I am buying a new digital camera, what kind should I buy?

Allison

I mainly take family pics and action shots at kids' games. I like taking outdoor, indoor, and night time shots. I don't want to spend a fortune, but need a good camera.

Also, I know the higher the megapixel the better... but what about the zoom, and other things they list out on a camera? what should I concern myself with?

Answer
You must ask yourself several questions first.

what am i using for?
will i carry it everwhere?
do i want zoom?
what kind batteries?
what kinda memory card?
how many megapixels?

first 3 questions will help with compact and full bodied.
as zoom camera are for the most part larger.
dont go for over 8MP, as picture quality actually decreases.
compacts tend to have smaller ccds. so dont go over 6MP.

Try to find a camera that take AA's, and either CF, or SD memory cards. these and around to stay.

I like the Canon s3 for zoom camera.
and for compact Canon PowerShot A710 IS is good.
sub compact you might have to look around.
or the SD600 is good too.

hope this helps

Good camera for taking professional looking pictures that doesnt cost so much?

Im looking for a good digital camera I suppose...I need a camera that takes good pictures with a pretty high megapixel but doesn't cost too much. I know you can get a camera that costs $3000 but I dont have that kind of money. The camera will be for taking pictures of mostly dirt track racing and foot ball games. Please list specific cameras! I know cannons are good and Kodak.

Answer
The two genres that you list: racing and football are similar in this way: (1) there is fast movement and (2) you, the photographer, can't get as close to it as you would like. This means that the best camera for this would be one with little or no shutter lag, a fast autofocus, a reasonable burst rate, and a fast telephoto lens. The lens could cost as much as the camera body. Your budget, however, will not cover the cost of a suitable mid-tier dSLR and a good telephoto lens. So you may have to settle for a super-zoom compact camera. It will be more difficult to get good images, but you might be surprised at the quality that you do get. There are too many to list here. So go to http://dpreview.com for the reviews and recommendations.

Do not focus on megapixels, as any camera today will give you good images. In fact too many megapixels on a small sensor will be the exact opposite of what you need.

Lastly, the single most important factor for getting professional images is the ability of the photographer. An expensive camera is not a guarantee that you will get professional results if you don't know what you're doing.

You should get a 3DS! Although it's camera isn't as good as the 14 Megapixel camera you mentioned, it does have the ability to let you view photos in 3D while a regular camera cannot!

Also, it has much more functions and Nintendo is announcing a system update around November that allows you to record videos with your 3DS!

Another thing to note is that the camera has a bunch of fun effects! I've had so much fun using the sparkle effect from using it.

The 3DS itself has much more functions than a regular camera as well and it can all be bought for around $170 dollars while high megapixel cameras cost a bit more.

-My sister has a camera and I have a 3DS. I use the 3DS way more than my sister's use of her camera. Just saying :)

Hope this helps!

What is a reasonable and good valued slr professional camera, or what is a website the will guide me with this

soulrebel

i want to get a professional digital slr camera and want to find one with high megapixels and as low as possible price which is an oxymoron but i think i can find one for a decent deal. anyone recommend anything or know a website that can guide me????????

Answer
The key word in your question is "professional". In photography speak that word is usually related to cameras such as the Canon 5D, Canon 30D, Nikon D200, Nikon D2x. The Canon 5D and Nikon D2x will set you back many thousands of dollars just for the camera body. The next level down Canon and Nikon will also set you back some serious money. Those cameras have high grade construction and features and I'm not totally sure that is what you are looking for. Also, pro level lens can easily be $1K or better.

The next level down would probably be the Nikon D80 and maybe the Canon 20D (I'm not schooled on the Canon models). Those camera offer excellent features.

The entry level dslrs would be the new Nikon D40, Nikon D50, Canon Rebel XT/XTi. I hear the D40 is mainly for people who want some of the advantages of an slr but don't want to get all that technical with it. I have a D50 and just crossed over shot number 6,000 at a basketball game last night. It has been a nice camera for me.

Check out dcresource.com. They have good reviews.

so i was wondering what is a good digital camera for a 13-year old that is affordable
any answer will be appreciated
i already have a kodak easyshare c613 6.1 mega pixels

Answer
Okay, first off- don't listen to the idiot who thinks this camera doesn't totally kick ass. They don't know how to take full advantage of this canon masterpiece.

It comes in several colors, it's small, sleek, sexy, lightweight, 10MP! (which is plenty enough. trust me. any higher and you're just throwing your money away), long battery life (I went to italy for a month and snapped over 200 pictures before it showed low battery), takes awesome pictures (so sharp-even with motion, and looks even better on your computer), and it's easy to use. Comon, WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS?! BUY ONE ALREADY!

For people who aren't intersted in switching modes for everything, It's as simple as this... Use the Auto mode (The small button, pushed to the top) when its very dark and you need a flash, like in a bar/club or outside patio Yatzee! tournament(hey whatever floats your boat). Use the Manual mode (The small button, centered) when it's in the afternoon, like at a soccer game or something, and you don't want a flash. That's it. Now if you want to take advantage of all the modes this camera has to offer.... READ THE BLOODY MANUAL.

Don't complain that this canon1200 hasn't impressed you over your outdated canon110 when the truth is- YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO USE ONE!

FINAL THOUGHT: Buy this camera for your daughter, sister, mother, friend, wife- WHOEVER. Just get it while the price is nice and low. As soon as an undisclosed number of these are sold- The price will jump high. Most likely into the 250s or low 300s. Think I'm lying? Look at the prior models. They cost almost a third more than this one. It will surely jump in price, and you don't want to be the one guy that was like, man, i should have listened to that kid and bought one while it was so low. SO BUY IT NOW.

Canon PowerShot SD1200IS
10.0-megapixel resolution captures enough detail for prints up to 13 x 19 inches
3x optical zoom; 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II screen
DIGIC 4 Image Processor with evolved Face Detection Technology; Face Detection Self-timer
Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper settings
Compatible with SD/SDHC, MMC/MMC Plus/HC MMC Plus
