Is it normal to feel a bit awkward when you first get your DSLR and carrying it around for the first?

time for taking pictures? Also, what can help with that feeling?
You know, carrying it outside around your neck with the strap for the first time.

Answer
I don't use any type of strap around my neck or body, and I sure would not use the strap that comes with cameras with the huge brand name on the strap.

I use a strong Op Tech wrist strap and many times people will never even see you have a camera. Of course, when not shooting, you basically have to function one handed, but I still prefer it to having that camera hanging on me.

Will a camera without live view have to rely on autofocus ?

Elisabeth

i want a nikon d3000 , and it doesn't have live view .
so how do i make it focus on a subject ?

Answer
It's that crazy thing you see photographers doing with their dSLRs. You know they bring their camera right to their face and look through that glass thingamabob. Now you've got several autofocus points. There will be one in smack in the middle and others sprinkled throughout the viewfinder.

so let's say you have chosen the center point to make this easy. You point the camera at a friend or object as you look through the viewfinder. Put the person or object in the center. For a Nikon you will press the shutter button gently, this is called a half press. The camera will focus, push the rest of the way and BANG! you've taken a photo.

On a Sony alpha you can do it this way, or you can choose another option called 'eye start' the camera knows when your eye is looking through the view finder and will auto focus without ever touching the shutter.

To avoid a false signal, to prevent the camera from focusing as it moves around while hanging from the camera strap as you walk around, there is a sensor on my grip (Sony A700) to confirm my hand is there. You can turn off 'eye start' and even the hand grip confirm if you wish.

Your question also shows that you need to brush up on your dSLR knowledge. There are tons of free tutorials on the web. dSLRs are not extra amazing point and shoot cameras. They are not things to buy, slap in auto mode and expect amazing photos to appear.

They are very different tools than compact point and shoots. I see people on forums and here at Yahoo answers that are stunned when they get to playing with a dSLR for the first time and things aren't working out like they planned. Take the time to learn about dSLRs and photography, from the technical, to the artistic and even the theory.

Good luck.
