camcorder or dslr camera?

toyway

Modern DSLR cameras (like Canon 7D, etc), can record Hi-def video, besides making pictures.
What you think, is it better to have a good camcorder and camera, or a good camera with video recording ability?

Answer
HD camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders and cameras produce.

Consumer Level HD camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by Consumer Level HD camcorders and DSLR Cameras. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD camcorder or DSLR Camera, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and or cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

And couple with that, the fact that no DSLR camera, no matter what Model or Make, can not take a Video for 20 minutes non stop, they all overheat, shut down, then need several hours, most times overnight, to cool off.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital Camcorders. MiniDV Camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that HD Camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

Why do filmmakers prefer DSLR Cameras instead of Camcorders?

Mikey

I have noticed this lately and I am just curious to why filmmakers prefer DSLR style cameras instead of Camcorder style Camcorders. It just seems quite odd to me :/
Thanks!

Answer
These things are a matter of opinion, there are pros and cons to different styles of cameras and what you have to do is work out which one is best for the movie shoot you are doing.

DSLR cameras have many pros (as well as many cons), mainly down to image quality. DSLRs were originally meant for photographs, so the sensors in them are massive. This is very important because it gives an incredibly sharp picture. They way they compress the images, and the lack of interloping makes them sharper, less blurry and in general more attractive. They also have interchangeable lens, so you can use appropriate primes for your shoot, rather than being stuck with one zoom lens that you can't take off. They most attractive thing about them is their price. They are incredibly cheap compared to an equivalent camcorder, and with money being a hard thing to come by this is a big pro! On top of this, they are small and light weight which does make them very useful for getting that shot that your camcorder is just too big to fit place. Their weight make them ideal for easy to use stedi-cam rigs, jibs and those sort of moving camera rigs.

It may seem odd, your right. I personally prefer using proper cinema cameras (the Red Epic is my favourite), but they simply do cost far too much for a lot of people. DSLRs are used more because they are cheap and easy to get hold of.

All the best,
Brice
