I recently lost my camera, it was a simple canon. I am looking to upgrade and start using DSLR's because of the photo quality and the added challenge. What do you recommend for a new DSLR that is within $1000? I am a very quick learner so I do not believe I will need the basic beginner's DSLR to begin with.
I understand what you're saying, what do you suggest for the beginner version then?

Answer
The Canon Rebel T2i/550D looks like the thing for you. It's running right around $900 or so with the body and lens. That's pretty much the top of the consumer line. The lens is okay. You'll want to upgrade when your skills improve.

If you want something a little more advanced, the 50D (body only) is in the middle line-up and runs about $1,000. But then a good lens for that camera will run between $600 and $1,000. I wouldn't buy a more advanced body such as the 50D or 7D if you're not going to buy good glass. So, getting a $1,000 body means signing up for a total bill of at least $1.600.

My recommendation is that you go with the T2i. If you're really interested in a more advanced set-up, go with the body only and get a nice lens like the EF-S 17-55, the EF 24-105, etc.

i have a simple point and shoot camera just now and want to buy a dslr. i want to know what the best dslr for beginners is and it has to be under £300 as this is my budget. thanks :)

Answer
Any dSLR is good for a beginner, whether it is an old used Nikon D100 (2002 -- under £180 on UK eBay) or a top of the line Hasselblad H4D40 (£15,900).

You see, ALL fully adjustable cameras work the same, so it really does NOT matter how much you pay for them. It is up to you to learn how to use three controls to produce the best exposure; shutter speed, lens aperture and ISO setting. ANY fully adjustable camera has those settings.

Finding a dSLR anywhere new for under £300 may be problematic.

Look at the Nikon D3100 or Canon 500D and then once you decide which you want (by visiting a camera shop and testing both of them in your hands), start saving your pennies
