What quality of the camera means the difference between grainy/blurry or clear? Is it the mega pixels? If it is then how many mega pixels would I want if I wanted a clear picture with little graininess?

Answer
The grain is the ISO (ISO is the camera's sensor's sensitivity to light), to avoid grain you have to shoot in well lit situations. In dark places the camera pushes the ISO up to register more light so it can give you a properly exposed picture.

The only way to avoid it is to use flash or shoot only in very well lit places.

Megapixels have nothing to do with anything you mentioned, they only refer to the size of the images produces. A good example of how they compare to everyday things is that 1080p HD TV is less than 2mp, you could print a billboard with 6 or less megapixels. Don't be reeled in to any camera in particular because it has more megapixels than the other, you'll never need to have so many and it will only fill up your memory card quicker.

What is the point of having digital cameras with so many megapixels but all the photos are compressed?

My camera is an 8 megapixel camera and even at it's highest setting, it compresses at 4:1. There is no option to shoot in RAW either. What good is 8 megapixels if the files are just going to be compressed anyway?

Answer
It is actually best to use a 3 MP setting, but read more on this at the links below. Digital really means software programs do the work and record innformation with bytes and bits like a computer. All cameras shoot in RAW and then convert that to the pictures you see. Some cameras let you see the RAW and use that to make your picture manually.

Check the Memory Card Storage Table at this link:
http://www.digitalphotographywebsite.com/memorycardstoragechart.html ...

The number of pictures that memory will hold depends on the mega pixel setting on your camera. My camera will hold about 900 pictures with a 1 GB memory card and a setting of 3 mega pixels. It will take 84 minutes of video at 30 fps. Could use a 5.2 mega pixel setting, but there would be no improvement in picture quality.

Most companies are touting high mega pixel to sell cameras, but high mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures or enlarging small parts of pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click the following links to see the this in detail.

If there are no memory card slots on your computer, purchase a Targus card reader at Walmart for $8.88 or another brand for less at Ritz/Wolf/Kit camera. Also, they do 3½ x 5" digital prints for 6¢ each on Tuesday and Wednesday.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select then click Stop and OK.

I am thinking of buying this camera which is a 10 megapixel camera, and I have a 1GB memory card that I have never used. But,I am worried it won't hold and take as many pictures on my camera.

Answer
1GB isn't really a very large capacity these days, especially with newer cameras having more MP (which means larger file sizes) and also video recording (which are VERY large file sizes).

How many images you can shoot with a 10MP camera, really depends on which particular make and model you have, because not all 10MP cameras are the same.

For instance a 10MP Canon compact camera will allow approx. 220 high quality images per 1GB.
And a 10MP compact Kodak camera will allow approx. 350 high quality images per 1GB.
Other camera brands would probably fall into this range.
So, you can see that it all depends on the which brand of camera you have.

The 1GB card will be fine for now, but you may also want to consider buying another one if you find it's not adequate for your needs. Cards are dirt cheap, anyway, so you could easily buy another one if you had to. 2GB would be a good minimum.

p.s. don't forget to Format your brand new memory card in the camera MENU before you use it...and everytime you need to delete ALL the files from it in one go. Check your camera's manual on how to do this.

How many pictures will a 1 gig memory card hold for a 7.1 pixel camera?

Gabriella

I recently bought a 7.1 megapixel camera and it came with a 32 mb memory card...holds about...25 pictures i think. How many pictures would a 1 or even 2 gig card hold?

Answer
2 gig = about 1500 pictures..however, if you are also going to take videos, then they will take up more than one pic. spot..but i mean 1500 pics wont go too quickly...
