My son (Sophomore currently) signed up to take Photo One at his school. I am used to digital cameras and have just learned that the Photo 1 class uses film camera. I am looking for a film camera under $400, easy for a high schooler to use, and preferably Canon ( I'm a little biased). Also any tips for using film cameras would be appreciated too. Thank you, have a nice day.

Answer
It's great that your son is going to learn basic 35mm photography. I'm sure it will be very enlightening for him!

A couple points though:

1--Your bias to Canon is not very useful because Canon has never made a 100% mechanical student camera in the EF mount. They only made them in FD and FD is not compatible with your digital Canon so there's no valid reason to lock your son into your favourite camera brand. You could buy him a 35mm Rebel if you want to be able to swap lenses but these cameras are more complicated than necessary for basic photography and, in my opinion, result in confusion and dependence on auto features instead of concentration on the true basics.

2--Do not listen to these people who suggest you can buy a 35mm SLR for under $100 on Craigslist or wherever non-camera retailer. This is a gift for your son and he needs it to earn a good grade and to educate himself about photography. Therefore you should buy from a camera store. You can buy a new Nikon FM10 or Vivitar 3800n from BHPhoto.com or Adorama.com for less than $400. You can buy a used, higher quality 100% mechanical SLR like a Nikon FM, FM2n, F2, F3, Canon FTb, Canon F-1, or Pentax K1000 and lens for less than $400.

3--Whatever camera you buy him, instead of focusing on brand, focus on what lens/es you buy! This is FAR more important. Whatever camera body you buy, buy a 50mm lens. It can be an f2, f1.2 or anything in between, but 50mm lenses are crucial to the 35mm film photographer. Do not waste your money buying a bunch of zoom lenses. They are not useful for learning basic photography on because DoF is more difficult to understand with them. A typical 35mm SLR kit consists of a 28mm, 50mm and 85, 100 or 135mm. If you buy a cheaper camera like the Canon FTb, you could spend your extra money on a couple good lenses in these lengths. A new Nikon FM10 or higher quality FM2n, F2 or F3 with a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 will cost most of your budget. It's up to you as to if you think he'll benefit more by a simple higher quality camera or a cheaper one with more lenses. Don't forget there will be film, processing and printing costs on the way too! You may want to set aside $150 or so for a couple months worth of film. Find out what brand/type the teacher wants them to use and buy it cheap at BHPhoto.com or Adorama.com.

4--It may sound like I'm suggesting a lot of Nikons and this may not appeal to you as a Canon shooter but most film shooters will tell you that Nikon is more popular among us because 1.) They still actually make film cameras and Canon stopped years ago and b.) They made many more 100% manual film cameras which are preferred by most film shooters and Canon stopped making those years ago too. Canon's a great company but I feel that buying Canon 35mm cameras now can put a photographer in a bit of a limbo situation. Either the lenses cannot be used on new DSLR's or you can't get the exciting, disciplined full manual film experience. You can do both of these with Nikon and Pentax.

Good luck with your shopping! I encourage you to look for a local used camera shop too and see if your son has any preference. Whatever camera he is most inspired by will be the one he'll use and enjoy the most!

MANUAL AND METAL! FILM FOREVER!

What is a good camera for sports photography (under $400)?

For under $400 what is a good action camera for taking pictures at my sons baseball and football games?

Answer
You have a problem ... P&S cameras under $400 or even more suffer from shutter lag ... in sports and action photography, that means missed shots

You will have to increase you budget to $550. That will get you a DSLR with 18-55 mm lens (over 80% of your shots of the family, friends and travels) and a 55-200 mm which you will use for all your sports and action photography.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SDPMEI/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=photo

The $150 will be well worth it, since the cameras sensor is over 15x the size of most P&S cameras and eventually you will be able to add more lenses to your system.

