highest megapixel video camera image
Stephanie
I am going to start making youtube videos and wanted to know what was the best video camera to invest in. I keep seeing that everyone is suggesting the flip video cameras, is that really a good video camera? I want the camera to be under $500. Im looking for best quality video camera. Thank you!
Answer
I suggest the Kodak PlaySport Zx3.
The Kodak Play Sport Zx3 is easy to use, has a very good display, and takes very good video in normal light and good video in low light. It's waterproof to a depth of 10 feet and can shoot good 5-megapixel stills. However, it only has fair audio quality. Its on-board software makes basic editing and sharing videos online very easy to do.
Highs
A good HD pocket camcorder with very good video picture quality, display quality and ease of use; good low-light picture quality, image stabilizer, versatility and still camera. Moderately priced model.
Lows
Fair audio quality and battery life.

Why is the distance between how much you can zoom with a video camera and a photographic camera so much?
girl
I want to go buy a camera with greater optical zoom than the one I have but I'm curious why do video cameras have such higher zoom capability? I was testing one out that could make things 44x times bigger while the highest I've seen for cameras is around only 6x?
Answer
No, the biggest for digital cameras right now is 24X http://www.dpreview.com/news/0902/09020303nikonp90.asp
The more zoom a lens has, the more it has to compromise at the extreme ends of the zoom range. Because the zoom range is so gigantic, nothing is really optomized for the best performance at any focal length.
The videos you see taken by camcorders are actually pictures taken in really quick succession, around 24 frames per second. Our brains interpret this when we watch a video and automatically fills in the missing gaps, making a continuos, undisturbed video.
With videos, attention is usually directed on motion, and not so much on aesthetics. Because a video is so fast-moving, our eyes usually dont search for those really tiny details as we otherwise would with a still photo. And because we don't search for those tiny details, a resolution of 1900x1080 ( 2.1 megapixels ) is often more than enough. With cameras however, we see resolution upwards of 10 megapixels.
To sum it up, the flaws of a big zoom lens on a video camera is not immediately apparent when you look at it. On a still camera though, a zoom lens with 44x zoom will always mean huge distortion, huge chromatic abberation, vignetting, and maybe a lens so dim that you won't be able to even use it under sunny conditions. And if you look more closely at camcorders, you'll also find that the high-definition models "only" have 10 or 12x zoom, to make the best use of its high resolution and quality of the sensor.
