There are many cases you can use for this type of cameras like Case Logic, or Lowepro Ridge

I have a question about my Canon t4i and our photos looking a bit granny?

My husband and I just bought the new Canon t4i 18 megapixels and we love the camera. We enjoy taking pictures with it. I'm noticing that some of our photos come out a little bit on the granny side instead of being super sharp. We have a standard lens on the camera for right now... 18-55. Were going to purchase a few other lens to go with the camera when we get the money. We also are using a Zeikos UV 58mm Japan Optics lens on the camera too.

When we take pictures we try not to ever use the flash. For some reason, a lot of our outdoor photos and indoor photos are turning out granny. We use AV and TV setting a lot when we take our photos. We also set the ISO to different setting depending on what kind of lighting were using. Sometimes we will manual focus our photos and other times we just use auto focus. What is our problem? How can we fix the issue with our photos?

Answer
The answer is ISO. Too high and you'll see noise (red, green, blue specks that aren't supposed to be there). To get past that you either need to add:
More light (flash, turn on lights, etc...)
Better lens with wider aperture,
Slower shutter speed,
or a combination of those.

A 430EX flash is a great flash. Aim the head straight at the ceiling and you suddenly have natural looking light. In fact your camera can control a 430EX off camera from the popup flash.

I am thinking of buying this camera which is a 10 megapixel camera, and I have a 1GB memory card that I have never used. But,I am worried it won't hold and take as many pictures on my camera.

Answer
1GB isn't really a very large capacity these days, especially with newer cameras having more MP (which means larger file sizes) and also video recording (which are VERY large file sizes).

How many images you can shoot with a 10MP camera, really depends on which particular make and model you have, because not all 10MP cameras are the same.

For instance a 10MP Canon compact camera will allow approx. 220 high quality images per 1GB.
And a 10MP compact Kodak camera will allow approx. 350 high quality images per 1GB.
Other camera brands would probably fall into this range.
So, you can see that it all depends on the which brand of camera you have.

The 1GB card will be fine for now, but you may also want to consider buying another one if you find it's not adequate for your needs. Cards are dirt cheap, anyway, so you could easily buy another one if you had to. 2GB would be a good minimum.

p.s. don't forget to Format your brand new memory card in the camera MENU before you use it...and everytime you need to delete ALL the files from it in one go. Check your camera's manual on how to do this.

How many pictures will a 1 gig memory card hold for a 7.1 pixel camera?

Gabriella

I recently bought a 7.1 megapixel camera and it came with a 32 mb memory card...holds about...25 pictures i think. How many pictures would a 1 or even 2 gig card hold?

Answer
2 gig = about 1500 pictures..however, if you are also going to take videos, then they will take up more than one pic. spot..but i mean 1500 pics wont go too quickly...

How much video can a 8GB SD card hold if I use a DSLR?

Princesa

My DSLR camera is a Canon EOS X3 (Kiss Rebel).
Can you please also specify what settings will allow me to record longer videos? How much will it affect the quality of the video?

Thanks in advance!!!

Answer
???

That depends on the size [sd, 720p or 1080p] Interlaced or Progressive, the used video codec and the settings of said codec. I don't think anybody can really tell you precise definitely if you factor in that if it uses Variable Bitrate Encoding, like AVC/MP4 well then it even depends on the scenes because it is variable.

8GB is allot and if it uses a decent codec I feel that should at least give you 30 minutes. Actually you probably earlier have to deal with the limited time the camera allows you to film. See DSLR sensors heat up during use. To stop getting to hot there might be software limitations. Not to mention battery life yeah another issue. How long can the battery handle it.

It isn't odd that many videos are shot in multiple parts. And on your laptop/computer to it together. You edit it.

How many megapixel camera should I get for a Digital Media Course?

Natalia

I'm starting a course in three weeks time that is basically all digital stuff: including photography. I would like to take the photography path as we were told to choose between game development (not very good with writing programs) and photography.
So should I get a 14 megapixel, 16 megapixel or 20 megapixel camera (I had a look an I'm quite keen on the Samsung Smart Camera 16 megapixel camera but I first wanted to ask how many megapixel camera I should get.)

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Zero mega pixels is just about right. YES, I am kidding, but I am just trying to drive home the point that mega pixels do not matter any more! All cameras produced for the last several years have enough mega pixels to produce great quality prints. BUT you must always set you camera for MAXIMUM RESOLUTION. How do you do this? With most cameras you enter the "menu" function and scroll through until you come to the "pixel" setting. ALWAYS set you camera for greatest number of pixels and leave it there! But you want small files for email etc. You should get your yourself a small program for your computer, where you can save your picture for email (using a slightly different name of course).