The Canon SX-10 has about the least shutter lag of the P&S cameras, 0.079. The flash shutter lag takes a little longer, at 0.78 seconds. At just under 0.08 seconds, it is close the the longest shutter lag found on DSLR's At $399 US with a 20x zoom, it could be a good choice, but in the end, what you buy has much more to do with your goals as a photographer.

Should I get the iPhone 5, Htc One, or Droid DNA?

megapixel camera vs ultrapixel camera
on HTC One Mini vs Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
megapixel camera vs ultrapixel camera image

My birthday is coming up and I am really torn between two phonesâthe HTC One & iPhone 5. The only reasons I want an iPhone 5 is for full emoji support, all commercial & popular apps such as vine, & iMessage. That's it. I really don't want to have a phone that everyone else has. I want to be unique, & I LOVE Android, just not its lack of emoji & popular apps that my generation uses. I like every other aspect of the HTC One more than the iPhone. I really don't want to follow the croud, but at the same time I want all of the features all of my friends have. I'm torn.
I'm also taking into consideration the DNA because I like its black design and texture and accents, & that it runs on Verizon's network.
P.S. I'm not bound to any company. I am contract free.

Answer
Go for Htc One as Comparing the top flagships phones available,
HTC One is undoubtedly the best phone money can buy right now. iPhone is smaller, 4" screen size is not enough now a days. iPhone looses in terms of processing speed, though it is not slow, it is not as snappy as its competitors. (Samsung , HTC). If you don't want to buy android, iPhone is the alternative, though android is far better than IOS.

iPhone is known for its built quality, if you considering it for that, give a look at HTC One ..its built quality is equillant or even exceeds iPhone 5.

Compared to Droid DNA, HTC One can be considered as a successor to Droid DNA, as it is more advanced and innovative. Though if you are looking for large screen then choose Droid DNA as it has 0.3" larger screen than HTC one.

Coming to Samsung s4, Compared to HTC One it looses in below categories.

>Build quality is all metal (S4 is plastic)
>Interface overlay (HTC sense is far better than Touchwiz and is currently the best android overlay )
>Useful features (Checkout the videos on youtube, what zoe, blinkfeed can do, pure innovation)
compared to samsung useless features such as smart scroll, smart pause, health checkup, which is only one time show up to your friends nothing else.
>Better camera interface
>Highest Pixel density screen on any other phone available right now (468 ppi)
>Better low light and sharp imaging with ultrapixel camera coming second only to nokia pureview.
>Best audio on stereo speakers on any phone you have ever experienced with BEATS audio amplifiers built in, its combating docking speakers.

Samsung s4 wins in below catergories
>Bigger battery (300mah more than HtC one though creating only around 15-20 mins on average real world difference)
>Bigger Processor 1.8 Octa core (1.7 quad core in HTC One)
>Micro sd slot (32 gb built in is more than enough in HTC One )
>Battery removal (not much needed if u were already used to iphones )
>Slightly bigger screen at 5" (makes it less pocketable though)

The cameras are different, 13 mp vs 4 "ultrapixel". The theory of the ultrapixel on the one is that fewer, but larger pixels will make the camera more functional in low light instead of cramming in megapixels and using a brutal tiny LED flash. The HTC one also offers new innovative camera software features, like Zoe, which makes it a complete package.

Bottom line. Between these two it is quality vs quantity.
The s4 does have a 1.8 ghz octocore processor, double that of the one. However with this processor only 4 cores are in operation at any given time. So you wouldn't notice a difference in performance.
The one is of sturdy 100% aluminum unibody design. It makes for a gorgeous device that feels snug in your hand.
I would rather have a solid, dependable phone than a piece of plastic bloated with resource hogging useless software features.

Samsung s4 can't actually surpass the goods in HTC One and that innovations are unique to HTC.
I am unconvinced by Samsung's marketers.

So overall HTC One is the best smartphone.

Which is better.Samsung galaxy s4 or Sony Xperia Z or Htc 1?
