How many megapixels do you consider a good, reliable camera? Personal opinion is all I'm asking for. :))

It depends on the size of the sensor that those megapixels are on.
With the tiny sensor of a typical phone, around 3 is probably a reasonable number. Some phones have the same sensor as a compact camera and then around 6-8mp.
The small sensor of a compact, around 6-8.
The 4/3 sensor of Olympus and Panasonic, 8-12
The medium sensor of a typical DSLR 12-15mp.
A full frame DSLR 20-ish.
With today's technology.