More important is the length of the zoom lens. You want at a minimum a camera with 5x optical zoom lens. A camera with a 3x zoom lens is useless, and you will wish you had at least a 5x with in a couple of months. You didn't mention a budget for this purchase so it is hard to make a recommendation. Samsung are ok cameras. But Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Pentax are really the names to strive for!

P.S. You said nothing about a DSLR, Digital SIngle Lens Reflex camera like someone else recommended. That is like buying a ladder with 5 of the 6 rungs remove! Too much camera for your level at this point.

I recently lost my camera, it was a simple canon. I am looking to upgrade and start using DSLR's because of the photo quality and the added challenge. What do you recommend for a new DSLR that is within $1000? I am a very quick learner so I do not believe I will need the basic beginner's DSLR to begin with.
I understand what you're saying, what do you suggest for the beginner version then?

Answer
The Canon Rebel T2i/550D looks like the thing for you. It's running right around $900 or so with the body and lens. That's pretty much the top of the consumer line. The lens is okay. You'll want to upgrade when your skills improve.

If you want something a little more advanced, the 50D (body only) is in the middle line-up and runs about $1,000. But then a good lens for that camera will run between $600 and $1,000. I wouldn't buy a more advanced body such as the 50D or 7D if you're not going to buy good glass. So, getting a $1,000 body means signing up for a total bill of at least $1.600.

My recommendation is that you go with the T2i. If you're really interested in a more advanced set-up, go with the body only and get a nice lens like the EF-S 17-55, the EF 24-105, etc.

what is the best dslr camera for a beginner photographer to buy?

Kirsty Str

i have a simple point and shoot camera just now and want to buy a dslr. i want to know what the best dslr for beginners is and it has to be under £300 as this is my budget. thanks :)

Answer
Any dSLR is good for a beginner, whether it is an old used Nikon D100 (2002 -- under £180 on UK eBay) or a top of the line Hasselblad H4D40 (£15,900).

You see, ALL fully adjustable cameras work the same, so it really does NOT matter how much you pay for them. It is up to you to learn how to use three controls to produce the best exposure; shutter speed, lens aperture and ISO setting. ANY fully adjustable camera has those settings.

Finding a dSLR anywhere new for under £300 may be problematic.

Look at the Nikon D3100 or Canon 500D and then once you decide which you want (by visiting a camera shop and testing both of them in your hands), start saving your pennies

I, at the moment own a digital camera, 2.0 megapixel. However, I would like take up photography as a hobby. What SLR camera would best suit a beginner who is wanting to learn the basics of depth and light in a film camera? I travel several times a year and love to hike, so I'd love to take a lot of nature shots. And should I, as a beginner, worry about multiple lenses? Also, I know absolutly nothing about film: is there a certain film I should consider? I'm hoping not to spend more than $300 to $350.

Answer
Honestly, unless you have a specific reason for shooting film you should really think about a digital SLR. Especially as an amateur, the money you save buying a film SLR will be quickly eaten up and surpassed by your film and processing budget. A digital will allow you to make mistakes and learn without spending a penny.

That being said, you wont be able to get a new digital SLR for the money your looking to spend. I bought an Olympus E300, a great beginners digital SLR. On sale I got it for around $450, Amazon has it listed at $529 (see below for review also). As a beginner I would also not recommend multiple lens', unless it comes with your package. Learn to shoot first then as you get into the hobby pick up extra ones if you want to experiment more, keep in mind that lenses can get pricey also. Good luck.

How can I take professional looking photos on a regular digital camera/ nice film camera?

a

So I have 2 cameras. a Fuji, 12 megapixel, digital camera, nothing special really. My dad has a Mamiya 35 mm single lens reflex that still works great, minus the flash, that he lets me use. I have taken picture before (of course) but I want to get better. It would mostly be for outdoor portraits. Any tip/ techniques? I'm pretty sure we have the telephoto lens for the Mamiya.

Answer
Learn about your camera !!!!

Read your manual !!!! Read it several times, and practice in between. If you don't have a book, download a new one from the manufacturer's website.

Attend a class, read some books, read/watch online tutorials.

The major camera manufacturers (like Canon, Nikon, Olympus etc) all have very useful sections on their website for learning about photography.

http://www.nikonusa.com/Learn-And-Explore/Nikon-School/index.page

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/oima_learn_center.asp

http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=HomePageAct

Understanding at least the basic principles of photography (as well as being familiar with your camera) will enable you to make the most of your gear, and will make a HUGE difference to your images.

