How do I know more about phones, quickly?

I barely know what's new, what makes Nexus 4 as good as Galaxy S4 or iPhone etc. It's kinda embarrassing when other people talk about phones and I have to shut up. How do I know more about phones in a few days?

Answer
I'll teach you the basics.

Display-
You might hear the terms 720p or 1080p thrown a lot around. 720p means a display has a 1280x720 resolution, which means it has 1280 horizontal pixels and 720 vertical pixels. The higher thess numbers, the better the display. Usually smartphone reviews classify display resolutions with ppi, which is the amount of pixels per inch. Look for this number when comparing different screen sizes. There's different technologies used liked AMOLED and LCD, but other people usually know naught about this.

Nexus 4 (1280x768)
Galaxy S4 (1920x1080)
iPhone 5 (1136x640)

In terms of raw numbers, Galaxy S4 wins.

Operating system-
The most important part of a smartphone. The iPhone runs iOS, Nokia phones run Windows Phone, Blackberry runs Blackberry 10, the rest pretty much run Android. The most commonly used operating systems are Android (~85%) and iOS (~13%)

iPhone (iOS)
Galaxy S4 (Android)
Nexus 4 (Android)

There is a lot of controversy on which is better, but you can check this comparison right here. http://www.androidauthority.com/android-4-2-jelly-bean-vs-ios-7-224986/

System on a chip-
This is important, but your common layman won't know anything about it. This composes the LTE radios, the CPU, GPU (graphics proccessing unit,) and makes the camera work. Best performing processors out there are the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600/800 and Nvidia Tegra 4.

Camera-
Can't go wrong with a good camera on your phone. Megapixels are always used in marketing as "the more the better" but this is not always the case. If you try to cram a lot of megapixels in a small sensor, photos will look grainy. Lots of sites say the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5 give the best results, while the Nexus 4 is subpar at best.

RAM-
The more RAM, the more programs you can have open at once. Nexus 4 and Galaxy S4 have 2GB of RAM, while the iPhone 5 has 1GB.

Battery-
With battery technology lagging behind, the only way to get more battery life is by cramming a big battery or by optimizing software. The iPhone 5 is a clear example of optimization, with the 1440 mAh battery matching the Galaxy S4 with a 2600 mAh battery.

You might be confused at some of the terms I used here, but it's alright. You can research a bit more about what makes a phone good and bout the terms I just used here.
