Sony's new dSLRs the A230, A330 and A380 are aimed right at you, first time dSLR buyers, check 'em out. They are so new that they might not be stocked in all stores that carry Sony dSLRs yet. They are well under a thousand.

But I have to say that any entry level dSLR can get you great results. But don't expect to leave the camera in auto like a compact digital camera. You need some photography skills. Get some basic knowledge on the web, there are tons and tons of free tutorials that will explain f-stops, ISO, aperture, rule of thirds, lenses etc.

You'll need to put some work in to get the most out of your camera. Also you need to invest in some powerful software. You don't have to spend 600 bucks on full blown photoshop. for about 120 you can get photoshop elements. For 100 bucks you can get paint shop pro.

Good luck.

What is the best dslr camera for 1000 dollars or less?

I've been looking into it and so far im leaning towards the Canon rebel 2ti, but they just came out with their eos 60d for 1,100. And as for Nikon cameras i feel that you pay more for less, but that just my opinion.

I have experience with both, i recently have been using an old nikon, which only had around 5 megapixels so i'm looking to upgrade.

I also have some old canon lens from film slr, am i able to use those on a new canon dslr?

Oh, and i'm only talking about body and stock lens, i will add on lens later.

Thanks everybody

Answer
Hey,

Some Nikon models are better, some not. Don't get into stereotypes, they're false and often told by un-experienced people.

You could be able to use those lenses on a Canon DSLR, only if those lenses are EF lenses (says on the front or somewhere).

The 60D is a few hundred dollars more; you get the same image quality because it's almost the same sensor, same ISO performance, same 18 megapixels. Video features are the same. It only has an Articulating Screen and 5.3 vs 3.7fps. Auto focus is the same, 9AF.

I'd get the T2i.

Here's a post called 'Buying a DSLR, what's important, megapixels, features, brand, price, quality and which one to buy - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/03/which-dslr-to-buy.html

Here's a review of the T2i: http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/06/canon-eos-550dt2i-dslr-review.html

Good luck! The site has many more tuorials, tips, reviews and guides!