Q. Anyone any idea what the use would be for such a high resolution? Has it many advantages? I am about to buy a new camera and I want to know it it's worthwhile investing in a digital photo camera of 10 or 12 Megapixel.

Answer
For an average user, 10 or 12 MP doesn't make any difference. If you are printing 4x6 or 5x7, you will not see any difference between 4 MP and 40 MP! Mega pixels do not impact colors, contrast and etc. Mega Pixels come to play only when you want to print larger photos. More mega pixels is also good for cropping in photoshop. You you will get better pictures after cropping. For instance, you can select part of a picture, like a person and blow it out and romve everything else from the picture and get a 4x6 or 5x7 print of that person. If you have more mega pixels, you can even blow out the subject more and get a 8x10 or even larger print without loosing any quality!

(Cropping refers to the removal of the outer parts of an image to improve framing, accentuate subject matter or change aspect ratio)

Answer
For a camera phone, 2 megapixels is on the high end.

But the problem is that there's a lot more than megapixels that go into making a quality image.

Camera phones are not good picture makers. They're okay for a quick snapshot of something, but you'd never want to make a print or frame and display a photo from a camera phone. The problem is many-fold: poor lens quality, poor light sensitivity, non-existent picture modes.

My biased recommendation: Buy a phone to make phone calls, and a camera to take photos.

I'm looking to buy a camera for taking pictures and videos of horses and horse riding in general, but my maximum is £200.
If anyone can give suggestions and than examples of pictures and/or videos of horses that it has taken, that'd be great. Thanks in advance :)
P.s I put this in the horse section because I figured some horsey people will be big on horse photography :)

Answer
About any camera that has a high megapixel rating and has the capability to control the shutter speeds and apertures will suffice. The important thing will always be the skills of the photographer. A camera is only a tool and is only as good as the user.

I recently purchased a GE x200 because it is small and versatile to carry in my saddlebags for fun shooting, but found it quite capable for professional quality shooting of horse events in remote areas

In addition, I have found folks are usually calmer when looking down the lens of a not so "pro looking" camera. This is one attribute many pros take advantage of while shooting candids. There are many compact digitals today with very high resolutions.

Here is a photo I took with the GE X200 at a recent ACTHA event . This was taken deep within the woods where traditional pro equiptment would have been too bulky to pack in.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/50856837@N04/8981636288/

Feel free to look at my photo collection on flickr, and I think you will see I get the job done in capturing images. Not meaning to toot any horn, but merely stating that the most important photographic piece of equiptment lies behind the viewfinder. That equiptment is the knowledge of composition and knowledge in the mechanics of photography. The GE X200 retails for $180.

What type of camera should I use to shoot pictures for an online magazine?

Victoria

I'm wanting to start an online magazine but I'm not necessarily sure how many pixels I should look for when choosing a camera. I don't want one of the bigger, bulkier cameras that you have to buy lens for (simply because I'm not that advanced in photography) but I want something that can produce great quality photos. Any advice on where to start? I'm looking to get a camera next week to start learning to use and shoot with so any advice will help! Thanks!

Answer
Megapixels are over-rated these days. Most new cameras have more than enough pixel depth (ie. resolution) for most people's needs. There are other things, as well, that you should think about.

Read the following articles for some good advice on purchasing a new camera:

I want a dslr camera that is under about 300 dollars that can take very good quality pictures. I know most dslr cameras are very expensive, but I am looking for the best camera that isn't as expensive. And also, is it a good idea to look for a used dslr camera so it can be cheaper than the original price?

Answer
Make sure you get a canon. if you get nikon you will probably end up shedding out for more lenses. the D300 is NOT the best digital slr so don't listen. It is far from the best. If you are looking for a good price and fairly cheap lenses always go for a used Canon. If you get a model such as 400d or 350d which has been out for time you will get one for very cheap. Check ebay or amazon for used 400d body's.

I used the 400d before my 7d and it served me VERY well. :)

What is a good dslr camera for a future photojournalism student?

Q. im looking for a dslr camera to use in my last year of high school and college however i dont know what to look for or where to look.

Answer
Do you already know photography with a film SLR? If not, you need something 100% manual. A Pentax K-1000 type camera, to learn with. If you are serious about PJ stuff, then you need to know how to set up a camera by instinct, not plodding through menus. A few years with manual film gear will either teach you that skill, or change your career path.

