How low should my camera hang from the neck strap?

teenEDITOR

This is a terribly newbie question, but I've been wondering. Should the camera be at my chest? near my waist? I have a DSLR

Answer
Everyone has their preferences, but let me tell you mine.

Put your arms straight now on your sides.
Then, cross them so they overlap.

I like to have my DSLR camera body there, because that's the natural place to reach with my hands. One shouldn't have to fumble around when the perfect shot appears.

If the camera is too low (waist or lower) then it bounces against some pretty delicate areas if you are walking or running with it. This can be especially uncomfortable if you have a longer lens attached. I also discovered that a metal beltbuckle can really scratch up a camera.

If the camera is too high (chest level), then you don't have very much neckstrap leeway. When you lift the camera up to your eye, and if you turn it sideways for "portrait" orientation, the short strap becomes an obstacle.

By the way, you may notice professional sportsphotographer or photojournalists wearing two cameras at different strap heights. Why? That way, the camera won't be banging into each other and they avoid damage to their expen$ive lenses.

Can someone measure their Canon dslr camera strap for me, please?

I'm making a cover for the strap, but don't have the camera with me. I have a Canon Rebel t1i, but think all the straps are the same. Can someone give me the exact dimensions - width and length of the wider part of the strap, please? See this link for the design if you like...http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/06/diy-wednesdays-camera-strap-cover.html

Also, if you have the kit lens - 18-55mm, can you give me the diameter of the widest part of the lens, please? I'm also making a little bag for the lens. Unfortunately my camera and sewing machine are in different states right now!

Thank you so much!

Answer
My Canon is a Rebel XTi, 4 years old, but I do still have the strap. It is 20 1/2 inches long as in those directions, but the width is 1 9/16. Just a tad over the 1 1/2 the directions say.

I absolutely hate that strap! I bought another one when I got the camera. It was only about $12 and is a little stretchy and soft on my neck.

Dimensions of Nikon DSLR camera strap?

Emily

Can anyone tell me the size of a Nikon camera strap?

I'm making a camera strap cover for my friend for her birthday, but I have a Canon, and I'm not sure if there's a difference in strap size.

She has a D90 (I don't know if that makes a difference either). I just need the length and width of the thick part. - - I would ask her, but it's a surprise! ;)

Thank you for any help!!!

Answer
I have both Nikon and Canon cameras.

The neck straps are withing a cm of being the same length and making the strap slightly wider at the shoulder, is a good thing.

how strong are Nikon DSLR camera straps?

Bauer Powe

ever have one break? i have my D7100 dangling from my neck on my bike when i am out on a ride looking for shots

my biggest fear is the those little strap eyelets breaking

i have the strap on the right way (the Nikon way lol)

but just wondering if anyone has ever had a strap break (from the camera body that is)

Answer
I would not use one when I go rock climbing as a piece of protection, but I would not be concerned about it coming loose.

Just, double check that the strap is actually double backed through the buckles on both sides.

DSLR Camera Neck Straps?

GRUMP

Just curious, I purchased a new Lowepro neck strap for my Canon 50D to replace the stock strap that came with the camera. I noticed metal loops at the ends to attach to the camera. Won't these eventually scratch or wear the areas on the camera where they attach? Has anyone have experience with these....just purchased the camera and hate to scratch it all up this soon. Oh, and if anyone has suggestions on a neck strap it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
It can be attached to the camera without the metal loops.

Rumor about DSLR cameras?

Dale

I do not know much about cameras, but have received a Canon Xsi. A friend of mine told me not to leave it out without a bag or case for too long because dust, etc can get into the camera and alter its functioning in the long term.

Is this true? Should I be worried if I want to carry it for long hours consistently without it being in a bag (though I do put the lens cover on as much as possible)?

Answer
Although entry-level DSLR cameras like the Canon XSi aren't dust and moisture resistant like the higher-priced models they are still designed to be used in conditions that an amateur photographer would normally encounter. Obviously you wouldn't be carrying it unprotected out in the rain or in extremely dusty conditions (like walking along a heavily traveled gravel or dirt road) but other than those extremes just attach the neck strap and enjoy your camera. Keep your camera safe by always having it hanging around your neck from the strap. In 40 years I've worn out a few neck straps but I've never dropped a camera.

However, I do keep a large plastic storage bag (the self-sealing kind) in my camera bag in case a sudden rain shower catches me out.

When I'm out shooting landscapes I leave my camera attached to my tripod and carry the tripod over my shoulder like a rifle. However, I do loop the neck strap around the tripod legs so if the quick release somehow failed the camera wouldn't hit the ground.

I am a stay at home mom of a 1 year old girl, and I want a professional camera. but has to be around 200 dollars and be able to have a neck strap.

Answer
You won't get a 'professional' camera for $200. I'm guessing you actually mean a DSLR, but that's way outside your budget.

Just get a nice point & shoot.

How can I take pictures on the beach and keep my DSLR from getting sand in it?

Grayish

I have a Canon EOS Rebel XS DSLR camera and will be going on many beaches this summer in the Caribbean. Is there a way that I can take pictures on the beach with my camera without ruining it?
I'd like to spend little to no money if possible.

Answer
Keep it in a camera bag until needed, keep it round your neck using the neck strap, refrain from rolling around on the sand. Don't put it down on the floor, don't take it into the ocean, don't change lenses unless indoors (or in a car).
