Wow! i'm glad I asked before I brought the camera. I don't get it though. At Radio Shack, I practiced using the camera and it took pictures just fine. Am I wording my question wrong? Is asking about using the Nikon D3100 without Nikkor 50 mm / f1,8 lens any better? Doesn't every camera come with lens anyhow?

Answer
A DSLR consists of two parts - a camera and a lens. It cannot take any photos or videos without a lens.

Entry level Nikons, such as the D3100 should come with a kit lens - a 18~55mm. I had no idea that Nikon even sold this camera without the lens, so double-check with Radio Shack to see if it does come with one.

The higher model Nikons typically do not come with a lens as most purchasers of those cameras either have sufficient lenses, or want a different lens. Nikon entry-level cameras generally come with a starter lens because the typical buyer may not be that knowledgeable about which lens they want, or they don't already own any lenses.

If the Radio Shack D3100 indeed comes without a lens, then they are probably selling gray market - that is, cameras purchased directly from Nikon in Japan - not through the Nikon USA distributor. Some large retailers do this as they get a better deal, but the down side is it will not have a USA warranty. When buying cameras directly from Nikon - Japan, they might indeed order a different configuration (one without a lens).

If that is the case, be aware that you may not have a USA warranty, and will have to return the camera to Radio Shack rather than Nikon if you have any warranty issues.

Not saying this is the case, but selling a D3100 without a lens makes me raise the eyebrow of skepticism.

How to buy a used camera?

I'm buying a used DSLR camera off of Craigslist and it's coming with two lenses, filters, an extra battery, an external flash, a USB cable, and few other accessories. This camera would normally be going for over 1,000 dollars with all of the accessories but I'm only buying it for 500. When I meet the seller, what are some things I need to look for to make sure I'm not getting ripped off?

Answer
First Meet in a public place. Take someone with you who can protect you and your money.
A McDonald's, a clean well lit place where you can feel comfortable.

Make sure the Camera battery is charged. Tell them if the battery is not charged and the camera is not able to turn on don't bother to see it. Tell them this when you agree to meet before you go to look at the camera.

Turn on the Camera. Take a few pictures. See if the auto-focus works smoothly and quietly. Turn the focus ring, Make sure it moves without any grinding or stickiness.
Try the other lens the same way.
Look for obvious damage. Dings, dents cracks broken pieces torn coverings ect.

Get the Charger.

Ask for the Box and all its contents and manuals that originally came with the camera. A good way to tell if a camera has been well treated is for the seller to have all of this. 3d hand and stolen gear will never have this.
Some people will offer amazing deals and steal your money. Not saying this is one but it is something to think about.

Sounds like a good deal if all is in good condition.

There are ways to check how many shutter actuations \ the camera has had but I don't know your specifics.

Remember To Be Safe when Buying on Craigslist.

Im looking a DSLR for macro photography. I'm only just a beginner. What brand and unit of DSLR camera can you recommend to me? IMy only budget is 450 USD - 560 USD

Answer
List of the best DSLR camera available now under $550:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_36_5?bbn=3017941&qid=1331655443&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A!493964%2Cn%3A502394%2Cn%3A281052%2Cn%3A3017941&rnid=386442011&low-price=300&high-price=550&x=7&y=9&tag=faumioe-20

Out of these i recommend the Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens. It is one of the best cameras available now and in your Price range. It has great features and impressive results. Some of its features are:

- 14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor; 3-inch monitor with One-Touch Live View shooting and movie capture
- Includes 3x 18-55mm Zoom-NIKKOR VR Image Stabilization lens
- Full 1080p HD Cinematic Video with full-time autofocus and sound
- Easy-To-Use Nikon Guide Mode with intuitive controls and on-board assistance
- Capture images to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards

Pros:
- Better image quality and lower noise at high ISO with the D3100
- MUCH MUCH lighter, which will be nice when traveling
- Larger LCD screen
- 11 focus points, including 3D focus which tracks the motion of the subject or camera.
- 1080p Video
- 14 megapixels
- 2nd Generation DSLR
- Quiet, quiet, quiet

Cons:
- No bracketing option. Not a huge deal since I only bracket once a year
- Cannot use old 50mm 1.8 lens.
- As of 10/1/2010, Camera RAW for the D3100 is not supported in Photoshop or Lightroom. Need to shoot .jpg + RAW or use Nikon Capture NX2 for RAW files.
- Can hear the lens focusing when recording video.
- No depth of field preview.
- Can't use wireless remote