Any of the current medium range DSLR bodies would serve you well if you already know all that aperture and ISO trivia stuff. Nikon D300s, Canon 7D, Sony A850, Pentax k7, Olympus E30/E3.

Rico

Lets say you have two photos, they are the same photos. one is a 13.1 MP and the other is shot with a 24.6 MP camera. Will the high MP camera offer the best quality? If not, what offers the high quality that makes photos look like glass, HD, the best of the best?

Answer
Yes and no. In today's cameras, the answer is largely no. But the answer is not simple. There are many factors that affect quality. Some have already been mentioned. Not mentioned is that sensor technology has improved in ways that are unrelated to pixel count. An 8-megapixel sensor today (if you can find one) will be much better than the same size from five years ago. As a general rule, the more pixels you have, the less light there is to share between them. This harms low light performance. However, the technology has improved so that today's sensors use the light more efficiently. Another factor is the quality of the in-camera processing before you even see the image. The more expensive cameras have more powerful processors and better software.

So it would be a mistake to purchase a camera solely on a comparison of the megapixels.

I can't leave the topic without mentioning that by far the greatest factor in quality photography is the skill of the person holding the camera. Most people who buy cameras today do not have the skills to take full advantage of the camera's capabilities. Another way of looking at this is that it won't be your camera that will limit the quality of your work. It will be you.

Would i still look as good as i do in a diff camera?10 POINTS?

I have a 5 MP camera. And look alright, but I'm guessing that I would look worse in a better higher MP camera, I look best in the mirror, better than I did on cam. Also is it bad if I only look good in a well lit area, or just descent?

Answer
Flip UltraHD Video Camera - 2 Hours (3rd Generation) NEWEST MODEL is a powerful, easy-to-use, fairly cheap video camera; it records @ 1280 x 720, 60 FPS, and can hold about two full hours of video at that capacity. It fits neatly in a shirt pocket and is pretty much ideal for recording anything that doesn't need to be professionally produced film, from home movies to recording interviews. It comes packaged with a basic editing program that's designed to make it as easy as possible to produce basic home movies and post them to the web.

Answer
I phones get old quickly. They aren't really cameras, they are phones with a crappy lens and a small sensor. Not the same animal at all.

As you want a small camera, I would suggest a bridge camera - one with a fixed lens that still has manual controls. A review of various bridge cameras appears here:

http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/advice/501485/best-bridge-camera-of-2013.html

You may find that limiting quickly, in which case a full DSLR could do the job. With a DSLR you can change lenses on the body.

The thing that matters most is that camera has manual or semi manual controls: the aperture, shutter speed and ISO are controlled by YOU, not by the camera. Then YOU have to learn to use the camera properly. The camera takes pictures, YOU make them by understanding how to balance your exposure to the lighting situation you are in. Sometimes you have to compromise, and knowing what to keep in and what to give up is a huge part of photography. The camera cannot do that. It just records what you point it at, and at whatever settings you program in, or, gods forbid, what it thinks best on Auto. It is not the camera, it is the photographer!

Two of the samples you posted had some issues relating to exposure, although the Golden Gate Bridge was pretty close. The feet shot was interesting, but the reflection on the floor was so blown out that it completely ruined the shot. The christmas stocking shot was both under and overexposed simultaneously and the coffee shot has composition problems - what is the thing on the lower edge? Exposure was dead on though.

All need a clean up in photoshop (or similar) to get rid of the grey mud over the image. The white and black points need to be set, which will eliminate the grey cast over the images. This is a separate issue from the camera - digital images generally need some post processing work to correctly set the density/contrast.

Whatever camera you end up choosing, learn to use it on fully manual.

Edit: You could definitely use a circular polarizer. Other than that, no filters are needed unless you're old school and want a UV for your lens as a protector. I use one, LOTS of people don't as it can degrade image quality. I feel it's a fair trade.

What is the best DSLR camera for a just starting out photographer?

Sportygirl

So I'm looking into getting a DSLR camera, I have done quite a bit of photography but just with the normal digital cameras. I'm supposed to be taking some SR pictures and some sports type pictures. I've always wanted to get a DSLR camera but just haven't had the money. What are the best kinds for people looking to take more pro pictures, but I don't wanna pay a ton of money! Thanks :)

Answer
The Pentax listed below with a 50-200mm lens covers most anything you could desire in terms of pictures. I bought a Pentax K-x (now discontinued) without the 50-200mm lens and ended up paying more when I added the 50-200mm lens. The K-R is the current model., What influenced me to purchase this camera over Canon (I use to be a life long Canon user.) was the clean viewfinder with only one moveable focusing point, which I love. However more focusing points are available. Also I liked the idea that the stabilization is contained in the camera body. This makes older Pentax lenses, even many used for film cameras available to be used on this camera. Also makes Pentax lenses cheaper than those that contain stabilization in the lenses like Canon & Nikon.

