What is the difference between Iphone 3G and Iphone 3GS?

I am thinking about buying an Iphone 3GS. But before that I want to know what the difference is between 3G and 3GS? Some of my friends have said they're the same, but that is not possible because Apple won't release two identical phones. So please tell me the differences.

The 3Gs can achieve 7.2mbps on HSDPA while the 3G can only achieve 3.6mbps.
The 2.0 megapixel camera of the 3G has been replaced with a 3.0 megapixel camera that supports video recording in the 3Gs.

So went to get a new phone yesterday at the store and got a Iphone 3gs because it was only a dollar is there really much difference between the 3gs and the 4 and the 4s. Like since I did not get the newer models did I loose much.

It depends on what you want. The 3GS is different then the 4GS. The 4GS has retina display(Which is where you can't see any pixels) There is a better camera (8 megapixels) A different design. Siri( Which is a computerized voice that answers pretty much anything you ask it) So it depends on really what you want/need
