65 megapixel camera image
Q. Is there a way you can tell the difference?
Answer
This subject can open up the whole "is digital better than film" can of worms. A top level digital SLR of 12 MP or more is generally considered to be the equal of a 35mm film camera. In other words, even with the best, $50 drum scan on a 35mm negative, you will not really gain anything over a GOOD digital SLR.
Now when you get into medium format or large format film, it can be a different story. When these much larger negatives are given a high end scan such as a drum scan, YES, it will be a much better LARGE print than the digital SLR. At small sizes, you would not see any difference.
Then there is the matter of medium format digital backs. These are extremely high megapixel backs that attach to the rear of medium format film cameras. These backs can now be had as high as 65 megapixels, and as you can imagine, the photo quality is beyond belief. BUT, these backs can cost over $30,000. Yes THIRTY THOUSAND dollars... and even higher.
So your question cannot be answered simply. There are many variables that go into it.