Good Luck!

Pentax K-R 12.4 MP Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and 50-200mm f/4-5.6 Lenses (Black)
by Pentax For about $700.00 at amazon.com

Is it possible and/or feasible to achieve focus stacking using a digital camera instead of a DSLR?

I have a digital camera (the Olympus Stylus Tough 3000) that I've been recently using more often. I don't have any immediate plans to buy a new camera. It's far from the highest quality camera, but it does have good macro focus, up to 2 cm.
I'm beginning to get into macro photography and realize that I could achieve a greater depth of field and sharper images using a technique called focus stacking. However, all of the tutorials I've found online mention the use of a DSLR camera for this method. There's no mentioning of this method with a regular digital camera.
As I understand it, you need to take a series of shots at varying distances in order to get a greater range of that sharpness you want to achieve. I'm very new at macro photography, so please bear with me.
Is it possible to do proper focus stacking with a normal digital camera and NOT a DSLR?

Answer
Yes it is, focus stacking software will work with image files from any camera, it's just that a DSLR can have a dedicated macro lens fitted, be easier to control and, because of the larger sensor, image quality will be better.

When taking the images a focus slide is useful, these will move the camera a small amount between shots, but keep it aligned. Something like this;-

They can be used with any camera that has a tripod thread and go between the the tripod and the camera.

These type of cameras also offer a wide array of features, including bigger, brighter views, faster operation, and perhaps most importantly, support for various lenses.

I have a nikon digital camera, and it came with the USB cable that connects it to upload pics. I have heard that you can download software that when you attach your camera to the computer, it can make it turn into a webcam. Is this true? I'd really like to know asap. I have a friend who lives in another state that's been wanting me to get one, but I'd rather not go out and buy one, if possible.

Does a phone with a 3.2 megapixel camera take good pictures?

Justin

I am going to upgrade my phone with a better camera. I was wondering that is a 3.2 megapixel camera better than a 5 megapixel camera? I am also wondering, there isn't a difference between 3 megapixels and a 3.2 megapixel camera, right? Thanks!

Answer
It is a phone. It has a microscopic lens and a tiny sensor.
Photos will be OK, occasionally good.

If photos are important to you get a camera not a phone "upgrade".

How many pictures will a 2GB memory card hold on a 3.2 megapixel camera on a phone?

Erin

Hello. I am about to get a new phone, and I don't want to lose all of my pictures. I have the env Touch, which is a 3.2 megapixel camera. I need to be able to hold a lot of pictures, I only have about 200 or so now, but on my new phone I'll be taking tons of pictures. Please help! Thanks.

Answer
It depends on the size of image the phone creates. It will be a lot, but it's impossible to tell without more specs.

You won't have to worry about losing anything if you back them up once in a while. The phone should be USB capable...plug it into your computer and copy the images to your hard disk, and then maybe back them up from there to a CD. Backing things up is simple. There's no excuse for losing anything.

I was just curious what is the next model after the Samsung A990 for verizon wireless.

Answer
The a990 is the top of its series for Samsung phones, but the newest-latest-greatest is the Samsung u620. It does everything the 990 does (except the camera is 2.0 megapixels, not 3.2) but it is capable of Mobile TV, the live TV service.

What is the best cell phone currently available in the USA?

SuperPlex

I am interested in learning your opinion about the best mobile phone available in the USA. Please tell me the name and manufacturer and the following: a) if you personally own it; b) if you have used it; c) which carrier it is available from; d) the reasons why you like it. Do you like the voice quality, the signal strength, the size and form factor, the battery life, the weight, the design, the special features, the multimedia options?
Note: this question is *not* about carriers. Just phones. I am aware that Verizon & Sprint's networks rely on CDMA technology that does not interoperate with the GSM networks managed by Cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile.

Answer
For music players, the chocolate is hands-down the best. Yes, i have owned it and only for Verizon.

Best camera/camcorder, Samsung A990 which I have tested for Verizon. It is the best camera phone upon the market for resolution with 3.2 megapixel and hook up to the tv & record up to an hour of time as well as playback. Very nice!

Best PDA, Samsung I830 for Verizon which is a music compliant for mp3 & GLOBAL phone for CDMA & GSM... Oh so cool to have as well anywhere in the world.
