is there a big difference in photo quality between a 4 megapixel camera and a 12?

Q.

Answer
Actually, megapixels don't really matter.

Read the article in the URL below, then think about it..

Why the camera (or megaxpixels) doesn't matter..

How much better quality are the photos from a camera with 7,8, and 12 megapixels?

Like I know the statistics of pixels per line and stuff, but how much can you blow these guys up before you can see the difference? Is there a big visual difference between a 7, 8, or 12 megapixel camera? How much visual difference really is there between there 3?

Answer
Megapixels are no indication of quality, they only indicate the size of the file generated.

You could have a 12mp image that looks horrible when enlarged in comparison to a 6 or 8mp image. There are way too many factors in the creation of the images, and megapixels is a relatively minor one.

Ignoring all other variable being equal, a 12mp image is not significantly larger than a 7mp image. If you;ve got an image editing program, create a blank image at the pixel dimensions of each size and compare, you'll see it's not as large as it sounds.

How much any of them can be blown up will depend on the quality of the image taken, all the characteristics of the lens and camera, the post processing, the type of print being made, and the viewing distance of the print. Any easy answer is just a loose guideline.
