digital camera megapixel question?

lor

is higher megapixel the better? (image quality)
because i have a 2 mp camera and my brother has a 7 mp camera....when i compared the difference of photos.....i don't see any difference!.....
so that made me wonder???
i heard 4 or 5 megpixels are good enough for everyday pictures.....

Answer
In general higher resolution (more megapixels) means better image quality. There may be situations where that isn't true (i.e. where the higher resolution camera has a low quality lens and the lower resolution camera has a great lens) but generally more megapixels = better image quality.

There may be several reasons why you're not seeing any difference in the images.

1. Many times I've seen people unknowingly using cameras at lower resolutions than the camera is capable of. That lets you put more photos on your memory card, but the quality will be lower. If a 2MP camera and a 7MP camera are both set to 1MP resolution, they're going to look pretty much the same. Check to see if both cameras are shooting at their highest resolution.

2. If you're viewing the images on the camera display or on a PC screen, the resolution of the display or screen is far lower than the maximum resolution of the camera, so you probably won't see any difference. If your PC display is set to 800x600 resolution, that's less than 1/2 megapixel being displayed, so the images will look pretty much the same. Even a 19" monitor set to 1280x1024 is only about 1.25MP, so that's still far less than the maximum resolution of either camera.

3. If you're printing photos at 4x6, you probably won't see much difference. The differences will show up when you get to larger prints like 8x10 or larger. Like with the screen, the smaller size of the print isn't going to show the differences between the cameras. Large prints usually will show the differences.

If you're doing any image editing, having a higher resolution camera can be important. Say you have a photo of Uncle Frank at the beach and you decide you want to crop it down so that the lifeguard stand on the right and that goofy kid who jumped into the picture in the background on the left aren't in the photo and all you have is a nice close-up of Uncle Frank with the sand and water behind him. When you crop the image to only show the parts you want, you're reducing the effective resolution of the photo. If you crop out 1/3 of the image on the right and 1/3 of the image on the left, what remains is only the center 1/3 of the original image. If you shot the original at 7MP, that means that you have about 2.33MP left, because you threw away 2/3 of the image. If you shot the original image at 2MP, that leaves you with only about 0.67MP. You'll probably notice the difference between 2.33MP of image and 0.67MP of image in a 4x6 print.

So if you're going to be doing any image editing and/or printing at larger sizes, having a higher resolution camera may be a good idea. If you're doing just snapshots that you'll be printing at 4x6 or maybe 5x7 or just viewing on a PC screen, then you may not see any benefit to having a 7MP camera over a 2MP camera. And if the 7MP camera is set to shoot at a lower resolution, then there may be no difference at all.

What is the highest megapixel camera available currently?

Q.

Answer
The highest pixel count camera available at present is the Hasselblad H3Dii50 with a 50 mp Kodak sensor

The highest pixel count DSLR at present is the professional D3x with 24.5 mp and Sony A900 semi-pro camera with 24.6 mp and the Canon 1Ds, Mark III at 21.1 mp

The large format Seitz D3 mentioned above is unique in that it is a "scan" back type sensor similar to the method used for many years by digital scan backs used on 4x5 view cameras, but is 1) contained within a special panoramic medium format camera and 2) can take shots at 1/2000th second, much, much faster than the previous backs that took up to 45 seconds to scan one shot.

Answer
You can custom make one as high as you need. The LSST is going to be a huge telescope with a rack of CCDs totalling 3.2 gigapixels.

What all are the highest megapixel camera phones?

Jtech

I am aware of the following phones but was wondering are there anymore with that high or even higher megapixel cameras ? Here is the list that I am currently aware of: Nokia N8(12 megapixels) Sony Ericsson Satio(12 megapixel) Spice S120(12 megapixels) Altek Leo(14 megapixels) Sony Ericsson Cybershot S006(16 megapixel)

Answer
Nokia N8 can take better pics than any of these phones anyday. They've the Carl-Zeiss lens.

Same sensor size but different megapixels on a Point 'n' Shoot produces same quality images?

IBM ThinkP

I have an old Canon PowerShot A610 5mp camera that seems to take the nicest pictures out of all my Point 'n' Shoot cameras.

If I upgrade to a later model with the same sensor and the only difference being higher megapixels, would I be able to get both larger and better quality images? Or would images from the higher megapixel camera just be equivalent to a stretched out image from the lower megapixel camera that I have now?

Answer
There is a point of diminishing returns when you start cramming more pixels onto the same size sensor. If 5 is good, 8 may be better, but 10 may be too many. Each pixel of the sensor gets so small that it no longer functions as well as the slightly larger pixels on a lower resolution sensor of the same size.

Canon figured this out when it went to 14mp sensors, and has now backed off that number to 10 and 12 again.

What's the highest megapixels a camera can have? (what amount is the highest in the world) ?

Simon Legr

I've seen 10 megapixel cameras but I'm sure there are ones higher than that. Please tell me what is the highest amount that technology has enabled us to create.

Answer
In a regular camera format, the Canon 1Ds Mark ll has 16.7 megapixels. It costs $7.000 without lenses.
For studio work, the Hasselblad mentioned above has 39 megapixels on a single sensor. It costs $30.000.
They could go larger... it's really just a matter of time, but for now it's cost prohibitive.
Some people have made 1 GIGApixels images (also mentioned above) but this is accomplished by stitching hundreds of smaller pictures together.

Only High megapixels camera give good quality large banner type printouts?

My DSLR is 13 megapixel, one of my friend is telling only high megapixel camera can give good banner or flex type printouts? is it true? high megapixel give any good quality in the fotos? my 13 megapixel camera can give good high, large and big posters as same as 36 megapixel camera can produce?

Answer
As usual, it appears that too many of you have no idea what you are doing. The answer given by Chris is the only one that has anything to do with reality. Keerok should know better, but apparently doesn't actually print anything. That old "divide pixel resolution by 300" to get print size is bullshit, and has been for years. It was actually bullshit from the start, but somehow has become a "fact" repeated over and over again.

You may print any size you wish from a 13mp image, provided the image is property focused and exposed, and the person doing the printing has any clue what they are doing. There is no size limitation at all... and truly never has been.

Where can I find a good digital camera, for an even better price?

SweetCheek

I love to take pictures. Where can I find a high megapixel, digital camera for an affordable price?

Answer
I work in a photo lab. You don't need a really high megapixel camera to take good pics. an 8 mp camera is all you need. canon is a good brand of camera. The a570, I believe is a really good camera that is very affordable. kodak has a 8.2 m.p. camera for under a $100. fuji has a snappy little 10 m.p. camera that comes with a charger for abou $160. Shutter lag time is a big issue. Especially if you are taking pictures of kids, animals, or any type of action shots. And sometimes the higher m.p. you go the longer the lag time is. However I have noticed the higher megapixel cameras we have gotten in here in the last month or so have been greatly improved upon. Battery life is another issue. If you go with a camera that uses AA batteries, consider getting rechargeable ones and keeping 2 in your camera and 2 on charge ready to go for backup. There are lots of nice camera's out there for around a $100 or so. Good luck to you...
