I want to take infrared photos with my DSLR?

Yuki

Is there a filter I can get to do it?

Answer
You can get IR filters, but. as they block all the visible spectrum of light shutter times will be long and auto focus won't work.

There is an IR blocking filter on the sensor of most all digital cameras which makes matters worse. You can have this filter (expensively) removed and then the camera will be sensitive to IR and shutter times will be normal, but the camera then becomes useless for normal photography.

The easiest way is to shoot a normal colour image and to make it look like an IR image in Photoshop or similar.

People often mistake a digital camera set up for IR thinking it's a heat sensitive cameras like the ones you see on Police helicopter programs, heat sensitive cameras are a totally different and expensive technology compared to digital cameras.

Answer
I don't think I would send up a good DSLR, now that I know about the HeroPro that does video and stills for extreme sports... and costs a fraction of what my Nikon costs.

For what you save on the weight capacity of the plane, you might be able to get this camera and a plane! Plus, you do not risk your DSLR.

Answer
There are two types of infra red camera

Ones that work by recording reflected infra red light - either from normal daylight, or from an infra red light shone onto the subject. All you need is a camera with an Infra Red filter. Regular DSLR camera's can be fitted with these, or converted specially to record such images. Even film cameras using special Infra Red film can record images lit by reflected Infra Red light.

And then there are cameras that record thermal infra red emitted by warm objects in total darkness - like the kind you see fitted to police helicopters. Basically the sensor in the camera is sensitive to thermal energy emitted by the subject. Often these are referred to as thermal imaging cameras.

Answer
Well first of all that was takin from a helicopter, so you would need a little more than a camera. But, given you have a chopper, you could probably take that with any low end DSLR. Im really not sure you are going to be able to do it for under 400. A lens that wide alone would cost you at least 400. You would need a Canon XTi or XSi, or Nikon D40 D60 or D70, and a ultra wide angle zoom that goes from about 10-20mm or something like that. You might be able to do it with a point and shoot, but I dont think it would look quite as good.

Answer
a dSLR is too heavy a load to lift. try using a point at shoot type like an Olympus Stylus that has light lithium battery. get a camera that offers interval shooting for long flights, or use movie mode if it is a short flight.
